Over the previous two years or so, Las Huertas went slowly but steadily downhill - the shelves were progressively more bare, the fruit and vegetable selection tapered off, and the variety of available meat was steadily reduced. That steady decline has been reversed by the new ownership, and Carniceria la Tapatia is better than ever! Full display cases of delicious meats and seafood, queso fresco and other south of the border delicacies. Lots of hard-to-find* salsas, hot sauces and canned goods. The shelves are full of staples again, and the racks are filled with fresh tortillas, cookies, fruit, beans, vegetables and other delicious fare. If you stopped going to Las Huertas during its final months, it is now time to return. * - Hard-to-find in south metro Denver, that is. We don't speak Spanish fluently so we have to use Google translator at the meat counter (still ended up with 3lbs of steaks instead of x3 steaks haha!). The selection was pretty good and all the hot prepared food looked really good- especially the chicharron. We definitely got a lot of weird looks being the only non-Spanish speaking Caucasian people in the store, but most everyone we encountered was nice. I brought my own bags as they charge 25 cents per bag. The girl checking us out at the register could have been more friendly. She made us feel a bit more out of place than we already felt with not even a half smile the entire encounter. The ladies at the meat counter were much more friendly. We will probably skip coming back to avoid feeling awkward for buying food, but overall it is a great store that is well stocked and nice and clean! They also have outstanding prices!

At one point, 10 years ago, I read how all of New Mexico's chili farms were being converted to GMO and the people of New Mexico were outraged (*see footnote, link below). I found this article in my archives but it's been replaced online with more assuring articles but what of the seeds..it's all convoluted now. My family has been buying chili in the Denver area since the 40's. I grew up with the process and eating it and I can testify that chili is much different by comparison. This year I returned to my reliable vendor, the chili was pretty sorry, I went to new guy in Golden and it's like dealing with a shell game and the chili was sorry also. I then decided to go BACK to Lulu's farm. I ordered a bushel and the bag I got was brimming with chile, probably a bushel and a half. I get home, tasted the chili and (literally) the chili's texture and taste was like egg plant. I was shocked but I remembered that on the way home from the farm that the inside of the car smelled only faintly of green chili...I'm returning everything I bought from them that day...I simply don't trust the label AND I gave Lulu's a second chance that day. 8 months ago I bought 8 bags of frozen chile...all of it was worthless...just can't seem to get away from it.. I returned the items in the pics and there was no argument, no questioning. There were two young girls who appeared, one wore a very inappropriate pair of Yoga pants for her curvy body style and age, but they quickly grabbed the bag of chili as if they were on a mission from God and bolted down the aisle and straight to the back...odd...I was shocked with the manager. There was no concern but later I realized I wasn't the only one to complain. The prices on standard brands you can find at your local King Soopers seemed a bit higher but that is not why you are shopping here. It's for the items that aren't available at typical stores. Prices on items I purchased (produce and bakery) seemed less expensive. The bakery items were yummy!
