This is quite a deviation from my usual food review, but I wanted to share my experience with Bristol Hospice Hawaii and their care for my father-in-law who passed just hours before writing this review. When I was looking for a hospice provider, I was discouraged that there weren't more online reviews to help my family make such an important decision. With that said, I hope this will help someone. For those TLDR folks, let me just sum it up by saying that Bristol Hospice Hawaii is the real deal. They partner with you from Day 1 until that final day to provide your loved one with quality, comforting care. Look no further and call Bristol Hospice Hawaii. Read on for more detail. My aging father-in-law was in decline, and as things worsened one of his doctors recommended looking into hospice care for him. With a list of hospice providers in-hand, I went to work researching each one online. As I previously mentioned, online reviews were few and then there's the process of gleaning the helpful reviews from those that were written at an obviously highly emotional time that might be unfair to the provider. We had the list narrowed down to just two which included Bristol Hospice. We began asking friends, family and co-workers if they knew anything about these providers and on 2 occasions Bristol Hospice was mentioned as being top-notch. From the moment we made first contact with Bristol to enroll my father-in-law for hospice care, to the moment that he passed, the entire staff at Bristol Hospice provided excellent, professional, and caring service. If we needed a nurse to come to the house due to a change in my father-in-law's condition they were there within the hour regardless of the time of day or day of the week. We could call in with questions at anytime, and we were never made to feel that our question or concern was unfounded or a waste of their time. Orders for comfort medications, equipment and supplies were quickly filled. Hospice personnel were always on-time with scheduled in-house visits to provide care or just to follow-up. We truly felt they were a partner with us during our family member's final weeks. I can without reservation HIGHLY recommend Bristol Hospice to anyone considering this level of care for their loved one. read more

This will be a long review, in hopes that I truly aide someone in their decision making process. Just recently my step father passed away, we had chosen Bristol because like so many of you who will be/are searching want to feel the sincerity and promise the hospice service will provide. From, the beginning Dustin was very nice and helpful. Definitely, there to answer all the right questions. The approach was very gentle, concerning and well placed. He informed me that Bristol was the largest hospice service on island. Which appeased to me and my family bc our frame of thought was the more support my step father would recieve. You would get supplies right away and they would go over the amount of care visits relatively soon. He seemed confident and sincere that Bristol would be able to meet our needs. So, naturally we decided to go with them. Transportation from hospital to home went smoothly. We transported on a Thursday( please pay attention to the days during the week moving forward). We met with our intake nurse who provided us with one bag of changing pads, pre opened gloves, one package of wipes, and one package of chux pads. Nothing else. This is where you have to pay attention bc now we are coming into the weekend. My step father was not mobile and did not have sensation so diapers were required. We ran through the limited supplies they gave us and quickly had to request more, however it was the weekend now and we were told we would not meet our scheduled nurse until Monday and regular supply ordering would take place then. We paid some out of pocket bc we were unable to get another delivery until 24hrs after a call was made. My step father had to urgent situations where he was struggling to breath, this also happened to fall on a Friday. We were told the team would be available 24/7 we would have to just call the number. The first incident which happened on a Friday, difficulty breathing took almost 3hrs for someone to come. The second incident happened on a Sunday, my mother placed the call at 9am, at 11am a nurse called to say they would be there at 2pm. I flew from California that same Sunday morning and managed to arrive before the nurse who did not come at 245pm. My steo dad was in distress. You will never meet with the hospice doctor who is assigned to your team. The nurse visits are scheduled for an 1hr at minimum, there are there for maybe 20mins. The nurse aide who takes care of hygiene is in charge of their own schedule. So even if you want them to break up there daya say you want Monday and Friday, they can say NO that doesn't work. They will always say they have other patients but remember Bristol is the largest hospice company in Oahu. The nurse aide could only come on Wednesday and Friday. So essentially my step dad would have at least a 5 day interval between visits None of your actual hospice team is available on the weekends. I could go on and I could even provide receipts of all I am saying but this is all already. I am going to end this very long review, just to say please don't get blinded by the smiles and kind words of a business. Please, please also do your research and truly see if this is the best fit for you. I would not recommend Bristol to anyone. Bristol seems to be the fast food of hospice care. I didn't know what hospice was until I took my mom to the doctor when she wasn't doing well back in August 2018. Shortly after the doctor's visit, my mother and Auntie were both referred to and qualified for care with Bristol hospice. Immediately the next morning we were contacted by Bristol hospice and a caseworker was sent out the same day and hours after that they were both approved for hospice care. The next morning, Hospital bed, supplies and meds arrived and later that same morning a nurse came to check on my mother and auntie. My auntie passed away just a few days later very comfortably in quietly in her home at age 93. The social worker Tim, referred mom to kalakaua Gardens for skilled nursing care. She seemed to do better because she was grieving after her sister's passing but soon it was a possibility that she might graduate out of hospice care because she was doing so well. After about 4 months of amazing hospice care, mom passed away on December 28th, 2018 at age 90. I was so new at all of this when my step mother was put into a nursing facility. She was then transferred to hospice. My care home lady highly suggested I use Bristol. Another Hospice was recommended to me by the nursing facility but my care home lady said Bristol is the best! They give lots of supplies for the patient so the care homes don't need to ask the families for supplies. The staff is soo awesome that they make you feel like they've known you for years. So here's the thing.... management gave wrong information.... saying that I couldn't have my dad seen by his doctor for anything.... come to find out.... that info was inaccurate as a result.... there was a huge delay in him receiving proper medical care (were still waiting). First visit... there was no briefing on my father's condition, or how to help him until the first cna or rn visit. The nurses that provide support have been great. read more

Mom was with Bristol hospice, care was good, except when Mom got tested for Covid 19 and was positive. Being that mom could not swallow pills, and the Pfizer pills could not be crushed, I elected to take Mom off hospice care to receive the IV Covid antivirial at ER and urgent care, 4 IVs total. Mom had a fever of 102.2 and 104.2 fever on the day we took Mom to get the IV antiviral. Right after the treatment by Kaiser Er and Urgent care, mom was readmitted back to Bristol hospice. That day I was lectured by Shaun a nurse practitioner about the purpose of hospice. It was clearly over the top and was not a wanted scolding by a nurse who clearly way out line. I told shaun of the reason for taking mom to er, IV Covid antivirial, which was something that Bristol could not and would not do, but only give comfort medicine only. I compllained to carol Middleton, since I had her phone number. She said was busy admitting new patients into Bristol. But would she forward the complaint to Chris, a supervisor of Shaun. Chris called me and we discussed the incident, but she agreed with Shaun, to lecture me about hospice care purposes. I did not yell or harass, or swear at her at all. We talked and respected each other. I hung up, and texted carol again, saying I was not happy with the results of Chris' conversation. Then she told Tamara, to call me, and we spoke. Nothing really came out this complaint, no results of what happened to Shaun. The few days, passed and social worker for Bristol came to my house and wanted to speak to me, I let her in. She asked what the complaint was about and I told her, and she understood the reasons for taking Mom to get IV antiviral for Covid. Iguess they had a meeting about me and made a contact for behavior standards for me. The meeting was closing down, and she asked to have me sign her iPad, and I asked what am I signing for. Jamie, then said we have a contract that we need to have you sign and agree to. "I told Jamie, don't you think I should read it before I sign the agreement?" knowing something was weird, Jamie wanted me to sign it before reading it. I know this is unethical and Jamie should known better. I think she was just trying hide it and make me sign it without reading it and without giving me a copy. Totally wrong, know now to never trust a social worker. I spoke to Tamara, supervisor and told her of the incident, nothing was done. Tamara told me to quit texting the employees if I had a question. No person, was mention on who to contact if it had a question. Carol Middleton told me to call or text our case manager, so I did today, asking Maricel to talk to Tamara and tell her I wanted a written apology from Shaun and Jamie. Maricel asked how mom was, and I answered, she is fine. She said she was going to call Tamara for my request. Tamara called me back and said I was texting Maricel more than 6 times, and I said, I did because she did not answer her phone. Tamara said to me you just violated the contract we made now your Mom is discharged from Bristol hospice. DO NOT choose Bristol hospice, their Staff are unreasonable, I supposed to get a phone call from Tricia Pancer, operations manager, but I doubt that will ever come. Tamara Benson just jumped the gun after talking to me on the phone, and discharged my Mom from Bristol Hospice with out getting my side of the story. I was told by Carol Middleton to contact, Maricel our case manager if I needed to talk to someone at Bristol. I called Maricel but did not leave a voice mail, but instead texted her 4 times. Bristol hospice employees should go thru some training in order to deal with the public, they are totally clueless on how handle complaints or issues that come up. AVOID Bristol Hospice, if you want to avoid conflicts in your life. read more

My Dad was in Bristol home hospice in 2021-2022. Most of the staff who visited his home seemed very nice and professional but also seemed like they were overbooked, rushed and stressed. This is not ideal for end of life care. Though I realize this is a business, I wish the company would put more priority on the clients and give their staff a lighter load so the work can become a blessing for all at the sacred time of dying. I've seen this way firsthand when I was a hospice volunteer back in the '80s. read more

The staff is clueless of drug interactions and give way too many doses back to back. They admitted that some of the drugs should not be given to dementia patients and that sieme of them should not be given together. read more

Excellent, consistent, caring services, quickly responsive to any needs or concerns. Toward the end, included a housekeeper who came in once a week to clean our living spaces and offered kindly support to us. Case manager RN took vital signs and updated us on his status and filled any supplies or medications needed and referred us to any other need she'd observed. She also helped with any direct hands- on need she observed (changed Depends, adjusted wheelchair). CNAs were cheery and upbeat as well as efficient. When my husband was near the end,Bristol offered other support and took care of everything (called Mortuary and Willed Body UH Program) needed, and shaved and dressed him/ I received several follow up calls after his death to check on my status and any other needs I might have.Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I felt we did everything we could for his comfort. read more

My grandma just passed away about a month ago. We had at home hospice care. We had the weekend nurse name JR & week day nurse named Carol (Caroline). They both were so great! We cannot express the absolute beyond of care, support & love we received from Carol. She was with us every inch of the way, every call she was there. She was able to guide us throughly with everything that we were instructed to do. If we had to contact Bristol hospice personally their front staff were also great! Bristol hospice using Kokua medical supply gave me equipment that continually malfunctioned, oxygen, suction, E tanks regulators. Due to multiple malfunctions my husband a patient of Bristol hospice suffered from aspiration pneumonia, a heart attack, and a anoxic brain injury. Failure to supply necessary medications, wound care supplies, incontinence supplies, and nutrition . Also bringing sick people into my home during the coronavirus making him sick with flu or cold symptoms preventing us to go to other hospice. When I complained hospice made a false allegation to state APS . Then discharged my husband without providing essential medications and equipment notifying us three hours before their intended discharge because they could not manage pain, emesis, and wound care. DO NOT PUT YOUR LOVED ONES IN THEIR LACK OF CARE. If I could put zero I would. read more

Learning about hospice care is obviously not something you want or look forward to, but at some point, may become necessary. After being hospitalized for weeks and with doctor's saying there's nothing more they can do, we made the decision to transfer my dad to hospice care. He wanted to be home so we opted for home hospice. From the initial intake, to transport, to set up at home, Bristol was amazing! Before discharge, Bristol arranged for the hospital bed, supplies, oxygen, and other equipment to be delivered to my dad's house so that when he arrived, everything was already there and ready for him. I was afraid of the transport from the hospital to his house because my dad was on a very high level of oxygen and we weren't sure if he would make it with the transport oxygen. But the transport was smooth and the transport guy put us completely at ease saying not to worry and he was right. Once home, his assigned nurse came weekly to check on him and they provided supplies and medication as needed/available for him so that he was as comfortable as could be. He remained at home in hospice care for about three weeks and then passed peacefully. Upon passing, Bristol again stepped right in and was there within the hour, and Chaplain Clive was amazing and so comforting. Grateful for Bristol Hospice during this time. read more

Bristol Hospice Hawaii took charge and stepped right in during a time that was unknown, scary and confusing for us. We appreciated their quick attention and constant communication. Everyone we talked to were respectful, caring, and helpful. Always in communication were our RN nurses Chris and Aja. Especially helpful during this pandemic time and very strict Hawaii State quarantine, was our Bristol social worker Rachel. My brother and I had to fly out at a moment's notice and while fully vaccinated on the mainland, time wise, were unable to get a COVID test pre-flight to Hawaii. That would mean that we were required to have a mandatory 10 day quarantine at home and unable to be with our father during his last moments at the care home. Rachel worked long, hard and past her work hours to help us get an exemption. This all happened while we were on our separate flights to Oahu. By the time we reached our destination, our exemption letters were in our email inboxes! We were so blessed to be by our dad's side before he passed. My mom was placed on home hospice care from Kaiser to Bristol Hospice. The transfer was smooth and the nurses, social workers and transportation services were in constant communication. Kokua Medical set up all the equipment before my mom got home and they were professional and showed us how to use everything. Once my mom got home, Bristol hospice came over and we were assigned an awesome nurse (Tam), social worker (Roxanne), CNA (Michael) and float nurse (Katie). Everyone was professional and answered any questions we had. Thank you Bristol for taking such awesome care of my mom. She passed away comfortably and with family. read more

I cannot express in appropriate vocabulary about the one service which was an on call after hour service provided by Bristol Hospice Nurse on Christmas night. This one RN went late at night to assess and tried to care for my father's urine catheter but she was not equipped with the adequate basic supply and expected the care home to have back up supplies. She needed to look for necessary supplies through her co-worker and the on-call after hours director but no one could provide or drop off to the care home. So then she removed the existing catheter and shoved it back into his genital and caused bleeding. She then left saying she will try to find and come back with the necessary supplies to change the catheter but never returned and she made 911 call for paramedics to take him to ER. She DID NOT return and wait for paramedics to take him to the ER. Protocol is she should have followed to ER or at least wait until they picked him up to brief on what she did. She might have panicked or just did not care because we inconvenienced her on Christmas day. No one from Bristol called me to say they were there or after the service was completed half ass. The caregiver called to tell me what happened soon after nurse left. That nurse told caregiver that she should go to ER with my father. I called and spoke with that nurse and she was giving me excuses and we had a heated conversation. She said there was no point in going to the ER because patient doesn't speak English. I told her my caregiver doesn't either. She should have called me even though I am on the mainland because I am the only next of kin. I put in a complaint to Bristol case manager and Director Dawn. Confirmed that the nurse and the on call director was wrong and did not follow proper protocol due to communication failure or inadequate training. We rely on this Hospice Care to do their services and they get paid well to take care of these patients but just because there are licensed caregivers at the home or facility they should not pass the mess onto someone else even if it was Christmas day. We learned that Bristol did have a talk with that staff,whom I requested not to have for my father's future care, had a previous incident similar to ours and she continues to work for Bristol. I would not want this staff care for any other elderly dying or ill patients. Hawaii is so small and everyone knows somebody, even if HIPAA is in place, families, friends, neighbors, and other patients do talk and words get around in no time. Since that traumatic day, Dawn had assigned another RN to make visits to my dad and she was the best one ever. Called and gave details of what she did and updates on his condition after each visit. Her name is Megan. I commend her for doing what she does. The Social worker and Chaplain of Bristol was also great. That Chaplain has left. My father had passed away two days ago and it was after hours again. This nurse called me to say that she was there and she will be setting up the mortuary to pick up my father. She left before they came to pick him up and that was okay but she or the after hour on call director did not call for the Chaplain to do a prayer. No one from Bristol called me that day to inform me where he was going to be taken to. I had to call around that evening to find out where he was taken to before I could sleep the night. I called and left messages for Bristol management twice and have not received any response because now he is gone. I only received a call of condolences from the Chaplain next day. He was not aware of any request for Chaplain service the morning my father passed. He stated they did have after hours on call chaplain as well but due to COVID or the time of 2 am might have been the set back but they are available as requested and could have gone in with proper mask and have said a prayer. Again failure to communicate. It is with heavy heart the one must leave their parent in a care home and then under hospice care but to have had red flags I worry for the other elderly patients who cannot speak for themselves and the relationships they have with the caregiver/facility where these patients reside. This Bristol Hospice cannot be rated based on one or two incidents because other staff have been great but they need to regroup, communicate, and educate to follow through correctly even under pressure during regular, holidays, after hours schedule. Just keep in mind that these patients could be your family. read more

no one should ever be referred here. i was referred by my doctor in october. i have terminal cancer. stay waiting for bristol to get my records? since october? been in bed for days...no help with food or bathing. nothing. have fallen twice. called them yesterday. one message says they are on their way to my house, another says no one is coming. i was so desperate for help, i called the corporate office. i have reported them to the department of health. they should not be in business. read more

My wife had terminal pancreatic cancer and we selected Bristol because their people were knowledgeable and spoke truthfully on what to expect and the difficulties of coming days. After they were selected they never stopped arriving, and were well organized from the nurses to the chaplains to the social workers to the delivery of hospital beds and equipment. Before she passed they were there with compassion and never ending care, dispensing sound advice to minimize discomfort and pain until the end. They never stopped being there for my family and I have the greatest respect and alofa for the staff - their professionalism and heart were outstanding, and their service was well beyond what we expected. read more
