I went to one other nearby bakery before I found this one. This bakery had several birthday cakes that were already prepared, which is what I needed. We are having a surprise birthday party today for a co-worker and we needed to have the cake ready to go. They only needed to add her name to the cake and that was it. The cake is quite large and it is beautiful like someone spent a lot of time preparing it. The service was good once I got someone's attention. read more

My friend taught in Tela, a small beach town in Honduras, many years ago. He left with some dubious Spanish skills, and a deep passion for baleadas. When he discovered J and S bakery, he became a regular and is slowly converting all his friends. We've also had the wings, pupusas, tamales, horchata. Estoy muy decepcionado con mi experiencia en J and S Bakery. Esta es la segunda vez que vengo, y en ambas visitas la situación ha sido inaceptable. El mes pasado encontré un pelo en mis frijoles, y cuando se lo comenté amablemente a la mesera, lo tomó con indiferencia y me dijo: "Ah, eso ha estado pasando mucho últimamente", sin mostrar empatía ni disculparse. Decidí darles otra oportunidad y volví hoy, esperando una mejor experiencia. Lamentablemente, fue aún peor. Pedí una sopa de marisco y, para mi asombro, había una cucaracha flotando en la sopa. Aunque la comida tiene buen sabor, no hay justificación para encontrar pelos o insectos en los alimentos. Además, la actitud del personal es terrible y el servicio al cliente es pésimo. No recomiendo este lugar; no vale la pena correr ese riesgo. I'm extremely disappointed with my experience at J and S Bakery. This is my second time here, and both visits have been unacceptable. Last month, I found a hair in my frijoles, and when I politely brought it up to the server, she nonchalantly shrugged it off, saying, "Oh, it's been happening a lot lately," with zero empathy or apology. I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and returned today, hoping for a better experience. Unfortunately, things got even worse. I ordered a sopa de marisco, and to my absolute disgust, there was a literal cockroach floating in the soup. When I told the same server about it, she accused me, saying, "That wasn't in your soup." I was shocked--where else would I find a roach? Instead of apologizing, she snatched the bowl and left without saying anything. She never came back, and I had to get up and ask for a refund myself because she clearly wasn't planning to follow up. While the food tastes good, there's no excuse for finding hair or bugs in your meal. Add to that the terrible attitude from the staff, and this place becomes impossible to recommend. The way they treat customers and handle complaints is completely unacceptable. Please do not eat here--it's not worth the risk. read more

I was looking for a bakery. This turns out to be a restaurant with some sweet goods in cases. I got a cannoli looking pastry and a fruit tart looking thing in addition to some lomo saltados. I enjoyed the lomo dish. It wasn't really anything like the sign on the menu but who am I? I love lomo on a menu and I pretty much order it. The meal had rice and a little lettuce salad and the lomo w tomatoes, peppers, onions. The most surprising thing was as I ate the whole bottom was filled with French fries. Happy surprise but I had hoped for plantains as the pic showed. It was good. The cannoli thing os not made of ricotta so my daughter was happy to eat it (is it buttercream? I don't know). The tart was ok too. The creamy part of the fruit tart tasty vaguely chemically but I enjoyed the crust and the fruit on top. read more

The food is really good here. I would stay away from Tres leches. It's mush. You'll have to excuse the mess they are working on another section. Seems like the place that use to be another store closed and they took over. Good for them. Be patient with the people taking your order, they don't speak English well. Show compassion for them and show kindness. Warning: The male patrons will make women very uncomfortable because in the Latino culture I have been told if they don't look like they are checking out the women, the women will take it as an insult. I'm convinced this place hates its customers English speaking customers, today I came in with 3 of my friends and we waited over 45 minutes to get our food. Which was the most simple food you could get. I asked for a refund for this skimped looking elote. The manager refused to give me my money back laughed at me and smirked at me and told me that I have to eat that disrespectful looking thing. Then she argued with me when I asked to speak to the manager saying that she'll be right back and never came back and when I went up to her she she said that the manager doesn't care to speak to me. The quality and value of the food is fantastic. The beef soup had four or five giant pieces of short ribs, some with marrow, more than double what you get at a Korean restaurant for their beef soup! The soup was also extremely flavorful, and also came with rice and tortilla. Fajita mix was also fantastic fresh off the grill, with SO much meat. Two adults could've easily split that for a meal. It was a little intimidating because I don't know any Spanish, but the cashier was nice and knew enough English to take my order. I will definitely be coming back here next time I'm craving something flavorful and filling. read more

Hole-in-the-wall strip plaza cafe. Very busy on weekends, we got there on a Sunday just after 10am and not long after we sat down a long lineup formed. Tons of seating now as they have a front & back section which I think is newer. Several big-screen TV's playing soccer - super foreign and cool. All Latino customers here which is a good thing as far as authenticity. Staff did speak OK English enough to ask us about options in our order. You order and pay at the counter, then they bring food out to your table. All disposable tableware here. And beware - portions don't look filling but they will make your stomach explode. *Pupusas: We ordered the "mixed" which is a set of 3 pupusas, I'm going to assume a pork, a cheese & beans, and a chicken - based on my tasting of them. They are fresh tasting, lightly greased, encased in corn flour. They aren't the most filling-loaded pupusas I've, had but the quality is still very delicious and excellent for the price. *Tacos de carne: YUM!! Corn tacos with beef, and plenty of fresh chopped veggie fixins in the tacos. They are very generous with lime wedges that are actually almost half a lime each, and you get two lime pieces with your order of two tacos. This made me feel like I was down in California again. *Yuca con chicharon: Fried yuca strips with humungous chunks of pork rinds and Salvadoran pickled slaw. The pork chunks are lightly yet beautifully flavored with a tough outside and a somewhat juicy inside. The slaw here has more of a tomato flavor which seemed overpowering - I usually like a more tart sour slaw to complement the savory pork. Nonetheless this dish was excellent. Multiple ladies on Yelp have complained here about the men who stare. I'm a man, came with a man friend, we're not Latino, and we got stared at quite a bit - but it was only from an old couple. In my culture (Vietnamese) many older folks will stare at the non-Vietnamese customers because of our amazement and curiosity that they enjoy our food. I would hope that this old couple at J&S meant the same thing. Just give them dirty looks and glares when they stare at you and they will turn away. No biggie, what are they gonna do to you? And I'm so coming back here, so glad I live just a few blocks away from this gem of an authentic Salvadoran cafe. read more

May be the best Central American restaurant in the DC area. The food is always great and fresh, but does come at a bit of a premium compared to competitors. The service however could use a massive overhaul and the owner could invest in better takeout containers instead of cheap plastic and flimsy styrofoam. One time I was forced to buy an extra dessert because they forgot to charge for a side I ordered when I first paid and said the minimum sale for credit cards is $5.... As a business owner myself, this is an awful business practice. Ambiance could use plenty of investment, but I imagine as long as the owner sees they're making money they will not spend a dime attempting to improve it. In general, the restaurant sells delicious food but the quality of the food is diminished by the cheapness of the "packaging" so to speak. read more

YOU WILL BE SERVED THE DREGS FROM WHATEVER DIRTY POT IS ON THE STOVE AN HOUR AFTER YOU ORDER. My wife and I walked in since we were in the area and we read their street menu which advertised soup. There seemed to be a lot of people in there and it seemed nice. There did seem to be a regular turn of people and, after 15 minutes, we noticed the people who had ordered before us get their food. We had not ordered anything complicated--just some soup and some light fare. When it reached 30 minutes since our order I stood up and started looking around. There were only a couple people from when we came in who were still there. The owner came in and took off the extra cash from the cash register. Then, at 40 minutes after our order, I noticed that the people who had ordered with us leaving--having finished their food!! I started inspecting... The kitchen was wide open and I was shocked how dirty and in disarray it was. It was at this point we demanded our money back and I heard 2 terms I had hoped not to hear. One of them was "gringo" and the other "puta." If I could give these people a minus 5, it would not be a low enough rating! We promptly left and went to the Thai restaurant right around the corner. We were promptly and politely served and left a nice tip--even though our server seemed to be running the whole show. WE WILL NEVER SET FOOT IN THIS RACIST DIRTY PLACE AGAIN! read more

Love this place. Real Honduran food, and not overpriced. Yes, the vibe there can be uncomfortable at times with all the "construction workers"-type guys that stare. But as a latina, what I do is stare back and they suddenly look away. I've had their baleadas, tamales, desayuno típico And taquitos/flautas. All good. My husband has had their more heavy options but he isn't crazy about their tajadas (which were just part of the overall dish). I am not a fan of their pupusas but to their defense they are Hondurans, not Salvadoreans but I do enjoy everything else. My husband actually enjoys that camaraderie of those crowds there. I don't mind it, but I know to outsiders or people of other cultures, it can leave a bad impression and ruin the experience. Ordering can be chaotic they don't seem to have a reliable method developed yet but other than that, 5 stars for the good food at relatively low price. read more

This place is a hidden gem! My boyfriend and I stumbled on this place about a year ago while looking for a place to eat over by the springfield Kmart. It is located on a corner of a shopping center on Commerce and it's not a very eye-catching place. When we went in, it was apparent that every person in there was hispanic. We didn't mind being the only white people, except that they were all staring, which made me feel self conscious. We stayed and looked around and discovered that in addition to selling baked goods, they also have an extensive menu of (near) authentic El Salvadorean food. I ordered the tacos and pork and cheese pupusas. Everything was incredible!! I highly recommend the pupusas if you go, they were delicious! Everything is served in large portions and each dish costs approximately $6. We enjoyed our meal immensely and have gone back several times, and plan on continuing to do so. As for the bakery portion of it, I got a muffin one time I went and it was just as delicious as everything else I've gotten from there. I am a very happy customer! read more

I walked into this little place on the corner on a whim, and saw they had a good amount of Mesoamerican food. I'm a sucker for tamales and pupusas, and they advertised both. I ordered 3 pork and cheese pupusas with the intention of getting sweets afterward, but they were so wonderful and filling that I only finished two of them. I was pleasantly surprised by this "bakery," which does have baked goods. However, to satisfy my next sweet tooth, I'll be getting the tamales de elote. The atmosphere is pleasant, there is a large TV high on the wall that showed a soccer game, they have Coke products in a soda fountain and also fridge units with bottles and cans, and they bring your food out to your table if you order it "for here." They were happy to provide me with a "to-go" box for my leftovers. The only complaint I have is in regards to one of the people in the bakery. I'm sure it was an off day, but a gentleman (for lack of a better word that's G-rated) who appeared to be doing maintenance of some sort up by the front windows was just awful to a customer who walked in, and then to the employees/manager of the store. He said some very uncomfortable things at an uncomfortable volume. I think he was hired help for the lights, though, and I'm sure he won't be back. read more

Tried their Napoleon (?) cake slice and pink strawberry cake slice. I wish they had labels and prices for the desserts, but I didn't know how much anything was until check out. The pink cake slice was $3 plus .15 cents tax. They also have sandwiches and Latino food, which I haven't tried. I would come here again. It's a nice hole in the wall place, and almost all the other customers were Latino, so it must be legitimate. read more
