Waste of time. Called on Saturday and was told someone would come Sunday between 7-9 am Sunday morning for a free estimate. Shortly thereafter heard that would change to Monday from 7-8 am. Fine. Waited around- no call and no show. Called at 8:30 to see why I hadn't gotten the call 30 minutes before and the person said he'd ask his manager. Got a call saying someone would cone between 11:30-12:30. At 12:10, the technician called to say there's a $30 charge for an estimate. No thanks. Oh well he said if I don't want to pay for an estimate he could come the next time I was available on Wednesday. If you want your time wasted, this is who you should definitely call. I called at 915am on a Friday morning and was told a technician would be sent between 12-130pm to look at the job I needed done. At 140pm no technician, no call. I called Jacob's back and was routed to a garage repair who said they saw I called and the "ticket" was empty. They would reach the technician and have them come out the same day. It is Saturday, almost noon, no technician and still no phone call. While other iron works companies in New York told us the job can take like 3 weeks to be completed, Jacob's Iron Works did it in 3 days only. We couldn't afford a security guard every night at our store entrance and Jacob's Iron Works saved us a lot of time. They have a way to get things done faster than other companies. And we were lucky to hire them since they also fixed our cellar door that wee couldn't get to open and close as easy as we used to. What I really loved about Jacob's Iron Works is that their repairer told me clearly: We either do it the right way, or you can call someone else. I asked why and he told me that he can see that the chain system was repaired many times, and that he can't sign on the warranty for something he doesn't replace. I knew what he was talking about, since I had few repairers working on that gate in the last few months. I appreciated the honest and we signed the contract. Did a good job, and priced fairly when others priced crazy amounts. Jacob asked for $35 just to meet with me, so I called others, but now I know that it is better to pay the right contractor, and to get the job done right. Repaired our fence and iron door/gate, after a track backed into it. They did the repair in a way that it is hard to tell where the damage was. Someone accidentally hit our fence with he's car. I searched online for a welder in Brooklyn, and I found Jacobs iron work. They send Adam to check the fence,and he told me that I have 2 options, the first is to repair the existing fence, and the second is to replace the damaged part. I had a bad experience. Nice guys but not reliable. They didn't show up for 2 estimates, but were reasonably responsive via text. They were just clearly very busy. I have 2 houses with steps that I needed railings for and a commercial building that needed basement doors. Nice guys just not available to give estimates timely, even though I would have paid for the estimate. read more

Mixed experience. I'm inspired to write this after reading today's NY Times article about shady lead-generation Google results. In hindsight, my experience checked a lot of the boxes in the article. I can't be certain, but the piece rang true. The iron gate to my patio was falling out of the wall and misaligned, and was almost impossible to open and close. After a Google search, I called Jacob. The person answered like it was a home phone, which was a bit of a flag, but, whatever. He had a guy out to me quickly, so that was good. But as I watched him work, it seemed clear I wasn't getting top notch craftsmanship. He fished some scraps of metal out of his completely chaotic van, started drilling unmeasured holes into them using my patio furniture as support, which I had to ask him not to do, and then did a quick & dirty welding job to reattach the gate hinges to the wall. The whole thing seemed like he was making it up as he went along. In the end, the gate is fixed in a basic way, it opens and closes more easily, but it looks sloppy and doesn't feel very durable. Ninety minutes, $435, with the check not made out to Jacob, so the workman was obviously a subcontractor. Overall, the job got done, but be aware. read more
