A solid, working gym. Big (mostly) clean facility, unbeatable hours, easy access, friendly mixed…read morecrowd. Tons of equipment, even a 25 yard pool (you do have to reserve a time slot in advance, and in person). All good. Can't speak either way about the trainers, which I've never used. But back to the equipment, and here's the thing. They NEED all that equipment, because they use it poorly. Most gyms I've ever been to, people get on the hardware, do their reps and move on --- but not here. It's really astonishing. I've never been in a gym before where people simply sit motionless on the machines for 10min+ at a time, mostly staring at their phones (haven't seen any laptops, yet). And not just one or two people, everybody. Sure, people are cool about wrapping up if you ask, so no biggie. But it's weird. Is this actually a coffee shop and I can order a latte? Or is everybody really just hanging out here to look buff and meet people, and this is how? Don't get me wrong, you can still get a workout in, it's just ... odd. The other, maybe not coincidental, knock is the showers (not the cleanest btw, but perfectly adequate). There's not much hustle there either, which means there's usually a queue. At my old club I was regrettably one of the slower shower-ers, but man I'm the fastest here. Again, just ... odd. Maybe the women's showers are different. So: four stars for the good facility and pool, minus one for the Starbucks culture and another .5 for the showers. 2.5 stars --- solid, functional, not great; but then, not priced that way either.

Have tried to talk to management about this twice to no effect. Women's shower area is usually…read morefilthy and now two of the six showers are broken, and a third has a broken light so you have to shower in the dark. One shower is down for 6 months, the second for 6-8 weeks, light broken for at least 2-3 weeks. They bought lots of new workout equipment last year, but no effort put into maintenance. Had tried to get two friends to join, but they were both turned off by shower area. I hope they get serious about cleanliness soon.

If physical health, efficiency, and accountability are a priority for you, then you should consider…read moresigning up at Fit Theory. I'm a pretty sedentary person and peeling me off the couch after a long day at work is nearly impossible. Fit Theory helps keep me more active than I would be, gets me in and out in 30 minutes, and keeps me on a consistent schedule. Regular gyms are often packed, no one cleans after themselves, and stuffy, but Fit Theory takes care of that my running multiple 1-on-1 sessions simultaneously so you aren't waiting on other people, prioritizes cleanliness, and has multiple air purifiers. It's a more pleasant atmosphere. What I like about Fit Theory is the convenient location on El Camino between the intersection of Mountain View, Los Altos, and Palo Alto. Since its in a central location, you can come in from work and then run errands right after. The property is large and has plenty of parking in the back. Signing up for classes is easy and flexible with an online app. Classes are individually tailored, but capped at 4-5 people per time slot. Everyone is really friendly and supportive. The 4-5 person cap per half hour time slot means that you save time by not having to wait for machines like you would at a gym for equipment that might not have been cleaned. You save a lot of time by getting access to the equipment you want and when you want it.

I joined FunLife in November 2024, and it's been a great experience! Their workouts remind me of…read moreCrossFit WODs, but it's not exactly like CrossFit because I think they slow things down to focus on good form, and the coach-to-athlete ratio is smaller. Each day of the week has a different focus--upper body, lower body, conditioning, Olympic lifting--and they rotate the workout cycle every 6 weeks. This allows for progressive overload, and just when I think I've mastered the form, the program changes and keeps things fresh. Due to my main sport, I have an irregular schedule, so I appreciate that they offer a variety of flexible membership plans. A major perk is being assigned a personal coach who checks in with you weekly for the first 12 weeks and then once a month thereafter on paper. In reality, I see my coach Carina more often than that from attending sessions where she is coaching, and when I go to open gym. Carina has been incredibly helpful in supporting my specific fitness goals for my sport--crewing in dinghy team racing and working bow in big boat sailing. She created a custom workout plan (which she updates every few weeks) that incorporates the exact movements I need, like pulling ropes at specific angles--something I haven't been able to find anywhere else. She also helps me address any random soreness from other activities with targeted stretches and mobility work. The gym also has an InBody machine that you can use anytime to track your progress. I've seen a measurable decrease in body fat and an increase in muscle mass, which is very validating. This review might make it sound like I'm really into working out, but my natural state is being a potato. What gives me the extra push to haul my butt to the gym is worrying that the dogs Koa, Koda, Kona, and Loki will forget what I smell like if I skip a week. (Those are the regulars I see, maybe there are more fur angels?!) They're all super sweet and provide much-needed dog therapy. And if you're not into dogs, don't worry--they're well-behaved and won't bother you. I think I need a conclusion paragraph. Basically, I have found that FunLife is a good investment in my physical and mental health (yay dogs!) because of the flexible membership plans, variety of sessions, coaching, and other nice-to-haves like open gym sessions and the InBody scanner. Highly recommend!
