And glad that we did. We had never been there before and thought it was larger. It is quite small but very cozy. We ordered an order of house made sourdough bread served with a portion of cultured butter $3, a 400 gram porterhouse steak cooked medium rare that was served with a potato galette topped with a Dijon mustard cream sauce and chives $60, a side of steamed asparagus with lemon, elderberry, and golden sesame $13, and the Mr. Brown and Towns mixed mushrooms, parsley and garlic oil $13.50. The bread arrived and it was a beauty of A Piece. Tasty and the butter very good. We decided to leave it for the meal. Then the Porterhouse(we call it a NY Strip) arrived and it was beautiful. The taste was great. The marbling cooked right out to deliver a beautiful piece of meat. We ordered the Peppercorn sauce and an extra Café de Paris Sauce $2. Both sauces were great, although the steak was so great that it really didn't need them. The potato galette was awesome as it was topped with a Dijon cream sauce and chopped chives. I have now come home(US) and tried to make it. I will eventually get there!!! Now for the sides, the Mr. Brown and Towns mushrooms were some of the best I have ever had. Interesting that we had seen them at the Harvest Market that morning and admired them. Sad we were in a hotel and nowhere to cook them. When we saw them on the menu we hesitated for a moment as we are not garlic fans...don't let that stop you. If available, order them. Then there were the asparagus. We normally don't order as much food but couldn't help. Glad we did. They were over the top good. No room for dessert! Highly recommend. Make a reservation well in advance. Unexpectedly, they had a salad bar (all you can eat) which was a great way to start the meal. With several lettuce salads to choose from, olives, fresh tomatoes, apples, beets, etc, I found so many ingredients to make my salad just what I liked. For dinner, I chose the small rump which was like a 6-7oz ribeye. It was cooked perfectly to my specification. It came with roasted potatoes. The steak and potatoes were delicious. With the salad, it was a pert combo. Parking is on the street. We got a spot right in front of the place. Parking is free after 5:30pm so that was convenient. Apparently, the restaurant was never a jail, despite the bars on the windows, but the vibe was still fun and created a nice atmosphere. Service was excellent. Great stop.

You can not get a steak this good from anywhere else on the north-west coast, a few years ago I did…read morenot like steak, no matter the cut, and now I attended this restaurant at least once a month; I would suggest the rump or porterhouse or for something a little more expensive, the eye fillet. Every meal comes with a buffet, including cold and warm salads, cheesy cauliflower bake (AMAZING), honey carrots and baked pumpkin, I could just eat the buffet to be honest! On Wednesday nights the Mallee has $15 Parmi's, personally I do not like them, however I am picky with meat and everyone else I know loves them! And on Friday they have a $12.50 burger and fries night, I do not like this, it's way too fatty, although it may be because of how cheap the burgers are, because at full price the burgers were amazing! Although I don't like everything on the menu, I will always eat here. Always cooked amazingly.

The burger was actually really fresh tasting- if you want a greasy, American style burger this is not the place for you. This burger meat pattie tender and juicy and "spicy chipotle" did not disappoint- it was extremely hot! Finally, the tortellini was full of flavour and the portion a decent size (particularly if you are having entrees). Desserts were not too rich and obviously the ice cream was scrumptious. The only critique I have is that I assume they were understaffed tonight (either in the kitchen or waitstaff) as service was very slow, and I heard a lot of people complaining and waiters apologising. I'm sure this is not their usual routine and we may have caught them on a bad night. We waited quite a while for mains and then dessert and did not bother waiting for the bill (went up to the counter to retrieve it ourselves). We noticed many around us also waited quite a while for their meals. The food was so good though that this really didn't impact my opinion of the restaurant too much and I would definitely return!
