Me and the boyf have been determined to buy all our fruit and veg from here because it's yummy and local and they're the only one I know of that accept Bristol pounds. We are starting to juice too and this would be costing a lot more if we were buying from a supermarket. There's something really satisfying and almost smug about buying really fresh, a little bit more grubby and wonky, and a whole lot more delicious produce from the greengrocers! They also do little extra treats like jam and chutney!

I'm on a mission at the moment to use supermarkets as little as possible. Here you'll find wonky carrots, dirty potatoes and odd shaped oranges; just how the come out of the ground (or tree) and how they should be. Gardeners Patch sell pretty much any standard fruit and veg you would want. You wont find too much international out of the ordinary, but you will find inspiration if you're trying to think of a meal to cook. The staff are really nice and very helpful. I asked lots of potato related questions: best for mashing, roasting etc and they were happy to help. I've by a weeks worth (2 bigs bags) of fruit and veg for less than £10 each time I go. They accept Bristol Pounds and 'Text to Pay'

If you're a fan of local produce, then this is certainly the place to come. Every Sunday this…read morelovely little market will set itself up along the banks of the River Taff and sell its wonderful wares to the unsuspecting (and suspecting) public. In fact, this is such a permanent and well loved fixture of the Cardiff local flavour, that even when the market is not in session, you'll find a series of fruit and vegetable sculptures in the same spot. These cross sections of cucumbers and apples can be looked through to see the grand Millennium Stadium beyond. If you're a fan of keeping your carbon footprint as small as possible, then this is the place for you. All of the products on sale here are very high quality and extremely local. This is a fantastic way to while away a Sunday afternoon. The only problem is that I'd like it to be larger with a better selection!

It was perfect for a lazy, sunny, Sunday. I have to admit I didn't end up buying much apart from bread and cakes, but they did have a huge selection of cheeses and deli style foods across the 30 odd stalls. It also has craft stores and flowers and really, really good coffee. This is probably not the place for people on a budget to do the weekly shop but a great place to pick up some really special ingredients and a fantastic way to spend an afternoon away from the city centre. Open Sunday 10am- 4pm

Since becoming a vegetarian, people always ask me if I miss eating meat and the answer is always…read moreno. That said, I really do miss cooking meat and have been known to make, quite literally, the most gorgeous crackling in a 10 mile radius. With summer upon us it's time to get the roman pizza oven/bbq in the back garden going and my mum has stumbled upon something great down at Vic Hopkins. They do really great BBQ meat, pre marinated and packaged up ready to just chuck over the coals. Our carnivorous guests always absolutely love them and the smell of lamb and mint wafting from the garden is almost enough to lure me back to the dark side. If that doesn't indicate just how good the produce is here, nothing will...

For me, stumbling upon a butcher shop is a stark reminder that yes, this Yank's not in Kansas…read moreanymore. Up until a few years ago, I only satisfied my carnivorous cravings by purchasing the shrink-wrapped offering from the local grocery store. Shameful, I know. I've bought two steaks from Vic's before, but ended up freezing them because I was too lazy to cook (story of my life!). I'll be sure to post an update once I actually eat them. Judging by the look of them though, these babies are sure to be the cornerstone of a tantalising dinner. If you're not a sirloin fan, Vic Hopkins & Sons offer a range of delights, from sausage and lamb to homemade faggots and pork pies. If you eat meat, then there's probably something delectable here for you. Vic Hopkins & Son also offer a delivery service throughout the greater Barry area.
