So my whole group and I happened to walk by Kilwin's, located in the heart of downtown Plymouth, over the weekend during the Ice Festival and it just felt like the perfect place to stop in after dinner and before ending the night. Yes, it was like single-digit weather, but I can always go for Kilwin's ice cream! My favorite ice creams they carry are the ones with streaks of fudge in them. I think in the past there's been one that's Mackinac Island Fudge flavored or something like that, but they didn't have that one available, so I oped for their smores flavor instead, which had fudge streaks, graham cracker crumble, chocolate chips, and marshmallow ice cream. It was so light and fluffy and the perfect balance of ALL flavors. I loved it! There is so much more to Kilwin's as well other than ice cream. I also went home with a caramel, but tons of my other friends got drinks (cold and hot), adorable chocolates, like chocolate covered orange peels and truffles galore, and of course FUDGE! Do yourself a favor and check out Kilwin's! They have locations all over Michigan and I think in other states as well. But they definitely originated in this great state (specifically, in Petoskey I believe!) and always scratch my itch for fudgey goodness without being on actual Mackinac Island!

I felt interested in buying several of their unique flavors of chocolate candy bars. The sign near the display said that the cost was $4.99 each or 3 for $12. I selected 6 candy bars and went to the checkout. The cashier did not seem to be enthusiastic about her job. She rang up my purchase for about $30. I assumed that tax was included, but it was not. Unfortunately, she had already processed my husband's credit card. I mentioned that the price was supposed to be $24. She said that she did not know about the sign for 3 for $12, and she apologized. I asked her twice if she could give me a refund of $6, and she refused. As for the taste of the candy bars, they were decent. My favorite flavor was the Toasted Graham Cereal 'n Creme Bar. The other flavors were not as strong, and I tasted mostly chocolate with them.

The owner is the one who was there and she was friendly along with being helpful. The selection had many of the candies that us of the older generation grew up with and loved. While the big discount stores might beat the prices, they are more than fair. They are small but try include modern idea of a wall you can do selfies in front of. I went and getting the cart was pretty hard in the beginning because my coin wouldn't go in and someone had to help me, but once I got my cart, I went inside. It was a little smaller than I expected, but I was so impressed by all of the items that they had and yes, that includes everything in the aisle of shame. I definitely bought something from that aisle. The staff are really friendly. Everyone was nice, but just an FYI, you need to bring your own bags.

Worse than that, many of the cashiers act like their pants are on fire, racing to scan food items and ungently dropping or practically throwing them into the shopping cart in a haphazard manner. The service is friendly, if not a little too watchful of your perusal however the food is both bold and mute. What I mean by that is for each of the flavors you either have too strong of a flavor or too light of a flavor. For instance let's take a look at two classic fudge flavors, peanut butter and chocolate, the chocolate is far too strong as if there is too much cocoa powder and the peanut butter it too light tasting mostly of powdered sugar instead of peanut butter. Not to say it isn't inedible ( that would be a 1 star review) but with how strong the flavors are it isn't preferable. This applies to all the flavors and other items as well. The other items such at the truffles are hard, not due to anything like nuts but because the chocolate isn't made to be soft yet stable. Getting something like Lindt truffles from a grocery store far beat out the truffles here unfortunately. This trend is continued with the other items available as well, nothing hits the spot and is either too strong or too weak in flavor and texture.
