We were in St. Croix for the day, one of our port stops on our cruise. After the excursion we were…read morehungry and we both are so adventurous that we wanted to try some local cuisine. There was an open-air market right at the end of the port dock so we talked with several of the locals selling their wares.
We were led to Tail End Bar and Restaurant via the recommendations of several local people. So glad we went!!! This is a small mom & pop restaurant and walking in you can smell all of the wonderful spices and flavor from the foods we were about to eat.
We talked with the owner and explained our situation and need to try local foods and allowed her to make up a plate that included many of their specialties. We were not disappointed one bit! Oh my gosh...talk about food with such a special taste and all of the textures were amazing! Neither of us had tried Ox Tail before and although the wife didn't care for it, I loved it! I'm sure this is something that everyone makes differently so just going somewhere to order it may not be best because my first experience here was so good. It's flavorful and tender, albeit a bit fatty and full of bones. Loved it! We also had rice and peas (traditional Caribbean fare), stewed chicken which was flavorful and rich, Kingfish in Creole sauce (we both didn't care for this, it had a bit of fishy taste for me), and stewed pork. We also tried their version of Provisions, which is simply root vegetables cooked together with rich seasonings. Our version had sweet potatoes, plantains, and yams. We loved this dish!
While we were eating we observed many locals coming and going, some ordering and eating there and others getting take-out. We could tell it's popular with the local residents! Overall we had a great experience here and I want to say thank you to the owners for providing such a great meal for us!
