Much Better to charge an extra buck but not be stingy with the food. The Godzilla roll was huge and delicious. The beers are a buck off before 7 PM. The waitress was great. Wish I could remember her name. A tall very helpful Asian American. Our only objection is less than comfortable seating I guess it's part of the ambiance. I went on recommendation from a nail tech. It's a small sushi bar that has open seating. I was warned not to go on an empty stomach as the wait time for food can take up to 45 minutes to an hour on a busy night. I sat at the bar at the server was extremely helpful. There was only one person serving as it's a small establishment, but he was on top of things! The owner is also the chef, and I was told that he offers a small menu because he likes to use the freshest fish possible. I ordered the pork katsu as a starter and the tuna and salmon nigiri. The katsu was breaded and fried to perfection, it was crunchy and tender, drizzled with a katsu bbq sauce and paired with a spicy kewpie mayo for dipping. The nigiri was extremely fresh! The salmon and tuna melts in your mouth with each bite. I have to agree with the nail tech who recommended Izzy, this is the best sushi establishment in Tallahassee. read more

Great hang out. Love the high tops inside the place. It's not a big dinning hall. The atmosphere is casual and relaxing. Not noisy so we could hold conversation. There are also outside covered dinning area with about 5 or 6 tables. Even restaurant is located by Tallahassee midtown, there's ample parking behind the restaurant. Izzy serves Japanese and Pan-Asian small plates, and sushi. Good variety of sake, beer and wine. We ordered sashimi dinner as one of our appetizers. Fish was fresh, no complaints. I also had a Korean short ribs bowl. Meat was tasty grilled. Portion was good, not small. We were a big group and food was served in a timely manner. The food was delicious especially the daily soup which was a curry soup was outstanding. The edamame was good but made delicious with the plum sauce or whatever that was. The drinks were excellent. My volcano roll was ok, I didn't care too much for it. How we the dinner was good. Inside there was a very strong smell so it's better to sit outside. Benton was friendly however he was the only server so there was a little wait sometimes which was totally fine on a rainy week day when they did not expect it to be busy. This is an excellent hidden gem in Tallahassee! The gyoza is some of the best I've had and their Hawaiian Poke Roll is amazing! I would also highly recommend the "Trust Me" roll, the chefs make some excellent (secret ingredient) rolls. The service is always great but get here right at 5 or it will be very busy and possibly a long wajt. We just had dinner here on a whim. We have driven past this spot so many times wanting to try it. We will definitely be coming back. The service was phenomenal and prompt. The food itself came out very quickly and the quality of the fish was excellent. I chose the trust me (chef curated roll) and I can say without a doubt it is one of the best sushi rolls I've ever eaten. The price point for the sushi here is definitely worth it compared to some other places I've eaten at. They also offer a unique variety of options if you are feeling adventurous. This was probably the worst dining experience I have ever had in Tallahassee. Maybe my experience was an anomaly, one of those where nearly every element of the experience hit a speed bump, or maybe Izzy's needs to do a better job at quality control despite how business the restaurant becomes. I found myself here with my girlfriend because we wanted to go to a casual place for a date night where we could get a good light meal and drinks. Seating is definitely limited and all tables were full, so we ended up at the corner of the sushi bar seating. We started with drinks. I had a beer recommended to me by the server, a sour that she said was very popular. I tried to drink it but it really wasn't something I could get behind and I will say the server politely switched it out for me. No big deal. Appetizers were first a miso soup and second a dumpling plate. After 35 minutes of waiting the miso soup came out and it was cold. My first thought was that maybe this was a new thing they were trying, so when I asked the server she apologized, agreed that it shouldn't be cold, and took it back to the kitchen. Round two of the soup was upgraded to a luke warm. Edible, but definitely not enjoyable. Kind of like when you microwave leftovers and only parts of it are warm with other parts still cold. You go ahead and eat it just because you don't have the motivation to keep trying to correct it. At the 50 minute time mark the dumplings made their way out, and they actually were not too bad. Not sure why an appetizer takes almost an hour to come out, but I would have let it slide. That is if the entree delivery would have been timely. On the contrary, at the 75 minute mark since initially ordering a single sushi roll, the server comes over and informs us that our roll was made and given to the wrong table so they were making us another one now. My first thought was why am I paying $18 for a single sushi roll to be given to someone else? Maybe I won't have to pay for it because a comp for a mistake like this might cost the restaurant $4-6 but could potentially keep the customer. This did not happen, nor was it offered. After over 90 minutes the roll finally made its way out. It was known as the Godzilla roll and was actually delicious, but the timing and price ruined it. I am usually not one to complain, but this just seemed unacceptable. Especially for a place that I imagined would be trying to make a name for itself and keep customers in a competitive Tallahassee restaurant market. Sadly, I highly doubt I will ever be back. For the sake of the other patrons I hope they receive better treatment. read more

I know I can't find the same - or even just close enough - quality of Japanese cuisine or sushi and sashimi I can get with the same price in Seoul or L. A. or NYC..but when I really need to eat some sashimi and a bit of izakaya type food, Izzy is the only place in tallahassee that fit the bill. It's a little too pricey and some of the dishes are really not worth the price tag, but the quality of fish they use here is better than any other sushi places in tally. I also like going here for occasional lunches (3 roll special for $17.95 or so. At dinner, 3 yellowtail rolls without salad or soup would be $24..)& rice bowls. Things that I am willing to spend money on and will go back for - Sashimi dinner (like I said the fish quality is better than any other places), pork belly rice bowl with fried egg, Korean chicken bite appetizer (a bit bready, but the chicken is moist and the sauce is good enough), and simple rolls. Occasionally I like to order the pub fries ($8/11) Gyoza is pretty good (better than other places with below mediocre dumplings tasting like frozen items from Asian grocery stores), but 6 tiny gyozas for $9! If you're a roll type person (rolls covered in sauces and condiments), maybe this is not for you as there are other places that have decent rolls at cheaper prices. But the sashimi is better here. This is my favorite sushi place in town! I typically get the "trust me roll", their sushi chef's whip up delicious rolls every single time. I also like the variety and creativity they use when creating these. I've also had their seaweed salad... hands down it is the best in town! Very fresh. The Katsu bowl is also amazing. It is a smaller restaurant and you can expect a bit of a wait on weekends, however, they have a great ambiance and you can see the chefs creating the rolls in front of you. Izzy has very fresh and tasty sushi. We tried the rice bowl with Korean curry this time, and it was excellent!! They have every other table blocked off due to Covid, which means there are only 3-4 tables available inside, plus the bar. There are a few tables outside, too. Sensory: I know it's common to have TVs over the bar, but they were distracting since my husband and I were there on a special date. I really didn't like what was showing, so I asked the waitress if it could be changed since no one was watching it. (Something I never do!) The manager agreed, which I really appreciated. The music was techno, which was anything but soothing, but it wasn't very loud. We really like the intimate setting of Izzy and the great food, but the TVs and music make it hard to enjoy for an adult date night. We ordered two Trust Me rolls (different everytime its made), Hawaiian Poki, Big Easy (think new Orleans meets sushi) , Ichiban and seaweed salad. OMG. Loved the creativity of each roll. All flavors were complimentary and each bite was a flavor bomb in your mouth. Not a large draft list, but def had a few I've never heard of. Trust them. No, really. The "Trust Me Roll" is unique, made-to-order, and never disappoints. You never know if you'll end up with jalapeno and mango, a fresh tuna topping with cucumber, or maybe the whole roll will arrive on fire. My standard order is "Trust me. Nothing fried." The trust me roll tends to take them a few minutes longer to make, but it's worth the wait. And while you're waiting, consider an edamummus to start. The edammumus is a spiced (but not hot) edamame-based hummus served with fried pita. The pub fries are unlike anything I've ever had before, almost an Asian-inspired poutine. The very filling Godzilla roll also deserves a mention. It's loaded with seafood and different textures. They undoubtedly serve the best sushi in town. My friends like to pair it with the house sake on draft, but I tend to stick to something on their long beer list which is always interesting. Izzy's covers all the basics that you would expect plus more. The beer and sake selections are plentiful. The speciality rolls have always been delicious. I don't think I've ever had the same bartender twice, but that doesn't seem to matter because each trip I received great service and knowledge about the food or the drinks. Parking can be tricky on the weekends as pace is limited everywhere in the Midtown area. I typically don't eat during "prime time" so I've never had to wait except the one time I arrived at the tail end of the dinner rush. If sushi is your thing, Izzy's is a hidden gem. read more

I really wanted to like this place. The place is beautifully decorated. It's a small business. And who doesn't love sushi?! I was impressed with their sake selection. It's rare in Tally to have more then a handful of sections (of usually the same types) and just takara plum wine. I have fond memories of going to izakaya's with my family. They're good times filled with good food and good people. However, the vibes at izzy didn't really fit in right. First of all, we had the lunch special. It was expensive for the amount of food you get. The sashimi special is one tuna roll (I had asked for tuna to be subbed out for salmon in the roll, but it just came out with tuna) and assorted sashimi for $14. The sashimi is sliced very small. You would get a better deal at Siam, Tally Thai Sushi, or MASA. The quality was decent but I'm not sure if it was worth $14. It comes with soup and salad which is pretty standard fare for tallahassee. I loved the alcohol selection. They even had my favorite proof beer on draft (creatures of the dark). I have always been a huge fan of mango nigori sake. It was delicious. It was way overpriced, but I didn't mind cause it's standard to price your liquor at that mark up. I'd order it again! Now for the vibes: The decoration in the place is on on point. The wood paneling is nice and I loved the drawing of doak and Godzilla. Very Asian American hipster vibes. There was a super friendly bartender there. He had glasses on and should get a raise! He was outgoing and great. However, I was not a fan of some of the other vibes. There were other employees at the bar that were giving my boyfriend and I looks. For reference, he's black and I'm Asian. We are used to strangers in Tally directing bad vibes our way at this point wherever we go. I know it was beyond the restaurants control, but the people at the table next to us were making us hella uncomfortable with the looks and comments directed towards us. Came in on a Monday evening for dinner, business was lite so there was plenty of parking available and plenty of seating available. I have attempted to eat here on weekend evenings and the wait was 45 minutes to an hour and a half so I would definitely recommend reservations for a Friday or Saturday dinner at Izzy's. I was greeted and seated almost immediately. I ordered a hot green tea which was a tea bag in a coffee cup full of hot water instead of a multi-cup tea kettle. I prefer a tea kettle so I can consume it throughout my sushi meal. Starting with the edamame they used a salty seasoning blend which tasted excellent. I then ordered a Ichiban roll which is primarily a spicy tuna roll loaded with tempura flakes, cucumber, avocado, sliced tuna, tobiko and eel sauce but the "honey-wasabi-mayo" was what caught my eye on the menu. Excellent. I then ordered a Hawaiian Poke roll which consisted of spicy salmon, avocado, cucumber, tempura flakes topped with tuna tataki, tobiko, spicy mayo and wasabi mayo. Delicious as well! My waitress was Vanessa who did a good job waiting on all the tables. My food came out relatively quickly and my visit was overall very pleasant.
