I've always had great experiences at Agway. Unlike the big box stores, you don't have to wander by yourself through interminable aisles hoping to find someone who can help or direct you to the right location. The staff is friendly, and multiple times someone has taken the time to walk me through all the details of a challenging project. The garden staff is also excellent and really takes the time to help you identify the right plant. I can't think of very many Ithaca businesses where most of the staff have been working there for so long. read more

I've been shopping at this store for decades--back when it was True Value--and the decline since the switch to Ace is shocking. What used to be a friendly, helpful neighborhood hardware store now feels like a cold, chaotic warehouse run by people who would rather avoid customers than help them. The aisles are cluttered with stacks of products crammed so high it feels more like a storage unit than a store. Items I used to grab quickly are now scattered in bizarre places, and trying to find anything is an exhausting scavenger hunt. What makes it worse is the staff. The old team actually cared and would walk with you to the product you needed. Now, employees sit at desks, glance up as you wander around lost, and then go back to ignoring you. When you finally force yourself to ask, you get nothing but vague pointing. Heaven forbid they get up and actually show you where something is. The so-called new management is even worse. The guy running the garden department in particular has managed to turn one of the best parts of the store into a reason to never come back. Instead of listening to customers, he argues. Instead of helping, he brags about his "degree" like that's supposed to mean anything to someone who's been gardening since before he was born. It's insulting, condescending, and flat-out unprofessional. The spirit of the store is gone. The warmth, the helpfulness, the sense that this was a place you could rely on--it's all been replaced with arrogance, rudeness, and a corporate feel that has no place in Ithaca. If this is what being "Ace" means, count me out. I'll gladly take my business elsewhere. read more

I have shopped this store since 1987 and my loyalty is now challenged. The reorganization feels capricious and the additional products piled high make me feel assaulted as they loom overhead. When employees, now men at desks, should be paying attention to customers looking for the far flung products in odd places, they are not. They can see people looking lost but ignore them and when asked for help they don't get off their butts to show people where things are. Pointing in vague directions is rude. The new guy -manager? -in the garden department is a true jerk and I will find other places to buy those products. He disagrees with the customer and makes claims about products he has likely never used and is altogether disagreeable. i have been gardening longer than he has been alive. Touting his horticultural degree is in very, very bad taste. Gone is the friendliness and easy to find items and gone will be long time loyal customers. True Value was fine and now you do all this to be part of ACE? I have no loyalty to ACE. read more

I made a large purchase from Ithaca Agway. At some point I had a problem with this purchase which caused me to be upset. The owner and general manager, Andy Boerman, was diligent in correcting this problem and made sure that I was, once again, a very happy customer. Great place for all your last minute project needs! In case anyone needs to know, they have super-cheap pots, soil and a ton of paint. The employees were also more than long-suffering with us as we debated the merits of large-flower-pots or small flower-pots for a fund raiser. Everything one would expect from an Agway! read more

I purchased 2 apple trees (2 different types ) 3 months ago from Agway. When I got them home, I noticed that 1 of the trees was not as vigorous looking or leafy as the other, but I proceeded to plant them. The one tree that was "not as vigorous" continued to slowly decline, and, 2 months later clearly it has developed rust, a dreaded apple tree disease. I went to Agway today to talk about the tree and to request a replacement. In short, the man I spoke with said "no". He insisted the apple tree acquired the disease after I'd purchased it. I know this is not the case. The tree cost about $45. I'm willing to pay more but, at the same time, I expect them to stand by their products. 2nd problem: I was at Agway a few weeks ago with my corgi. As I was exiting the automatic doors from the inside to outside garden, the automatic doors shut too quickly and clamped down on my corgi's body. The poor creature was unhurt, but terrified. The saleswoman outside explained to me this had been an ongoing problem that she'd reported several times. Her concern was that an elderly person could get hurt, nonetheless, nothing had been done about it and I should report it myself. So I did. I had the feeling it fell on deaf ears. I'd like to patronize local businesses, but in light of the above, I cannot continue to shop there. read more

I walked in looking for help. Got NONE. Asked cashiers who were sitting doing nothing where paint scrapers were. "49" was the answer. I don't even know what a paint scrapers looks like, so with no help, I left. This is why I don't shop in thus store and won't try it again. read more

Every time I go to Agway in search of a specific screw, bolt, hook, rope, hinge, spring, etc., I find it.

Sometimes hard to remember that the Ithaca Agway often has better prices and as good of a selection as the big box home improvement guys. One thing that is invaluable about the Ithaca Agway is the friendly advice from people that really know their stuff. I mean, if you're buying a rake, you don't need too much help, but when you're trying to kill those little moths in your kitchen, of that bug living at the base of your pumpkins plant, this is the place to go! You'll never find a kid at the big box joint that knows about the rake, let alone the bugs. Power shop and feed store across the street do a good job with bulk fertilizer, chains and chainsaws, etc. read more

WOW! The service does not get better than this. Let's start in the early morning... I woke up around 11:36 am to hear the wonderful birds chirping outside my window. As I got up out of bed and looked outside, to my surprise it wasn't the normal chirp that seemed to be filled with enjoyment. This had a unfortunate, "sad" tone to it. Almost as if these beautiful creatures were crying for help. At this moment, around 11:40 am, I knew it was my responsibility to get down to a store and find them some feed to bring back that excitement in their voices... After extensive research, I was on my way to this very location. In seek of a man who knew more about the seasonal feed for the birds around the area. As I walked in the doors, I laid eyes on the man who I knew was the man the town had been raving about. Bright eyes, a welcoming smile... it HAD to be him. After sharing our stories he understood the severity of the situation and JUST how to fix it. He knew exactly what I needed from scent, size and weight right down to the last grain. After cashing out, the generous man helped load the pounds of feed into my car so I could save the day! Bringing this feed to the local birds was quite the sight, let me tell you. It was something only few could ever see in their lives. All types of wildlife were quite literally jumping for joy as this feed was spread around the yard. Not only did I end my day with a refreshing drink and a smile on my face but I was able to hear the sounds of excitement and happiness from the birds in the yard. Agway-Ithaca has been my go-to place for all house project and lawn supplies for at least 10 years. There's always someone knowledgeable to help me out if needed, and usually it's someone who has worked there for many years. On more than one occasion, I've left the store empty-handed when an employee told me how I could make a repair without the product I thought I needed. read more

In the past I have always had great success at Ithaca Agway, but it will be awhile before I utilize their service in the future due to the inability to repair a lawn tractor as I requested. Parts were given them that they rudely told me were wrong, but the parts came directly from the tractor maker and proper replacement parts ( I received three of the four back, in a half inch of water). Parts on the machine that were necessary for use were not returned and wheel covers were missing. Not a great experience at all - to bad as they have been so good in the past. read more

I love nothing better than going to Agway at this time of year and seeing the walls of seeds ready to be purchased, to walk into their warm and bright sun room full of green houseplants. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the stock is broad enough to serve most of my needs, but in a small enough store to retain a hometown feel. The only problem I have with this store is that their selection of perennials is not as diverse as I would like it to be. read more
