Black Cow Bistro - Porterhouse steak with Cafe Paris Butter and Peppercorn sauce

Another 5 Star restaurant in Launceston and possibly the our best one yet. We made a reservation in…read moreadvance and still could only get a 5:30PM seat...something we rarely do. And glad that we did. We had never been there before and thought it was larger. It is quite small but very cozy. We ordered an order of house made sourdough bread served with a portion of cultured butter $3, a 400 gram porterhouse steak cooked medium rare that was served with a potato galette topped with a Dijon mustard cream sauce and chives $60, a side of steamed asparagus with lemon, elderberry, and golden sesame $13, and the Mr. Brown and Towns mixed mushrooms, parsley and garlic oil $13.50. The bread arrived and it was a beauty of A Piece. Tasty and the butter very good. We decided to leave it for the meal. Then the Porterhouse(we call it a NY Strip) arrived and it was beautiful. The taste was great. The marbling cooked right out to deliver a beautiful piece of meat. We ordered the Peppercorn sauce and an extra Café de Paris Sauce $2. Both sauces were great, although the steak was so great that it really didn't need them. The potato galette was awesome as it was topped with a Dijon cream sauce and chopped chives. I have now come home(US) and tried to make it. I will eventually get there!!! Now for the sides, the Mr. Brown and Towns mushrooms were some of the best I have ever had. Interesting that we had seen them at the Harvest Market that morning and admired them. Sad we were in a hotel and nowhere to cook them. When we saw them on the menu we hesitated for a moment as we are not garlic fans...don't let that stop you. If available, order them. Then there were the asparagus. We normally don't order as much food but couldn't help. Glad we did. They were over the top good. No room for dessert! Highly recommend. Make a reservation well in advance. Can't wait until our next trip to Launceston. Black Cow...Thanks for a great meal.

Knowledgeable and friendly waitress, really made the experience outstanding. She expertly adapted the fixed menu meal for my wife's food allergies. She provided great descriptions of the food and wine parings that piqued our appetite. The food was unique and delicious. The wine parings were wonderful.

Right away we were served with warm fluffy rye bread with horseradish butter. We got the angel hair pasta with uni (couldn't find much of an uni flavor because it was masked by the sourness of the lemon but the angel hair pasta was nice and al dente, a tad too oily but I couldn't stop eating it and the hubby loved the contrast that the brioche crumbs brought), the saffron tortellini (exceptional and refreshing goat curd and lemon filling, perfectly al dente also..didn't care for the green sauce and maybe a tad too oily with butter. I am sad however that it only comes with 4 pieces) , the pan roasted white fish (crispy skin could be crispier, the nut mixture and saffron mussels are phenomenal and the squid ink polenta is good does have a lot of squid ink flavor and was unfortunately kinda sitting in a puddle of butter like the other dishes) and fried spatzle with lemon herb (not too heavy with the lemon herb). For dessert we got the poached pear, roasted fig and blue cheese ice cream (oddly good ice cream - tastes like cheese! And I love the pear flavor!) Service wise, our server knew his stuff. Overall a great dinner and so glad we came here! If I had to recommend one restaurant in Launceston, this is it!

First impression of the menu was just so so as there weren't varieties. The service though did bowl me over as they are attentive and extremely polite. The restaurant serves breakfast by offering a Continental buffet spread and then an add on from an ala-carte menu. Day one of my stay, we had the Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon and the Banana Pancakes. When both dishes came, I was delighted by the food arrangements and the serving were big. The Banana Pancakes were fragrant and sweet (I had mine with caramel) and the pancakes were moist and soft to the taste. I have had some pancakes that had too much baking soda to make it fluffy it tasted chalky but these were fluffy enough and yet tastes good. The Eggs Benedict were good serving size and the bacon that came with it crispy on the edges. From the Continental spread, we had coffee and tea which are free flow and the tea had quite a fair bit of selections to choose from. There are also breads as well as fruits to complement your breakfast. As my stay was only for 3 days, I did not run out of selection for my breakfast options thankfully. If they could expand on their menu selections I would have given them full five stars. Still, I would recommend them for breakfast, lunch or dinner anytime as I believe their existing food and services would still make up for the lack of varieties.
