Huge restaurant and nice big patio with heaters. Nice bar and they have a happy hour menu too. Food was good and a large variety on the menu. Matzo ball soup was pretty good although the ball itself was not perfect. The cheese blintzes were very good, sandwhiches were elite, and the mish mosh soup was a generous portion! I've had deli sandwiches all over the country and this was the BEST pastrami Rubin I've ever had. The bread was buttered and grilled (but not soggy), the Russian dressing was homemade and tasty, the cheese was melted and gooey, the sauerkraut was heated with a little tang to it, and best of all, the pastrami was tender and flavorful with just the right amount of fat, and a little pepper. In addition, they give you bagel slices (toasted and seasoned) and kosher dill pickles while you're waiting for the food. The menu is 7 pages long and pretty much everything is served morning, noon, and night (see photos). It's not a cheap meal, but it is exceptionally good. read more

Today we went to J's Deli to give it a shot. We love Deli food and are frequent customers of Sherman's and Manhattan of the Desert. The restaurant had beautiful curb appeal. It was beautiful inside. Unfortunately, it was just OK. The food was mediocre but the service was terrible. We were greeted by a very nice hostess who sat us down right away in a very big booth. The restaurant was empty at the time. The busboy or waiter assistant came over soon after we sat and took our drink order. When he brought your drinks, he said the waiter will Be right over. We waited and waited and nobody showed up. I would say 15/20 minutes later I spoke to someone and he apologized and called our waiter. The waiter came over without any apologies and took our order, he did not have much customer service abilities. There was no small talk or a smile on his face. We were not looking for a best friend, we just wanted a good experience which is so important at any Restaurant. The food took a while to come as well, I would say 20 minutes, he just dropped it off, as he was leaving, I had to yell out to him to come back because he got something wrong on my plate. The food was ok, nothing special, I had an omelet with a bagel and a potato pancake. Joe has a grilled cheese with fries. One thing I didn't notice was the white dishes had many black marks on them from use. I wish I would've taken a picture of it. It did not make the food look very appetizing, it almost looked like dirt. We asked the waiter for a check and he dropped it off rather quickly. I honestly think we will never be back there again and we will stick to going to Sherman's and Manhattan desert for delicious deli food and service. read more

Overpriced and under quality. Was looking for a refreshing and well made salad by a deli but I could've made this at home with better substance and quality. Took away the Caesar wrap and it was falling apart and not prepared together. Front staff was standoffish but the wait staff was kind. Second chance. Last chance. Waited for a hostess for over 5 mins. Then she couldn't figure where to seat us. I said the patio. There was no one there but a few customers. She hemmed and hawed for several minutes. The tables were filthy and the salt shakers were filthy. Waited for silverware like 12 minutes after they brought the food. Food was tasteless. Plates were oversized. Had to ask for coffee twice. Coffee was good. Even sourdough toast and omelette had no taste, even after smearing toast with butter!!! Omelette sounded amazing. It came on a huge oversized plate and it was way in the corner. Bagels were small and tasteless. Glass case of danish and baked goods looked very underwhelming. Service was bad like last time. What is happening to our beloved J's Deli? Food used to be so predictably delicious. Now it's a miss almost every time. Breakfast today was bland and the hash brown was practically the size of a business card? Way undercooked and skimpy. The pancakes were so dried out and flavorless. On the positive side, the BBQ Bacon Burger the other day was amazing. But breakfast constantly disappoints now. Used to order once or twice a week from here but now I find it's less and less. Please bring back the quality and flavors that you had before, we miss it. read more

This is the second time at J's Deli and I won't be returning anytime soon. Where do I begin? First, ordered chopped liver sandwich, and found out 20 minutes later it wasn't available. A deli is out of chopped liver at Noon? Corned beef on Rye was average at best. Side salad that went with it was so small, you needed a magnifying glass to find it....Half sandwich ....half salad? Really? Another guest ordered the Asian chicken salad... Nothing but shredded cabbage and dark meat chicken strips. Not mixed together or blended. Tasteless! Another guest ordered the Eggs Benedict, which looked fine. Cobb salad looked fine as well. Prices don't justify the portions that supposedly are so large according to the owner! Nonsense! Jay's needs to really study their competition as they are clearly not in the big league of Deli's. read more

Started off the meal with complimentary pickles and bagel chips which were yummy (bought some after to take home). Split a cranberry tuna sandwich on multi grain bread which was fresh and tasty. I was here Friday night and they were out of the only vegetarian soup they offered. Came back today and they didn't have the chicken noodle and matzo call soup. They also came back after I ordered and said they were out of chicken. I ordered a cranberry tuna salad which was not great. The bread was not edible. The service was good and friendly. J's Deli, very excited that there's another Jewish Deli in the High Desert. Unfortunately, my excitement was not met with success. I ordered a lean corned beef on rye with fries. Well, the meat was not tender, and most of it was not sliced the right way, stringy and not edible. The bread seemed day old, not soft and certainly not great. When I brought it to the nice managers attention, she took it off our bill. [$19, 1.5 stars] Speaking of, not a lot of success here. Of the 7 meals my Mom, her friends, and I have had -- 5 have been comp'd. I want to like this, I really do...and I want them to do well...but they're not going to make it and that rate. We frequent the Palm Springs/desert area a couple times per year and we always saw we will stop by a new deli each time however we couldn't seem to make it to J's despite passing by almost every trip here. Well, today was the day! We made it in kind of early, before noon, and we made it in time to try one of the advertised breakfast specials. A good selection of things to try from simple eggs to more extravagant eggs Benedict. Prices are reasonable and the specials are a much bigger savings. The food was very tasty, hot and fresh. The dining area has many choices from inside, outside or bar area. We will definitely be back to try items from the lunch or dinner portion of the menu. read more

My partner and I came to J's Deli for lunch. We were a little cautious at first since both he and I have grown up eating deli our whole lives and know a good deli spot when we see one. J's Deli is a good spot and my review is as follows: Bowl of Kreplach soup: 4 stars For those who do not know, kreplach is basically a type of dumpling and it is usually made with chopped up brisket/beef/roast filling inside a thinly rolled out dough. The kreplach is usually served in a chicken soup (although I like kreplach fried with eggs in the morning too). The chicken broth is very good, although I prefer a richer stock flavor but to each their own. The stock is clear (as it should be), and comes with plenty of noodles for those of you noodle soup lovers. I am giving this kreplach soup 4 stars because my grandmother's kreplach is better but my opinion may be biased. Hot open face (Turkey): 5 stars I very surprised with how moist and flavorful the turkey breast was - no dry turkey here. Turkey is served atop a slice of challah bread, a side of mashed potatoes, and turkey gravy on everything. The gravy has small specks of mushrooms in it which added a depth of flavor, and the potatoes had a very good homemade taste to them. Service: 5 stars Staff is very knowledgeable about the menu items, and very friendly. I look forward to coming back to J's Deli and trying some of the other menu items and maybe even trying a cocktail! read more

We were so pleasantly surprised how great the krephlach chicken noodle soup was and so reasonable too at about 7 dollars for the bowl. My girlfriend said it is just like her grandma used to make it. They had really nice bagel chips and pickles on the table. Everyone was warm and friendly as well. I saw a giant pastrami sandwich at the next table. Their portions look generous. I bought some pastries as well . I love the onion bagel and the chocolate chip breakfast pastry as well. This deli has only been open one month! Nice job for such a short time in business. They are located about 7 minutes from my house in palm desert. I can't wait to try a lot more. They also have a bar and happy hour from 3 to 6. read more

Excellent all around. We stopped by for coffee and pastry while shopping. It was so good we decided to go back for dinner. The staff was very attentive. Server returned 10 minutes later to say they are out of roast beef so I ended up ordering the half turkey sandwich with a cup of minestrone soup. How do they justify $13 for OATMEAL, or $4.50 for a SMALL orange juice (it's organic...big deal!). $28 for chopped liver? Nope. I was hoping for some competition for Manhattan and Sherman's. Location and ambiance was inviting. The hostess greeted me with a smile. That started my visit off well. The menu had so many choices I would have selected. Our server was Hugo. I found it unusual that the bread selection was limited for a deli. But I managed to get a French dip on a delicious roll made with pastrami that was so tender and flavorful and French fries. My guest had the chicken salad, sweet potato fries and beef barley soup which they also enjoyed. To finish it off the chocolate cake was order to have at home and it was enough for two. I haven't tried it yet. Our busboy was Jaime who was a joy. He was so attentive, friendly and had the greatest smile. So I had to take his picture to share with you. We will definitely be back. I'm kicking myself for living so close to J's for over a year before going. Being from NYC, where "deli" means bodega, I was a little shocked walking into J's for the first time -- it's so much more than I expected! First of all, it's HUGE. Tons of patio seating surrounded by gorgeous deseet landscaping. Inside is super spacious, clean, and comfortable; there's even a bar that's like its own section. They have a pretty extensive menu with all the Jewish classics (even Dr. Brown's, and smoked whitefish in addition to whitefish salad!) plus so much more. There's something for everyone from breakfast to dinner and dessert. They have gluten-free bagels and even offer a gluten-free version of French toast! And a great happy hour menu that includes both reuben fries and loaded potato skins which have become very hard to find anymore. Can't wait to try both. Hubs got the whitefish salad platter with a GF bagel. It came with all the right accoutrements (cucumbers, capers, etc.) and the whitefish salad was really good, not too mayo-y. I had the Lox with Latkes with fruit salad. Latkes were good, not greasy, fruit was fresh. Nice presentation all around. Service was exceptional. Our waitress Crystal was so nice and welcoming. She told us they make EVERYTHING (except the rye bread) from scratch in-house. Prices are very reasonable. We'll be back regularly for sure. read more

I'd say it's average at best. Ordered a salami sandwich and a few minutes later they told me they're out of salami. (How is a deli out of salami at the beginning of the lunch rush) So, I had hard salami. It was served with lettuce and tomato slices which seemed odd for a Jewish deli. Portion was a bit skimpy but adequate. Chicken soup was a bit bland but not the worst I've had. The restaurant dining room is decent. Kind of a weird vibe in there so I'm not sure I'll return.
