A couple of months ago, I reviewed (http://www.yelp.com/biz/morris-cultural-arts-center-houston)…read morethe new Morris Cultural Arts Center at my alma mater, Houston Baptist University (www.hbu.edu), with its new University Theater and Belin Chapel/Recital Hall. I gave the place five stars. Tonight, I was part of a concert at the Belin Chapel (http://www.hbu.edu/hbu/MCAC_Belin_Chapel_and_Recital_Hall.asp?SnID=980407042) with the Houston Chamber Choir, and decided this space merited a review of its own. I commented previously that the place had a coporate look to it, but a corporate look that was done extremely well. This was based upon a very brief visit to the place - my main business for that evening being in the University Theater. I am happy to say that the Belin Chapel is indeed beautiful. The place is in the shape of a circle with decorative metal lighting at top and visually appealing acoustical shells suspended from the ceiling as well as behind the "stage" area. Dolph, who sings in the choir with me, commented that the ceiling lights, acoustical shells, and everything else in the place work well together and create a distinctive and unified look. He also commented that the big cross at the front of the space was such that it blended seamlessly with the rest of the room to such a degree one does not notice it at first. The seats are comfortable, and the many seats on the floor are surrounded by a circle of seats elevated such (but not so much that stairs are necessary - the main groups of seats are sunken into the floor) that they are more like box seats in a theater. Whoever heard of box seats in a chapel?? Belin Chapel has been designed with both public speaking and performance in mind. Does the room's acoustics lend well to both? To public speaking, yes for the most part. For musical performance, I'm not so sure. The acoustic is certainly not bad, but as a singer, I found the place to be, acoustically, a little stuffy. Our singers had a hard time hearing each other, and I had one person comment to me she could not hear people on the stage when they were just speaking (this concert ended the second day of a choir festival rife with concerts and workshops). I felt the place had a little too much sound absorption. Not so much that the place was a failure that way, which it clearly was and is not, but still too much. It seemed as though what reverb and echo we did get was contrived, if that is a good way to describe it, though from what little I gathered from the audience, we sounded well in there. There are six acoustical curtains which, when closed, reveal more hard space for sound to bounce off of. However, these curtains cover so little real estate that Dolph and I are not sure if opening them would have done much good. I want to give the place 3.5 stars instead of four. But I wish I could give it five.
