I am on the hunt for a specific color and I was not fully familiar with fabric stores in the area as I am still trying to get my footing. So, I was recommended this place by a quilter. And I wish I had come here first, because their fabric selection is VAST! So many beautiful fabrics! If you are looking for knit-wear, or any fabric related to clothing/being worn, just stay up toward the front. I needed a stretched satin, but the color I needed was not in stock. They offered to order it for me, but the time frame I had was limited so I had to pass. The ladies working here are INCREDIBLY SWEET! There is also a section in the back if you need any sewing equipment repaired - they will take it and go over it with you. This is a huge fabric store that carries a great selection of quilting fabrics, patterns and notions in addition to products for other types of sewing. I needed some bias tape, and as I try to adjust to a post-Joann world, I figured it was time to give Jackman's a try! I was impressed in many ways - they had unique buttons, a healthy selection of bias tape, and plenty of trims! They had so much beautiful quilting cotton, including the splashy brands like Tula Pink, and what felt like a whole wall of batiks. Their apparel fabric left something to be desired: not a lot of choices, but the quality seemed decent! Better than Hobby Lobby. The staff seemed friendly, I didn't need any help so I can't speak for that, but I saw somebody being helped with bridal fabric and the associate was so enthusiastic! We went by today looking for fabrics that are not digitally printed (a request by our quilting teacher as they tend to cause issues if they snag on a long arm machine, causing an obvious disruption of the design). I'm admittedly new to quilting, and I asked an employee as a new quilter how I could tell if the fabric we were looking at was digitally printed or not. The first employee I asked didn't even answer the question, and responded in a heavily sarcastic tone "what difference does it even make". Then she went and got someone else before I could even respond to her rudeness. Second person also questioned why I cared, said it should be noted somewhere on the bolt, looked at the fabric we'd picked, and announced that they didn't sell any digitally printed fabric anywhere in the store so we didn't have to worry about it. So I purchased what I had. After I got home, I was looking online for a backing fabric that matched our theme and accidentally came across several of the fabrics I'd just purchased. All of them were digitally printed. So I looked up everything we bought, and the vast majority were digitally printed fabrics prints. First off why be rude when I ask a question? If you didn't know, why not just say so? From second lady's behavior during the interaction, I highly suspect she did know... so why lie to my face? I feel cheated. Such a total disappointment. It will be hard to ever go back there. I'll never be able to see Jackman's as a trustworthy business again. read more

They have them all out for display and the staff is always friendly and willing to show you the different features to help you figure out the one to buy. My friends and I stopped by this store on our personal shop-hop. The building gives 1970's vibe, but inside they have a great assortment of fabrics! Mainly quilting cotton, but also a larger section of garment fabrics. Clearance table in the back for $7. per yard got my attention! Large area for new sewing machines and a couple long arms. Browsed the notions area... although not much of a large selection, the displays seemed like they came from So-Fro Fabrics from the 80's! But hey, they still work! Great selection of quilting fabrics, notions, and sewing machines. There's also a range of bridal and "fancy" fabrics. The one thing they don't have a lot of is upholstery or home decor fabric. As I was checking out, I asked if their other location (in Fairview Heights, IL) had more upholstery fabric and the worker said YES! She even gave me a coupon for 15% off my purchase from the Fairview Heights location. Since Joann's Fabrics is gone, I think this is one of the few alternatives for fabric, and it's a pretty good one. read more

Jackman's is a fabric wonderland and a great local alternative to Joann's. They stock really high quality fabrics. My friend and I were gushing over the quality. The prices are also extremely reasonable for the quality. In some cases, higher quality for lower prices than your big box fabric stores. There are also many luxury options. The trims and ribbons are extensive as well. When checking out, the clerk helping me was super efficient and friendly. I spent pretty hefty penny, but it was worth it. Big uh-oh, I discovered Jackman's, and thank goodness it isn't closer. I found them on a Row by Row Missouri search and that's why I went to St. Louis to get their kit. But they are so much more than a quilt shop, they have a quilt shop inside an apparel fabric shop. I mean, good quilt fabric not generic. Jackman's is a destination store. Like Hancock's of Paducah. Everything is displayed so attractively, and the quilts are so beautiful. And just about every quilt fabric you need is there. Banging myself in the head that I forgot to buy a t-shirt.Expect to spend some time looking cause there's a lot of quilts to see. And expect to spend some cash there too. This is a terrific sewing supply store, and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable! Their selection of products and different brands is easily the best in the area. I called to see if there were any Islamic fabrics in stock because I need them for a school project but the woman was very rude to me on the phone when I asked. I normally wouldn't leave a review but I called the quilted fox after and the attitude was completely different. They mentioned wanting to carry fabric for everyone and said they would keep an eye out from their suppliers. The attitude here was just plain rude and unwarranted I'd recommend the Quilted Fox instead as they are clearly friendlier and more inclusive. read more

O. M. G. !!!!!!!!!!! You guys. This place. I am SO glad I found this place!! It is the MOST DOPE fabric/sewing/crafting place everrrrrrrrrr! There. I had to get that out of my system, lol. It's kind of in a weird location, like it looks almost like it might have been an old legal building at some point and you might even miss it if you're driving fairly fast ish down Lindbergh and you don't happen to see the sign. Luckily, I found it. I am glad I did! I have a Baby Lock sewing machine, and I've owned it since roughly 2006 or so. I bought it in Pittsburgh from a place similar to Jackman's only wayyyy tinier and with less stuff and less staff. I've been sewing for a while (self-taught) and decided I'd loooove to take my sewing to the "next level." Yep, I wanted a serger! And not just any, but preferably a Baby Lock serger. I found Jackman's using the Baby Lock authorized retailer locator thingy. Apparently they're a platinum ranked sales center for BL stuff. When I stepped into the store, I immediately knew why. Insanely knowledgeable and friendly staff. Not pushy at all when it comes to sales. They don't work on commission AFAIK so yeah. Nothing worse than people desperately trying to sell you shit (I'm lookin' at you, Teavana!) LOL. But I digress. I had a feeling that the Baby Lock "Imagine" serger might be for me based upon my research and so the friendly sales lady, Patricia, took me to their floor model so I could poke around with it. Mostly I just listened to her explain all the features. Auto-tensioning. Air-jet threading. Hooooly F! I was like, trembling and drooling just looking at it. And plus you get lifetime free classes too. So killer! I plan to sign up for their January serging/overlocking classes so I can get the most out of my machine. It wasn't a cheap machine, but shit, you get what you pay for. High quality. Baby Lock is actually a STL based company which kicks ass! I had no idea until I was reading about it online the day before I went to Jackman's. The machines are designed here but manufactured in Japan. Very high quality. It definitely shows too as my roughly 8 year old sewing machine is still going strong. Of course I keep it maintained, though--it's like any other piece of machinery--routine maintenance will prolong the life of it. But yeah, there was also a special deal when you buy a serger where you get discounted thread for it...which is hella awesome! I bought a ton of thread. Also got some needles! Holy crap. I went into this store thinking I had a decent grasp of needles but dayyymn, was I wrong. I learned SO much just by talking to the wonderful Patricia. She even had this gigantic, over-sized needle and was able to explain to me, holding the big needle, the various parts of it and why they're super important when it comes to various types of sewing. Your sewing machine is only as good as the type of needle you put in it, apparently. Well, maybe that's an over-exaggeration on my part, but I am finding it to be somewhat true. Stretchy knit fabric requires a specific type of needle (ball point) and then the weight of the fabric also determines needle size. She also showed me a HELLA DOPE 10-needle, fully programmable Baby Lock embroidery machine. This thing is my DREAM machine. Holy shiiiiiit. It costs like, pretty much the price of a (nice) new car....like $17k. lol. But you are effectively buying a business when you buy one of these, and they even offer freakin' classes on how to start your own business, what you'd need for accounting, etc. How awesome is that?! Pretty mind-blowing, actually! I fully intend to return for classes, supplies, maintenance, etc. They also have a great fabric selection as well! A++++ would go again!! I know it's a trite phrase, but I am like a kid in a candy store at Jackman's. That is, if the candy consists of bolts and bolts of bright colored, adorable patterned and interestingly textured fabrics. Oh, and if you could make that candy into fantastic quilted creations that hang all throughout the store. Also, if the candy makers had classes to show you how to make candy creations yourself quickly and easily. And , if those same candy makers held candy club meetings to show you new tricks to making candy creations, and the new candies available...and gave out candy samples. So it's not exactly like a candy store, but I do feel like a kid oohing and aahing at all of the gorgeous fabrics available, and the sample quilts hanging all over. I am a fairly new quilter, and truly loved the hand-quilting class I took, and the quilt club meetings I attended. Check out their class listings on their web site. They have outstanding customer service, a very large selection of beautiful fabric, and fair prices. I had never even heard of Jackman's Fabrics until today, when I found them through an Internet search. I needed trim to match a dress. The color turned out to be very unique. One of the associates (Dee) patiently walked me through trims, lace, and fabric - in a VERY large store - and spent a lot of time on what was clearly a very small purchase by a first-time customer. She actually advised me against the final choice after taking the time to spread the fabric out in natural light. I will definitely be a repeat customer. read more

I don't sew, but my mom does. This was her go to store my entire life, whether she needed fabric for clothes or curtains, or just things like zippers and buttons. I spent a lot of time in this store with her when I was a child. Recently, she agreed to make me a wedge pillow so we went shopping together for material to cover it. I found exactly what I wanted...even though I didn't really know what I wanted. I also like the fact that it is next door to an upholstery fabric store. Jackmans is a quality store. They sell top brand fabrics and supplies at reasonable prices and if you sign up for their email, you are notified of the frequent sales. They are open almost every Sunday and Holiday. The material staff are efficient and friendly. No, the material side don't advise you much about sewing techniques, but will answer questions. The standard commercial patterns are expensive and you should get them elsewhere unless you are in a rush. Their specialty patterns are well priced. Their buttons, braids and trims are excellent and very much higher quality and wider selection than a consumer store like JoAnns. The sewing machine side staff are very friendly and will help with any baby lock machine questions, good sale prices, classes and repair. The ambiance is great. Huge selection of high quality quilting fabrics from Moda, Robert Kaufman, etc. Dozens of beautiful quilts on display. Lots to appeal to both modern and traditional quilters. My only issue was the woman who was cutting my fabrics was apparently new, and none of my cuts were remotely straight, causing loss of 2-4" per piece when squaring up. read more

Recently I took a class and learned to make a backpack, I talked all my friends into signing up also. I was so pleased with the results; I have made three more. Jackman 's has a large variety of quality fabric and I can always find what I need. The sewing machine department has the lastest machines available and when you purchase a machine there, they will give you lesson for life. Bolts and bolts and bolts of never ending beautiful fabric!. Everything that I've ever wanted and needed to find is all in one pretty (giant) store. Jackman's has so many varying collections and all are up to date. Large batik section, moda, fleece, flannel, children's themed, everything - also organized by collection so it's easy to pull complementary fabric quickly. Completed quilts with accompanying patterns hang around the store to provide inspiration and are close to the fabrics included. There are always a plethora of staff available to help with inspiration, fabric cutting, measurements, and general sewing advice. They also have demonstrations on a long arm and embroidery machines out for the playing. Watch for end of season sales - I just scored fat quarters for $1 a piece! read more

Summer/Fall 2013 I brought my Bernina to Jackman's Fabrics to be cleaned and repaired - it was making a clicking sound when sewing. They told me they could fix it. However, I received a phone call telling me they couldn't fix it, but they had cleaned it and the fee was $125. So, I paid the cleaning bill, picked it up, and found an authorized Bernina repair shop to make the necessary repairs. The second shop called me after evaluating my machine and informed me that it had not been cleaned (there was lint and fuzz in the bobbin and other areas of the machine) and that nothing had been done to it. I do NOT recommend Jackman's for Bernina sewing machine repair. Save yourself time and money and take your sewing machine somewhere else for repairs!! read more

The fabric dept will help you choose coordinating fabric for a project and finally the instructors are patient and take their time to help you, Lisa and Heather are the best.
