They make their own pork scratchings and they have a fine balance of rust to fat to skin ratio. They are very moreish; just make sure you have strong teeth. They also make their own Black Pudding, I remember one day watching it being made in the shop, and it wasn't a pretty sight. The sight of it being made is the opposite of how it tastes. Brown's further delves into the black pudding paradox. I still come here for special occasions, despite no longer living in the area. I know that Brown's is the best for all my butchery demands.

Eric Lyons also stock home-made pickles, chutneys, and the more unusual Madhuban Honey Garden (the perfect brand name for Indian influenced cuisine made in rural England), fresh and hand-made curry sauces. On the drive over here I was discussing with my driver my considering being a vegan. All that is in doubt now that I am positioned over the meat cabinet on the other side of the shop. It's filled with traditional chops and steaks, and some more unusual products. Turkey Balti sausages are another example of Indian meets English, and while I wont' be buying them in the warmth of late May, they are a top contender for Boxing Day supper. We leave with two chilli burgers and two minted lamb burgers, for an early evening barbeque, but I'll return for a proper mission here later this year and I'll be sure to have plenty of room in the freezer.

Most of the meat is prepared on the premises and they even make their own sausages from time to time. Their beef and lamb mince is always of a really high quality, as you will see when you cook it and hardly any fat is created. Their best product, though, is their bacon, which is thick and very, very tasty. They also carry a selection of pies and pasties, smoked cheeses, plus sauces and condiments for cooking meat. In the summer they do an excellent range of meats for use on the BBQ. At Christmas and Easter time the queue is often out the door, and the shop is often busy on Saturday mornings, which should tell you that this is a place much admired by the locals round these parts. This is the butcher whom my family have used for years and I can confirm that every Sunday a piece of Lockhart meat has graced our table and satisfied a demanding family of brummies. I don't really know the price of meats etc, I mean as a student the closest thing I usually get to meat is a late night kebab, but Lockhart certainly seems reasonable and they provide good produce. The shop was very busy which was a good sign and looked clean from the outside. I wasn't sure about the meat being in the front window even though it was in a covered glass case however that was my only quibble. The guys behind the counter were all very helpful and polite and the final bill although high was about average for what I bought. On cooking the bacon and sausages I was quite happy to see no manky white stuff came out the bacon and was happy with the taste. The sausages I was a bit disappointed with as the casing was quite tough. Still, not bad. The Sunday roast was brilliant. No shrinkage and the meat was tender and juicy. So this butcher is recommended, but I'll stick to my usual one.

So, I have lived in the Jewellery Quarter for around... Ohhh... 7/8 years now. When I first moved in my budget was majorly overstretched (working a shop job on minimum wage) so shopping on Birmingham Markets was really my only viable choice to actually get some fruit, veg and meat on the plate 7 days a week. We (me and the other half) very quickly came across Mick's van on the corner of the market (opposite the Bullring Tavern). For a bargainous £10 note, Mick furnished us with chicken breasts, steak, pork chops, lamb chops, a pack of bacon and sausages. All of the meat was great quality and ever since that first encounter we have been firm fans. We now tend to go for a £20 bundle and get much the same (except with the occasional bit of stewing steak, chicken portions and whole chickens in the mix). Just £20 tends to sort us out for meat for around 6 weeks (keeping in mind we have at least two vegetarian meals in a week). A trip to see Mick is always like visiting an old friend. If you haven't been back for a while he will enquire as to what you've been up to (in a friendly way, not a pushy one), ask how life's going and let you know about any new or exciting stock he's managed to lay his hands on. We've had everything from Turkey crowns the size of your head to duck breasts from him in the past and it's always been great quality at a great price. If you're looking for something to BBQ, he offers set packages at a set price but state your budget and let him know what you're looking for he will set you up with the best deal you can get. Don't get me wrong, you can certainly get a wider selection in the Indoor markets; but if you're looking to buy meat for a family you won't find better value than Mick The Meat and his big white van.

I was most surprised by the selection of roasting joints they have on offer here. I bought a large side of beef for a Sunday roast and some pork scratchings for the journey home. The pork scratchings were delicious and everyone enjoyed the beef on the day I cooked it. If there is a piece of meat there that is too big for your occasion then they will cut it down to a more ample size for you, no questions asked. I would be happy to come back here again because the quality of the meat is so good. I'm fed up with pre wrapped meats in supermarkets so I need a good selection of butchers close to my home.
