I can not rave about Dr. Izquierdo enough. I would recommend him to anyone with any sort of orthopedic injury. Not only is he excellent in his field, but he also deeply cares about his patients. He is by far the most personable doctor I have ever come in contact with. Aside from this, I have had the privilege to observe him perform various surgeries. It was from this experience that I truly understood his skill and talent for orthopedic surgery. I watched his skillfull hands perform surgeries on the hand, forearm, and shoulder. Although the shoulder is his specialty, one would think he these other areas were also his specialty because of how well he performed them. I also know that he is very good at repairing, replacing, and reconstructing the hip and knee. I particularly remember a time when I asked him why he decided to become an orthopedic surgeon. His answer was that he was an anatomist and he absolutely loved to continually learn about the human body. It is important for a doctor to love what they do and to have a continual thirst to learn more. This combined with a genuine love for patients promotes an ideal doctor because he will always strive to do his absolute best and make sure that his patients feel comfortable and confident in his skills. Not only did I get the unique experience to see this side of Dr. Izquierdo, but I was also one of his patients. As his patient for 2+ years, I was very confident in his ability to help me heal of my ailments. The reason I started seeing Dr. Izquierdo is because of the difficulties I was having with a previous orthopedic surgeon. My previous surgeon performed two ACL surgeries on my right knee. After 18 months of rehabilitation, I was still having problems with my knee. I got many great recommendations to see Dr. Izquierdo, since he is one of the best in the Chicago area. Within the first five minutes of meeting Dr. Izquierdo, he was able to identify the cause of my injury - something my other surgeon could not figure out after working with me for two years. I had a rare tear in my knee, which if unnoticed, will likely cause a re-tear of a reconstructed ACL. Unfortunately, Dr. Izquierdo had to completely redo everything in my knee that my previous surgeon had done since the previous surgeon had done such a terrible job. After being a patient of Dr. Izquierdo, I have never felt more confident in the health of my knee. Because of the personable characteristic that Dr. Izquierdo shared with me as one of his patients, he has been a great mentor to me. He readily asks me about my life and family whenever I see him and has been able to give me advice about the medical profession I have ahead of me. BACKGROUND: I am a 50 year-old man and I have had a total of 11 surgeries (all mechanical fixes in nature...no internal organ repairs, cancers, etc.). I am a fitness enthusiast and was once a competitive powerlifter. PRE-SURGERY: My pre-surgery experience was excellent. Dr. Izquierdo was conservative in approach; rehab, cortisone injections and finally invasive surgery (all this over a 22 month timeframe). He is skilled in explaining technical terms and medical risks simply. He is also very encouraging yet still grounded in reality and empirical methods. SURGERY: The actual surgery (November 2018) from Dr. Izquierdo was as follows: 1) a prior SLAP repair (for torn labrum, done in 2006) needed to be re-accomplished 2) bone spur shave-down and 3) biceps tenodesis Surgery was completely successful. POST-SURGERY: I have seen him twice (it's now Jan 2019), and we've had extended discussions around my rehab and progress. I have full range of motion, I am nearly pain-free and I'm gaining back my strength. ASSESSMENT: Dr. Izquierdo and his team are a rare blend of world-class technical capability with genuine and demonstrated care and concern. I referred my 22 year old son to Dr. Izquierdo for his chronic knee pain. Tyler has had long term knee problems due to a condition called Osteochondritis Dissecans which required surgery at the age of 14. That surgery did take care of the condition, but not the chronic pain. After going over Tyler's MRI images and doing his own clinical exam, he injected both of Tyler's knees as well as ordered Physical Therapy. The benefit of the Physical Therapy was that he specifically indicated what kind of PT was needed. Previous PT did not bring much relief. It has been over 6 months since the injections and the PT, and Tyler continues to benefit from the care that he received. He is almost completely pain free a well as has gained strength & stability from the Physical Therapy that Dr. Izquierdo ordered. My father went to see Dr. Izquierdo for shoulder pain that he was having due to a work related injury. We were very happy that after receiving the recommend physical therapy and steroid injection he improved. It was refreshing that Dr. Izquierdo gave us all the options instead of just recommending surgery. I was referred to Dr. Izquierdo from a friend. I had severe shoulder pain for over a year. I ignored the pain and continued to work out. After being in pain for a year I seen another doctor located by my house. After two visits with him and only receiving the answer of shots don't work you may need surgery, I decided to move on. After seeing Dr Izquierdo 3 times and using his recommendations of PT and necessary changes at the gym, I found myself with 90% of my range of motion back and very little pain. My wife needed a complete shoulder replacement. Because of her weak bones she was referred by the best surgeon in Rockford to Dr Izquierdo. There was just enough bone for him to get the device attached but he also grafted more bone for any future needs because of her condition. She has had a replacement on her other shoulder and rods in her back. So we are very experienced in getting medical care. I had a massive tear in my rotator cuff that rendered it virtually unusable. Dr Izquierdo felt he could repair it and prepared me for an extensive rehab. The surgery went well and I started my rehab after several weeks of having it immobilized in a sling. Slowly I have been returning to normal day to day use of my arm.
