I initially went for my new puppy's free health check up and ended up paying over $300. They keep adding stuff and I had an impression of this place is all about money. Second time I went, I paid over $300, too. The Dr told me that a flu shot is needed but when I asked my veterinarian friend who goes on group chat site for Hawai'i vets, no cases for a long time. One shot costs $89 + tax and the vet I quickly transferred to only charge half of that price. I would not recommend this place. read more

Dr. Rachel was very kind and helped me understand what my kitty was going through to make the best possible decision for him. I was able to have more time with my boy thanks to Dr. Rachel and I'll always be thankful for that. The office is conveniently located near University and they are still following covid protocols for drop off. You don't go inside with them to be with your pet during the exam, just FYI. They will spend time with you to discuss what's going on when you pick them up, but it definitely feels different. I'm still used to the pre-covid ways of pet visits where you are with your pet during the checkup, but maybe there's a good reason for it now. They also do not take care credit. Hopefully they change that in the future to welcome additional streams of business, but I understand why most don't. read more

I initially found out about Unlce Burt and Rachael through some family friends. They recommended them if I was in the area. It's a family business and when you talk to the vets they treat you like family and make you feel welcomed. My furball unfortunately got into some cheese, parmesan, I think. Anyway, he loved it, but then started pooping in the home, and he is usually very well potty trained. I immediately knew something wasn't right. I made sure he was still eating and drinking, but figured I would call the vet to be safe. They told me to bring him in to get it checked out. When I brought him in, they immediately noticed he was dehydrated and blood draw revealed pancreatitis. He stayed for a day and got some needed IV fluids and medication. When I got my buddy back he was feeling much better and within a couple weeks was back to his playful happy self. Uncle Burt called a number of times to make sure he was doing better. They were there when we needed them and my pup is better, I'm so thankful for the great care and thoughtfulness they provided to me and the pups. read more

This review is about the overall professional conduct of the management and staff at Island Veterinary Care. I preface this review by commenting that I had only ONE visit to Island Veterinary Care for logistical reasons only. Read on: The short story is: I found Island exactly a year ago, back when my former Veterinarian retired. I followed one of his employees and found Island Veterinary Care. My fur baby needed emergency care so I called Island who took me almost immediately. After the tests and examination, I was given the medical regimen and off I went. Since then (and soon after my visit to Island) I found a veterinary clinic in close proximity to my residence. Without any question, Island forwarded my fur baby's xrays (called radiographs I learned) and a copy of the written exam notes to the new veterinary clinic I selected. Now to current day, it appears my current veterinarian or their staff did NOT keep the files, especially the radiographs. I called Island Veterinary who once again went out of their way to find the notes to my fur baby and is in the process of emailing it directly to me. Is that professional service and courtesy or what??? Kudos to Island Veterinary Care for making my life so easy. Dr. Rachel Lau was my frenchie's primary veterinarian when we were in Hawaii. We miss her. She set the bar so high that we have hard time finding a new Veterinarian here in Ventura, California. My frenchie got sick that I had to rush her to an ER Vet here. I had an injured animal I caught at a local park and called them for assistance. They told me they were not accepting new patients. I explained the situation. They gave me a phone number which of course was an answering service. Total bullshit. I had no choice but to take the animal back to the park were i found t and let it go. It broke my heart and I was late to work. My chihuahua mix suddenly was paralyzed from IVDD and I was told by the emergency vet that he would most likely never walk again and surgery to try fix the disc would be upwards of $9,000. They even recommended that it may be best to put him down. I was referred to Dr. Bert Lau who ultimately gave my dog another chance with conservative treatment. Within a short amount of time, my dog went from being unable to feel in his hind legs to now running and moving around freely. My wife also love Dr. Bert Lau. They are both very accommodating, very smart, the way they respond to our inquiries are just beyond expectations. Sometimes i feel bad that we had to bother them even on the weekends or midnight but they respond and help us tremendously. Arya has been recently sick and we had to take her to an emergency vet clinic. We weren't satisfied with the care as well as how they explain things. We immediately transferred her the next day under Dr. Lau's care. Dr. Bert and Dr. Rachael are very straight forward and not the type of Veterinarians that beat around the bush and tries to get the most money out of you. We are always satisfied with the care and services. My wife and I are both very particular as we are both in the healthcare industry as well. I almost think they didn't care and was just doing labs every month for the money. Island Vet Care took care of my pets for over 10 years. In April 2020 I developed a serious health problem and had to fly out to one of the cutting edge cancer centers on the mainland. I called the clinic to make arrangements for boarding my pets. The receptionist told me they didn't want to see me right after my return. They wanted me to add 14 days of pet care after my return to the island. I agreed. We made an appointment to drop off my pets at 2:30 PM on the promised day. The Office manager Cxxxx called me at 11:58 AM on the scheduled drop off day. She changed the terms and conditions all the sudden. There were many days available to discuss this subject. I had less than 3 hours before the scheduled drop off of my pets. Cxxxx said her new estimate for 24 days would be more than $6000.00 and demanded me to pay $3000.00 in cash advance. She said fresh produce I would provide for pets would not last for 24 days. They needed to purchase new ones. Are fresh produce made in gold at Island Vet? In 2019 I spent about $6000.00 with Island Veterinary Clinic for boarding my pets. I made 3 trips to the mainland for health reasons. I didn't have much time or opportunity to find new care givers. I was in the rock and a hard place. I went to the bank and withdrew money. I drove straight to one of my friends house. They offered to help me. My pets were cared at the comfort of their own home. They refused to accept any monetary compensations. In my Living Trust I made in 2013, my pets will take the first pick of my estate at my death. I named people to take care and to find new homes for pets. My animals inherit $100,000 or 1/3 of my assets to meet their expenses until they die. In 2019 I provided the estate attorney's contact number and explained this set up to Island Vet. Corona virus brings out the worst of people and the best of people. Our dog, Bella, has been receiving care from both Dr. Lau and Dr. Rachael for over two years. She first came in with a known dermatitis, and we were treating the symptoms. However, Dr. Rachael suggested allergy testing to get to the root of the problem. We are now administering weekly allergy shots to Bella, who is free from her bumpy skin and red paws. Both Dr. Rachael and Dr. Lau are extremely knowledgeable and their bedside manner is second to none. They both take the time to explain exactly what they are prescribing and what the lab results mean. Additionally, they do their very best to stay on time with their appointments. Having worked in this field before, I know how hard it is to keep appointments running on schedule and their quality of care makes it worth waiting a few minutes. The front staff of IVC is also top notch. They always will call to remind about appointments and are thorough in their review of all of the procedures and labs done to make sure no errors are made. Additionally, all of the technicians are highly trained, and understand subtle movements and animal cues. Shih tzu has been their patient for some time now and they have never failed to provide him the best care possible. Both Dr. Burt Lau and Dr. Racheal Lau are fantastic. They really seem to care about our pets and our very knowledgeable. Our 6 year old dog was lame in the back left leg for three years. We took her to German vets who could not diagnose the issue and then to Texas A&M university who after several specialty visits and over $10,000 still said they needed more tests and they probably would not be able to diagnose the issue ever. While looking for a specialty clinic here on Oahu we decided to try laser and acupuncture therapy. After one visit and with the records we already had done Dr Lau diagnosed the issue and helped us through the surgery and now is completing the rehab. For the first time in over three years at pet can run, play and stand up with out pain. I would have never believed this could happen. The whole team there is fantastic and you really should take your pets there. read more

First of all. If you're poor, maybe you shouldn't own a pet if you really care about giving him/her the best in veterinary care. Second of all, the reason why this place isn't as busy as somewhere like Blue Cross is because they take the time and effort to treat your pet like their own and really dig deep to find the problems and to solve them. Therefore taking more time to see each pet therefore having less time to see MANY pets. Duh. What you'll end up getting is an experience in true quality incomparable to any other places. (i.e. Blue Cross, VCA, Aina Haina Pet, etc.) I have been to three vet clinics so far for my dog and this one by far has the highest quality of care I have seen. Dr. Bert is up to date with all types of meds as well as even cancer research. Colorado State is one of the BEST universities to get a veterinary education and that is where he got his. Yes, this place is expensive but it's because they take more care than ever to make sure you pet is not in pain. This is something that a lot of other places neglect and assume that since it's just an animal, it's okay. If you don't want more aggressive pain treatments or comfort treatments for your pet, leave. That's your own pet's comfort and treatment in jeopardy and it's your own fault. If you don't feel like your animal should be treated just as well as any human client, then take them to cheaper, dirtier places. The blame is on you as the owner to pay the price for treatment and if you can't afford it, then opt for lesser care. That just shows your own lack of financial responsibility as a pet owner. All in all, this is the best vet on the island and besides going to this vet, I would rather take my pet to a mainland clinic because all of the other vet clinics on the island just do not have the resources. read more

I came here with my two dogs per recommendation by my friend and boy am I happy that I chose this place out of all the other vets. This place is a little pricier than the other places for routine check ups and vaccines but it's definitely worth it. Dr Lau is very knowledgable and helpful and was there for me the whole time I was freaking out when one of my dog's broke into my care package full of CANDY. He takes emergency after hours calls for his clients and ran me step by step on what to do and to post him with updates throughout the weekend. He isn't required to but he did and that's dedication. No. But I don't shop around for my own medical care based on price. I think my animals deserve to have the quality of care that Dr. Lau provides. He has on more than one occasion saved the life of her pets and added years, yes I said years to the lives of these family companions. There are reminder systems in place and just in general the communication is excellent. Our furbaby, Ululani 'Ulu' recently became paralyzed in her back legs. We went to a few veterinary clinics then got referred to Island Veterinary Care. At the point that we found them, we thought she was not going to make it. Chris returned my call, requested all of the records from the different clinics, had Dr. Bertram Lau review all of her records, came to the house (yes, they do house calls!), he examined Ulu and told me 'I think we can help her!'. He took her back to the clinic with him (along with his assistant Julie) and they did everything they could to help her and to get her pain under control. Even when he and Dr. Rachael Lau determined that her condition was dire, they maintained her pain, kept her on her medications, did physical therapy, acupuncture and laser treatment until we brought her home for a few hours then Dr. Rachael and Julie came to the house where she could take her last breath in her home and in her bed at the front door window where she loved to wait for us to come home and watch the world go by. This place is great! They as so good with our dogs. Whenever something comes up they are so accomodating to fit us into the busy schedule and they have taken excellent care of all of our dogs. They have even met us on weekends when they are closed for emergencies and offer to come to our house when our dog was too sick to get into the car, my mom is small and couldn't lift the big dog. I would recommend them to anyone. They are easy to work with and make you feel comfortable and are always looking out for the best interest of our pets. In terms of costs, it doesn't seem any different than any other vet. In fact, they are always participating in various humane society programs to offer us discounts for having our dogs fixed or mico-chipped. read more

Well Dr. Lau contacted me - so I was hopeful - There was a reason I had this fresh in my memory, I had just adopted a tiny kitten and Dr. Lau had done the Neutering - she had problems can't I touch her belly - I think she was way too young to be neutered all of 2 lbs, but she was feral and it's a great service to fix the feral population. I was just so surprised that some kitten so tiny could be fixed and so sore for so long. I wrote my first review and he wrote back- Yes he cares! I told him my story, he didn't respond :( I guess since my cat died in 2006 it does not matter - the fact that I still miss her and the way I lost her. Finally 8 years later I may have found a replacement kitten and I hope she will someday be OK with belly rubs. read more

My dog was recently bitten by another dog. It happened at night (of course!) and Dr. Lau was available by phone, talked us through everything and gave us our options. With his help, we got everything stable and decided to bring her in the next day. Dr Lau was great, as well as the tech Chris. They were gentle, explained everything clearly, and were very understanding. We are now resting comfortably and although it was not a fun situation, we made it! I am shocked by the good reviews for this place - it is clear from my personal experience, testimony I've heard from others, and the one star reviews for this business, that this place does NOT care about the pets and only care about the $$$ in their pockets. My mom & I took our eight year old German Shepard in because of limping and a skin condition. He insisted on doing surgery just to get a diagnosis, but when pressed for the possible outcomes, he could only offer tendinitis as an example! He wouldn't tell us any other possible conditions they may find but insisted he needed to do it to find out what condition it is...? He quoted us $2000 just for the anesthesia. And I'm sure he would have insisted on more surgery after the initial "diagnosis" one. My best friend took her new puppy here to get the initial shots needed for puppies. He quoted her $300 for each shot, 3x more than what is standard! Other reviews assert that his higher prices are worth it, but I do not think this is true. Why would you need to bump up the price of standard shots? If you cared about the animals, you'd be happy to help at the regular price. Overall this place is just trying to exploit people's deep emotional attachments to their pets to gain themselves a pretty penny! read more
