A variety store with…read moreeverything you could want Prudence Island Variety is THE store on the island. Outside of a few local veggie stands, the only store, It is frequently referred to as Marcy's place after the wonderful woman that kind of hovers over the area. And no, Prudence Island Variety is NOT in Newport. As usual Yelp refuses to accept the address I put in and places the store some place where it isn't. And so it goes. The front door and porch is only a few steps from the ferry and as in the case with most small island general stores, it also serves as the post office, local book exchange, place to post or read local notices, look for lost pets, trade info or just sit around and shoot the crap with people. It's hard to believe but a casino once stood on the spot where the small store is now located. The hurricane of 1938 eliminated the casino as well as most of the other buildings on the island. The store hasn't changed much over the years. The addition of the Del's lemonade machine was the one huge addition. They always have fresh coffee, locally made muffins and pastries, a small case for frozen stuff, lots of junk food, and a sundry collection of mugs, shirts, key chains, pictures and stickers with the Prudence Island logo. At various times pizza, sandwiches, and small hot meals are offered. Everything is pretty much at the whim of Marcy so you never know exactly what they will or won't have at any given time. It's just a small place, sort of messy, dark, unorganized with Marcy scooting back and forth from the post office to the store, lost in her own world. You patiently wait for her because you are definitely on island time once you go through that door. But then that's a big part of the charm and appeal. It's easy to imagine the store looking and operating exactly the same way many, many years ago. If you ever go to the island you will stop at this store. Buy some junky survivors perhaps or some treats to enjoy out on the porch or on the picnic tables over looking the bay. Maybe get sniffed by some of the local dogs, talk and laugh with the very friendly and interesting local people. Perhaps even start to observe Marcy's routine and wonder exactly what in the world she is doing.

This is local, small and community minded. ​

When we arrived, we were the only ones ordering at the deli counter. I ordered the falafel wrap and he ordered the Italian grinder. We also picked a carrot cake slice, a piece of tres leches cake and a peanut butter cup cookie for good measure. Once the meals were made, we took them home to eat. The guy who made our food asked me when he was putting the wrap together if I wanted "everything" on it. I asked what everything meant, and he went down the list of veggies and sauces. I told him that the only thing I didn't want was peppers of any kind. Despite this, the wrap had two different kinds of peppers. The falafel inside the wrap was cold, dry, and fell apart like sand. It was hands down one of the worst falafel I've ever eaten. Unfortunately that's not where it ended. Hubby's sando was terrible, he said the sauce on the grinder was so heavy handed, he couldn't taste anything inside it. The desserts were not much better, with the cookie being dry and crumbly, and the cakes being ok but not great. The wait time for these items to be made was pretty long, and even with that long wait time they were not well made, or even made according to our personal order. I don't know of the quality of the items, because they tasted so bad, we got maybe two or three bites in and chucked them directly in the garbage. Prices were ok if they had been worth eating, and service was slow and inaccurate. I'm not sure what the hype is here, but it's definitely not for the items we had at our visit. We will definitely not be returning, given how many other better options exist in this area.

Thought... bad day.. few months later I go back, super nice young guy working, we were chatting about different liquors since I'm a baker and he gave great advice. Same owner comes out and reprimands him for talking to me, I told him "you've got a great employee and you treat him like crap. He gave me great recommendations but you're an abuser. Well, I found a 750 ml bottle of it at Vicker's Liquors on Bellevue, but it was $35! Since I knew Sons of Liberty made a smaller bottle, I thought I'd keep looking for that, which I hoped would be more affordable. The other day I happened to be on the corner by Island Wine & Spirits so I thought, hmm, let me see if they have the smaller bottle there. So I went inside and lo and behold, they had the 750 ml bottle... for $20!!! That's a whopping $15 less than the same bottle at Vicker's!! Not only that but the clerk was super-friendly. Now I know where I'll be headed next time I need a bottle of something.
