This review is not about Vernon's at all, it's about the restaurant, the Tipsy Kitchen in Vernon's…read more You seriously need to go there TODAY to get some great food. I first fell in love with The Tipsy Kitchen when I had their White Chocolate Mistress about a couple of months ago. Y'all! Seriously! So good. It's like a shortbread cookie/brownie combo, some say cookie, some say brownie, I say it's just yummy. Anywho, it has a base of magic yummyness and a thin layer of a raspberry compote and it is topped with the thinnest of slivered almonds. When I have them, I eat it in the morning with coffee. It's the best. Now, running neck and neck for first place of best dessert ever against the White Chocolate Mistress, is the Guinness Car Bomb Cake. Y'ALL!!!!!!!! For Pity's sake! So darn good. Killing me. I do not know how they do it, but yeah.... they do it. It is some kind of baking sorcery. I'm almost certain of it. Their baked goods may be the star of the show, but their food is really good. I am not kidding. The burger and fries are so tasty. The burger actually comes with chips, but I ordered it with fries. HOWEVER, I can see why it comes with a bag of chips instead. After eating the burger, I had no room for the fries. I had pulled a pelican -- you know, where the pouch holds more than the belly can. Another thing they do very well is the home cooking. About a couple of weeks or so ago, I went to V to have a pint and a loungey chat with some friends and then the plan was for me to just go home, have my nightly yogurt and get ready for bed. Well, that didn't happen. When I got there, I met an old friend I hadn't seen in months, almost a year, and he kept banging on about the pot roast. Pot roast, pot roast, and I gave, I said, "What are you talking about?" He said, "The kitchen, tonight they have pot roast." Honestly, I thought they just had menu items. I didn't know they had SPECIALS. I checked into it and of course I left with a bag containing dinner for that night -- the aforementioned Pot Roast and a White Chocolate Mistress for the next morning. The Pot Roast was fork-tender. It just fell apart. The mashed potatoes were excellent, and I could have eaten a bowl full of the glazed carrots. Sometimes when people make glazed carrots, it's all sugar. It's nasty. These on the other hand were amazing, not overly sweet. The only thing I was slightly disappointed by was the fish and chips. But that's my own fault. I don't like beer battered anything. Beer batter is a hit and miss thing for me. Mostly miss. You have to have the oil screaming bloody murder hot for it to get at all the batter so that way there will not be doughy spots of uncooked batter. I've had the pretzel bites, the wings, the fries and home cooking and the desserts, I can honestly say, aside from the beer batter, I have not tasted a misstep from anyone in that kitchen. It's just really, really good. Why aren't you there already?

We always come here because it's a chill vibe and sometimes there's always live bands. They also have a restaurant in there which I haven't tried yet. The menu looks pretty good though.

The Gold Fish has proven this long-held collective pessimism wrong. Originally a cocktail bar only, it has now expanded into a cocktail, beer and wine outdoor/indoor bar, which makes complete sense given the city's demographic demands. It was actually one of the first businesses I was most concerned with us losing permanently during the pandemic. And I am so glad they have stuck around! It is a modern cocktail bar at its core, which makes it very unique to this city. This is an obvious adoption of cocktail bar trends from other larger cities in Texas. It is very nice, with a wide array of adult beverage options for discriminating consumers to chose from. The atmosphere is perfect, and the bartenders and staff are top-notch and super nice (the attitude is refreshing compared to what one may be used to recieving from such establishments in larger cities). I usually only come here when I have company from out-of-town, as I do not go out for drinks very often. At my most recent visit, I had just experienced a personal tragedy that I only briefly alluded to our bartender when she asked how our day was going. The amount of sincere compassion we received was not expected at all. My only regret is that I did not get her name, or else I would have gladly included it in this review.

We brought our dogs and were glad to see it was dog friendly with plenty of seating options. There were regular chairs, high chairs, Adirondack-style seats, bench tables, and umbrella-covered spots. Lots of places to sit and spread out. We went inside to the bar first and noticed they made carajillos. We ordered a couple before getting food. They were excellent--espresso with Licor 43 and a touch of orange. The flavor was rich with a hint of citrus, and they were only ten bucks, which felt like a steal. Food is ordered separately from a walk-up window or using a QR code. It was their first weekend rolling out the QR system, and there was a glitch. When we ordered through our phones, someone else's order ended up on our tab. Not a big deal--they voided it and fixed it at the window. For food, we had the fajita steak hash, ahi tuna tostadas, croissant beignets, and empanadas. The hash was solid. The eggs were cooked just right, the steak was tender, and the potatoes were crispy and well seasoned. The tostadas had great flavor. The tuna was fresh, and the sauce on top blended citrus, spice, herbs, and cheese in a balanced way. The empanadas were golden and crispy on the outside, with soft, spicy potato filling inside. The beignets were standout--bite-sized, puffy, and packed with flavor. They came with two sauces: a chocolate one and a creamy vanilla-orange sauce that paired perfectly without overpowering. Overall, the food and drinks were excellent. The QR code issue was a hiccup, but hopefully it's fixed now. The only downside was the subwoofer. It made the place vibrate a bit too much and felt unnecessary. It was also a little warm, and more fans would have helped, but it is summer so it's understandable. Good spot to hang out, and being dog friendly is a huge plus.
