Queens hospital connected us with Islands Hospice and we truly appreciate the excellent service, professionalism and compassion.

We've used them for both my dad and mom as they transitioned out at different times. From the initial intake nurse to the nurses and CNAs who came to the house, we felt very supported. Any questions or concerns were addressed right away. They helped us get the medical equipment we needed to assist us in keeping my parents at home. When the end came, a single phone call brought the nurses to the bedside who helped us thru the process. We were assigned a chaplain at the start who called to offer any spiritual support and would visit. Appreciate the sensitivity and support we received from Islands Hospice. Mahalo ! read more

Islands Hospice has been a great shoulder to rely on throughout this pandemic as well for the past couple of years. My family's experience with Islands Hospice started in 2016 when my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. From initial conversation to his unfortunate passing later that year, to even most recently when we've been going through the same process with my grandmother (during a pandemic, mid you) every encounter has been pleasant and comforting. My family and I trusted Islands Hospice to care for my family like their own and that's exactly what they've done, and more. Patient, compassionate, informative, and supportive, are only a few of the words to describe the immense amount of care my family has received. This is a review for Islands Hospice-MAUI My sister-in-law Karen had a stroke on Monday, August 17. By Saturday, Aug 22 it was apparent that her body was failing. The hospital explained we needed to have 24 hour care arranged before she could go home with hospice support. I spoke with the weekend hospice liaison multiple times on Saturday. She was extremely helpful and suggested which of the care providers on the list given to me by the hospital were the best. Unfortunately, only one of those recommended agencies took calls on the weekend. Since Karen had been in the ICU, she was considered a possible contact for Covid and that one agency didn't have anyone willing to take the risk. On Sunday morning I called additional agencies and one of them called Ashley who is a community liaison. Ashley gave me the name and number for All Care Hawaii which is based in Lahaina where Karen lived. She also called them first. So when I spoke with Jermie at ACH, she was ready to go. By Sunday afternoon she had found caregivers for all day shifts and by Monday morning she had nailed down the overnight spots. That meant that Karen was able to return home by 6 pm Monday evening to her husband, best friend and animals. This was her fervent wish. She died that night a little before midnight. The only reason I did not give them 5 stars is because Stephanie, Karen's best friend who was waiting for her at her home, just explained to me that hospice did not communicate well with her during the transit. I live in California but my husband and I were her POA for Healthcare. I had informed hospice that Karen needed to be lifted up 15 very steep stairs. Hospice told me they would coordinate with the fire department to do that lifting. Stephanie told me she didn't even know where Karen was while she was in route. Then once she arrived they had no way to get her upstairs. Eventually hospice did call the fire dept who brought her up the stairs. Stephanie also said that the nurse from hospice was great. read more

Islands Hospice went above and beyond in supporting our family as we cared for my grandmother-in-law, who suffered from Dementia. Everyone involved worked so hard to make sure her final years were as comfortable and safe as possible. Dementia impacted grandma both physically and psychologically, and her needs escalated every month. Hospice provided us with the guidance, resources, and skilled staff we desperately needed to keep her safe and calm. After our nightmare at Queens hospital we decided to go with Island hospice to do homecare. They were recommended by a great doctor.. We decided at 8:30 in the morning to do hospice and Jason the hospice liaison nurse (amazing) met us at 10am and by 2:00 pm a transport van came to get my mom and her bed was waiting at my home when she arrived. The transport van allowed me to ride with her which is something they don't normally allow, but Jason worked that . shortly after she arrived two gracious nurses arrived and evaluated her head to toe and showed us how to move her etc. They told us she was in the final stages in what they called a euphoric stage and that she only had hrs/days to live. It is amazing how they know this. Also, they sent a social worker over immediately that same day. . He was great but I forgot his name. The next day a nurse named Rebecca came and she was amazing. Queens gave me my mom's medication in pill form and because my mom could not swallow meant I had to crush them. what a pain in the butt. I didn't think I could get liquid form so never asked. Rebecca ordered liquid form and it was delivered to my house very quickly along with a anxiety pill. She also mentioned that The O2 she was getting was prolonging her life . My mother told Queens she wanted to be off all O2. Queens told us it really wasn't doing anything but keeping her comfortable. I am glad Rebecca told me the truth since she knew we didn't want my mother to suffer anymore. She told us the exact time to give her meds and everything went smoothly. My mother never suffered again once in hospice. We were with her when she passed thanks to Rebeca's feedback. When my mom passed , Rebecca came right over and was just amazing. She talked to my mom and arranged for a pick up immediately. I am so grateful for this amazing nurse who just really made my mother's life so peaceful in the end. Rebecca was amazing and really knows how to do her job well. We are so grateful for her advice. read more

I had no doctor, there was no doctor on staff, they brought paper cups of pills morning to evening with no explanation. Told him I didn't have a doctor I needed to go home they wouldn't discharge me they kept dosing me with oxycodone listed as an allergen. I didn't know how long I had slept for days. A few pills were identifiable and against my healthcare they had no record or awareness of so threw them out. There was no doctor I had no doctor they were giving me controlled substances!! Refused to discharge me discharge papers finally said I completed physical therapy when I didn't need physical therapy and they didn't even offer or provide it. People there were screaming and screaming they kept giving them morphine. Buy a house and take care of your family please. Food was opposite of my dr diet and was forced to eat a little kept getting migraines. When I asked where the pills were coming from what they were doing my record say I was "obtuse about medical questions " using narcotics without a doctor or condition is a felony If you're just trying to get rid of some of your relatives for a while at least monitor and observe participate what they're doing read more

Would not recommend if you're taking a loved one home for care, there is no continuity of support received from RN team and after expressing concerns there was no follow up by management, like they don't ca The stars are for the CNA and most of the various nurses. However, there was no RN "team" assigned to the patient, in 10 days 5 different nurses came to check on patient.My mom was under Islands Hospice care for 2 weeks in that time there were 9 different nurses that she saw, they were all capable nurses, but the continuity was lacking, although the Aide was great and so was the Social worker. Islands hospice sounded good from the beginning, but they are a competitive business for hospice service, once you get established it is difficult to make the decision to change so I did not, although I wish I had. I had been caring for my mom for 7 years prior to needing hospice service to allow her to die at home with dignity, I was under the impression they would support the patient and the family, but seeing someone new every RN visit (except her last) was very disorganized and not supportive for the family and especially the patient. I called to express my concerns and the manager did not call me back initially, I requested records which I never recieved. I will NOT EVER recommend Islands Hospice service. They didn't even notify my mother's primary care provider after she passed and he said he would sign the death certificate. So much miscommunication with all the different people that came in. I had a great experience with Hospice for my aunt, fortunately for her it was not Islands Hospice. read more

While my Mom was at an assisted living facility, her medical issues increased, and she was eventually diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. It was untreatable due to her age and overall condition. I checked into Hospice because even her oncologist could not give a time frame as to when symptoms would start. I spoke with staff at the assisted living facility to find out which hospice they worked well with because I wanted a good match. Based on what they told me, I contacted Islands Hospice and was grateful that they accepted her in their care. She was pretty much symptom free for 2 years, but the nurse assigned to her made weekly visits, more as needed (falls, etc.) even after hours. This year, after a bad fall in June and finding a growing mass in her left abdomen, she became weaker and weaker. Signs of transition (end of life) progressed until she passed away yesterday 12/27/23. From my first contact with Islands Hospice until she passed away, office, care staff, social worker and chaplain have been excellent! They were caring and took A+ care of both Mom and me. Islands Hospice is definitely the best of the best! read more

Rating scale = zero THE hospice CHARADE: Hospice death is an epidemic in the United States. Not all are created equally. IMPORTANT: Your loved one may not need hospice. If discharged, get him or her to her primary care physician first. Even if you don't have equipment at home. The hospital must make arrangements with the doctor to order what is needed. First before you put any loved one in hospice go to Hospice Patient al Alliance website. Second do not let a hospitalist BULLY you into rushing discharge or the case manager to call the hospices for you. Forget the brochures and call the hospices yourself. Third if you feel something is not right with your hospice care: TRANSFER immediately, find another hospice! Four you and your family are the only advocates for your loved one. Trust all your instincts. Would love to get comments from those whose loved ones have experienced death from hospice at home or any other negative consequences of hospice. Especially recent in Honolulu. my deepest sympathies to any of you who read this and my condolences. Oh by the way, yes my dad just passed away. No not disgruntled like some may want to label me. His grandaughter, two great granddaughters, my husband, myself and two privately hired CNA's watched my dad drown in his mucus that filled up his lungs while hospice nurses came checked and said he's doing fine. We were told we couldn't take him to the ER if he was in hospice. It was too late by the time the family said f*** hospice, got him to the ER and started the suctioning. (Suctioning he needed from the lungs, not the suctioning machine HOSPICE give you.) Of course we told them. We were told to go to the store and get robitussin....what a joke. For those who had a positive experience or they'll THINK had a positive experience with hospice...great. I don't conclude that all hospices are unethical. I don't need their names or positive comments. This post is not for you. read more

We were referred to Islands Hospice because we needed a hospital bed for my 100 yr old mom who lived in her own place. We already had wonderful qualified caregivers coming during the day while my brother and I would alternate staying overnight. All I can say that they were outstanding and on the ball from the very start. From qualifying us to providing the needed bed along with diapers, lotions, palliative care drugs, CNAs to assist with bathing, nurses checking up on her, gloves, bed protectors, etc. My understanding was that hospice would provide assistance to the caregivers and that's exactly what they did. They even had a pastor come visit her several times. They made the last 5 weeks of my mother's life as comfortable and caring as it could possibly be and I can't thank them enough for that. read more

Six months have gone by since my mother has passed and now I think I can write this review. Islands Hospice took my mother on when another Hospice would not. I have only a few things that I felt were inappropriate but in comparison to all that was good and the people that I came in contact with during Islands Hospice care for my mother outweigh anything negative I saw. Considering that my mother was my best friend, next to my husband, I was very emotionally wrapped up in the care of my mother. I had been through this with my dad and by far this was the hardest thing I have done in my life. The positive things are that they kept me informed. A lot of things that were done for my dad when he passed in a hospital, I had to do for my mother. Hospice isn't there 24/7. But they are on call. And they helped me a lot. Towards the end they brought someone in for training. This person was not familer with what was already done for my mother and at her end stage of life was uncalled for. And I got upset that I had to go into a review of everything that was already practiced. My mother passed away very soon after that, and they had talked about getting her up and moving around. I'm just glad I was at my mother's side to keep my mother from experiencing more pain. Islands Hospice brought in all the equipment needed. They explained all that needed to be done. They were informative, supportive and efficient. And afterwards they took pack all their equipment. One other thing I don't really like was the follow-up. They offered grief counseling but only on certain days. All days and times I could not attend. They also offered a Chaplin, but again, not on the hours that I could have benefited. He was very appreciated though, when he came and anointed my mother's head. I look on that with great fondness. When my mother passed, one of their workers were never informed of my mother's passing. I was texted that the lady was going to make a visit at a certain time. I had to tell her my mother had passed. This was almost a week later. I felt sorry no one had told this lady. That should make Islands Hospice aware that they need to communicate more. I'm still grieving, but I'm getting along okay. My mother was a strong Christian and she knew where she was going. She talked with one of the her care providers and I heard her say, "Yes, I'm dying. What so bad about dying?" She knew she would soon be in the Lord's arms and I knew it too. My job was finished when I was there to see her last breath. I was alone. Islands Hospice wasn't there, but they came later. We had to help in preparing the body (my husband helped when he got home). That is something I will never forget, but maybe that was my cross to bare also. I am thankful for Islands Hospice. read more

A few positive individuals on staff gets a star. Visiting CNA's had compassion but limited hands on care. VERY, VERY POOR chair side manners by case manager & social worker. Case manager & social worker was more concerned with paperwork. SOCIAL WORKER SHOWED UP ONLY ONCE & GAVE ADVICE AT INAPPROPRIATE TIME. The case manager gave very little hands on care. Let's start with how they brought a hospital bed with bed bugs into my parents house. While my mom was on her death bed she was being devoured by bed bugs. We had to call them to get the bed out of the house! This is how they treated their patient. I would go with Hospice Hawaii. The RN was good but their equipment was bad. They were never on time with the supplies. The guy who brought the oxygen tank dropped it off and left without giving instructions. I had to call him back to explain how to use the darn thing. A persons passing should be as painless and as comfortable as possible. This was like a nightmare and now my dad has to hire an exterminator to rid the bed bugs their equipment brought to their house. read more

In April of 2018 I was informed that my husband would need to be admitted to hospice care. Every single kind of emotion ran through my head and wasn't sure of what the future would bring. I asked for recommendations from my husbands oncologist office along with my family members who are all RN's, off of them said Islands Hospice was the best and decided to give them a try. I can say hands down that choosing Islands Hospice was the greatest decision I had to make through this whole journey. Every staff member that came to the house to assist my husband was nothing short of stellar. Our nurse Rowena, CNA Carey and social worker Karen made their weekly visits and you could see the comfort in my husbands eyes that he fully trusted them to care for him in his final days. I would highly recommend Islands Hospice for end of life care without a doubt. read more

My mother died November 22nd 2015, due to complications of ovarian cancer, but I feel that her flu with secondary respiratory infection was not taken serious by Island Hospice; and she died earlier because I depended on them to prescribe instead of just taking her to her regular doctor. The hospital referred me and Islands met with me IMMEDIATELY. I got in contact with two other places, but went with Islands when I was traumatized by a more known hospice organization's many pages of intake forms. When you are under an extreme amount of stress, the last thing you want is pages after pages of contract and being told they would put a lien on your house if you couldn't pay for hospice rate room and board, which is *NOT* covered by Tricare or Medicare. Every single person, from intake SW/RN Daryle Ann and SW Stephanie to the regular nurse Sheila and Harold, who was the last to be there, was wonderful to work with; they are highly experienced and true professionals. read more

Most of what there is to say has been said in other reviews, but: Islands hospice was the angel in disguise to help ease the passing of my tutu late last year. We had set up hospice care only the day before she lost consciousness and some member of the staff was there to help every day for the next week or so until she passed. Particular mention to our Social Worker Rachel, and nurse Nikki, who went above and beyond with warm caring to provide ample comfort medication and care. Who'd've thunk I'd be reviewing hospice care on yelp, but I needed some way to recognize them publicly, and as a broke graduate student I can't donate. While we were able to pay for care, and they were great in helping us figure out the medicare/medicaid transition, they are also a non-profit organization who helps those in need with hospice care. read more

Where do you want me to start: 1. They were instructed to use Polident to clean his dentures. I found his false teeth soaking in just a glass of cold water. 2. Used toothpick flossers were put back into the container with the clean ones. 3. Feces was not cleaned thoroughly from his buttocks. 4. They were instructed to place a water glass, eyeglasses, and hat at arms length. These items are normally reachable for him at home(and every other facility he's been in). 5. A patient's respirator in an adjoining room was unusually loud as to where he was unable to sleep. 6. Menu consisted of pizza, and sandwiches for dinner. This is hardly a balanced meal, and the menu written didn't reflect what they were actually served. 7. They missed a lot of spots shaving his face including the cheeks, chin, upper lip, and neck. When I visited him the evening of his discharge, his beard was at least 2 days growth. I asked them to shave him every other day. They can take instructions on how to care for their patients from Hospice Maui. I do not recommend them. read more

We brought my 94yo mother in law home for here last days. RN Jessica compassion and professionalism was terrific. She educated my wife and I on what to expect in the coming days. Islands Hospice has been amazing. My words cannot begin to explain what they have done to help our family to take care of my grandmother. Nurse: Our nurse is Christine and she has gone above and beyond to help us care for my grandmother. She is part of our family and cares for my grandmother as her own. She answers my mom's calls for help or questions. She is always positive, loving, kind, considerate, patient, and genuine. She is there for my grandmother but also is there for our family to help however she can. She is a blessing. CNAs: We have had many CNAs and every single one has been great with my grandmother. They bathe her and talk with her on their visits. We have especially appreciated Geraldine and Annie and Shryl who visited often and brought us supplies. All of the CNAs have been professional and kind. Our social worker and the chaplain have also been great supports for our family and my grandmother. For my grandmother's birthday, Islands Hospice sent her a bouquet of flowers. It was a surprise which made her feel special and happy. It shows how genuine the company is. read more

Islands Hospice helped me to care for and keep my grandma comfortable at home for 6 months until she passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on January 14th 2015. I am truly grateful for all of the love and support my family and I received. I couldn't even imagine life without my grandma after living with her and my grandpa for most of my life. Focusing on her wishes and quality of life made the experience of seeing her fade away and being able to let her go so much more bearable. Of course when my grandpa began to get weaker and more ill, Islands Hospice again was my savior. Sadly, grandpa declined faster than expected, only on hospice for 2 weeks before passing away June 29th 2017. Again, I am forever grateful to Islands Hospice for transporting my grandpa home so quickly; ensuring that he too would pass away peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones. Every one of the nurses & nurse aides who cared for my grandparents showed so much compassion and dedication. I am truly blessed to have had my grandparents take care of me since I was a baby and truly honored I was able to care for them till the end. Thanks be to God!!! read more

My family called Islands Hospice and immediately got scheduled to meet with a consultant in the next 1 1/2 hours. Shawn handled himself in a vey professional manner and went up and beyond our expectations. They provided everything we needed to help my dad get comfortable through his ordeal. The 2 nurses (Dale and Elizabeth) were quick to respond to our every need available to them and did so in a timely manner. The staff at Islands Hospice was very professional and treated our family with the up most respect. I would recommend them anyone that needs the services they provide. read more

My father recently completed 90 days in Islands Hospice - Supportive Care Program while he battled esophageal cancer. He has now transitioned to Islands Hospice. Our family was very pleased with the wonderful service we received. It was incredible. We had a nurse, nurse practitioner, social worker, and CNA come to the house. With my father being elderly and weak, it was so nice to have the care come to us. Everyone was wonderful. We had a lot of issues that required troubleshooting (my father was on a feeding tube). In particular, Almer, Harold, and April were exemplary. They always found the answers we needed and they help guide us along on some challenging days. We are so grateful for them. The doctor, Dr. V., was also very responsive. When a family is in the midst of an emotionally trying time, it is such a gift to have found a program with such professional and compassionate individuals. If you have the option to utilize Islands' Supportive Care Program, you will be in good hands. read more

Such excellent medical and humane care was given to our daughter. Their explanations were concise when applying medical care. They patiently listened and responded to any issues or concerns and allowed us to make informed decisions. They assisted with the completion of required forms; which were insurmountable at the time. Most importantly, we never felt alone. We were comforted by the staff during our daughter's last hours and supported when she passed. My Dad passed last month while under the care of Islands Hospice. I cannot say enough good things about our experience with the nurses and caregivers of Islands Hospice. Hospice nurse Maria Sheriff was great! She handled every situation with my Dad in a loving, caring and professional manner. Yet, she was able to handle his sometimes wise remarks and humor in a way that made everyone laugh - including my Dad. She was compassionate and considerate of what my Dad was going through and also what we were going through. The weekend before my Dad passed, Maria was on vacation - she made sure he had everything he needed before taking time off. Unfortunately, the weekend was really bad for my Dad and we had to call Maria several times for advice and she was always available. If she didn't answer when I called, she called me right back. My Dad was in hospice care for only two or three weeks before passing but every interaction we had with Islands Hospice was a positive one. I hope you never need to call on their services - but if you do, I would highly recommend Islands Hospice. And, if you get nurse Maria Sheriff, your loved one will be in good hands! I wish I could invite every one of our Islands Hospice team over for Thanksgiving, but in the alternative, I thought I'd write about how unbelievably grateful I am for the care they provided my Father for the three months prior to his recent death on October 31st. Our nurse, Leslie Wilder, was so caring and loving towards Dad; the two of them bonded and became friends. I could not believe how much heart Leslie put towards caring for Dad, especially knowing that she had other patients to care for every day. Our aid Jana was wonderful and consistent and always smiling. The night and weekend nurses were amazing, especially Danielle, who I will always remember talking me through and helping Dad be calm and comfortable during late night visits. Every nurse that came through our door was helpful, kind, considerate, professional and experienced. I won't list them all because I know I'll forget someone. What a gift to feel a sense of calm and relief just from hearing a knock and knowing someone from Islands Hospice was on the other side of the door. Even the men and women at the call center were responsive and patient. I will honestly be forever grateful to Islands Hospice and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Islands Hospice has given my dad great care. My dad recently passed 2 weeks ago but I'm confident to say that he was treated well by the nurses they assigned him with. And I'm happy it's nurses who are also filipino too, which it was easier for my dad to communicate with them. I took care of my dad while everyone in my family had to work. It wasn't easy but they've helped me with my questions and concerns, which gave me confidence over time. Yes it sucks that they could only come in once or twice a week and they're off on holidays but usually at their shift hours a text/call for any emergency, they're here to help me. After shift hours though, I have to call the main office. And thankfully my dad had good insurance, which gave him concurrent care, he was able to go ER if he wants if they won't be here quick enough. Ordering supplies and medication for my dad wasn't a hassle, they've provided everything for him. They also offer to have Chaplin to come by to have a little chat, say a short prayer, and at one time they played a guitar for my dad. Social workers are sometimes busy but they're understanding and are willing to help. I had Nurse Case Manager Sheila, Chaplin John, and Social Worker Kirk. They've provided nothing but support and care, I can never thank them enough. My family and I are grateful! read more

Although contemplating and arranging hospice is heart wrenching, Islands Hospice made it that much easier by being awesome. My grandma was in a rehab facility and getting worse. I called Islands Hospice and they made an appointment to come out that day. We had her home by the end of the week. From the initial intake to the weekly CNA and RN visits they have been great. Little did I know, I would need their assistance within days of my research, and when the doctor said so, they were ready to move forward for my father's care quickly. Lack of coordination in getting patient home from hospital...equipment shipped to wrong place, lack of sufficient pain meds at discharge, unsatisfactory pain management during home and in-patient hospice care. Refused to start patient on needed PCA pain management regimen when needed. To be fair, some of the nurses and nursing assistants were helpful and attentive, but we did not trust all of them. We did not trust the nurse practitioner or medical director for appropriate comfort care. If your loved one has major pain issues, it is advisable that you consider another hospice provider. read more

I cannot say enough about Islands Hospice. My family and I were trying to decide on what to do and we were referred by the 3rd social worker from the hospital. Thank goodness for her, she introduced us to Myra O. And we are very thankful. She put our minds at ease knowing that my mother's last moments were taken care of. Our family was scared, and we didn't think that we could take care of mom and keep her comfortable, but we wanted to honor my mother's request to come home. Myra helped from the moment we met , helping with information to ordering the bed, supplies and taking care of transportation from Queens west home. The afternoon my mom came home, everything was ready for her (except the table and I texted Myra and they had it delivered the next morning). The nurse came a bit later, Kamalu was so nice, knowledgeable and compassionate in regards to our family's needs. She wrote everything down at my mother's request and stayed to answer all of our questions. She made us comfortable with being with my mom outside of the hospital setting. The next day Rovena came by and was also compassionate, and knowledgeable. She also answered all of our questions and helped us through this difficult time. When mom passed, Rovena was there to assist us, she allowed mom to pass with dignity. She prepared her for the mortuary and continued to answer our questions. She also asked if we were ok, and referred us to the social worker. The social worker also came within 15 min to assist us with the next steps. Kokua Medical came and picked the bed and other equipment up all within the same afternoon. I cannot express how much my family and I appreciate Islands Hospice. BTW, my mother also had two dogs and they are assisting with finding them homes. They are compassionate and understanding. With both the living and the deceased. Much aloha to you all. read more

If they are dedicated to their patients and families as they state in their website, maybe they can explain why it took 5 callls and 5 hrs to return our calls. The only responsible person was a nurse that came over to visit our father, but she was not able to answer our questions or make a determination in our case. I wil be cancelling their service. read more

Absolute first rate organization. They helped us with papa. Very helpful and thorough. With everything from setting up the house to the very end. The person that brought out the bed said the most heart warming prayer before he left. The absolute best. The nurses that assisted us were an absolute godsend and showed us the utmost compassion. Even the team that picked up our loved one were very compassionate. And showed the utmost respect. In a time like this we are very thankful to have used such a great group of people.
