Good food, great staff, nothing better than a good meal after a long ride! The people and this island are worth the trip!

Oh, Mary! Definitely get the signature dish at Mary's Bistro: the crispy chicken tenders. It's a…read morelotta beige on one plate -- breaded chicken tenders, fries and coleslaw -- but sometimes you need to embrace a monochromatic meal every now and then. The chicken tenders come with a creamy mustard sauce (also beige) that is delicious all by itself. The chicken fried chicken is also great, and comes with a bacon-corn gravy smothered on top. The chicken fried chicken is served with mashed potatoes and green beans. It's a comforting dish. They have a small kids menu at Mary's: a cheeseburger, chicken nuggets, grilled cheese and mac & cheese. All of the kids entrees come with fries, except the mac & cheese. One of my children ordered the kids' mac & cheese, and I'm happy to say that the mac & cheese is house-made, and not Kraft mac & cheese. I like when a restaurant makes an effort to make their own mac & cheese for kids! The location is great -- right on the beach, with patio seating. We visited during the fall, on a chilly day, so we sat inside, but we still had a nice view of the beach. After we ate, we were steps away from the sand. It was nice to enjoy a tasty meal and then watch the sun set from the beach that was right there.

It started off great then slowly went downhill. We were seated immediately by the window which gave…read moreus a wonderful view of the deck and waters. The server was really nice and took our order but we didn't see her again until later when we were done with the food. No checking in so we weren't able to ask for things like extra sauce or another set of silverware. In terms of food everything was a little off. The mushroom pizza was too lemon forward. Maybe they should use truffle oil instead of lemon. The Nashville chicken sandwich was dry and ended up being tough/overly fried. For the entrees we had to pay $5 to add fries to our sandwiches, which I think becomes overpriced for what you get. The truffle fries didn't really have any truffle flavor. The only saving grace was the grilled cheese sandwich with caramelized onions. Overall, the "bistro" didn't really live up to the name. Felt more like a dark bar with a country theme and a nice view of the waters.

The main issue was that we were really hungry, having spent hours waiting on auto repair. The brisket tacos did not satisfy but to alleviate hunger. The flour tortillas were what my sister called 'raw'. They were not heated at all. The brisket meat was lukewarm warm. The cabbage slaw was raw. There was a dab of chunky plastic jar salsa already placed in the middle of each taco. Chips and salsa: the salsa was in a very small plastic thimble. We couldn't even fit a chip into the salsa. The best part about our dinner: the server asked if everything was good. I told her that it was definitely not my favorite EVER. The wonderful thing about this was that she asked me to explain. She did not show an animosity and was truly inquisitive about our dislike of the food. She said that she would tell 'him'. I am assuming that 'he' would be the cook. I appreciated her concern because the bill was about $40 and when my sister can't finish her meal that's a problem. It was about 430 and I hadn't eaten all day so I did finish mine but I couldn't say that I was not pleased with it. Although nothing was spoiled and it certainly could've been worse. I don't know if I could trust going back. I think that they could do a real light marinade on the cabbage to soften it a bit and if they fried the tortillas and maybe offered corn or tortilla in the beginning, it would be an improvement. Or how about if the salsa so called and in such a tiny vessel, it wasn't tasteless but clearly store-bought. Any restaurant should be able to do something with this information. I don't mean to be negative or demeaning, but I do intend to given an honest review based on my impression. Good luck Breakers. I was actually very happy to see that something was open during this flooding season. Unfortunately, I would've driven 50 miles further to have a better dinner.

I had done a bit of research the day before .. looking for restaurants in the area. When I noticed that the Side Door had Prime Rib on special, (Wed-Sat) the decision was made. DISCLAIMER: I had eaten at the Side Door a few years ago (Cilantro Lime Shrimp W/Pasta) Me and my neighbor arrived at about 4:45PM, and were greeted with a warm smile and seated immediately ... we were kinda early for the dinner rush so there was plenty of available seating. (NOTE: When we departed about an hour after we arrived, the place was FULL and a line was forming for a table.) We both ordered the 14oz Black Angus Prime Rib (10oz also available). About the same time that we finished the first beer, dinner was served! Simply one of ... if not Thee best, PR that I have had in several years, across 11 states. My neighbor agreed. Both of us now try to plan our Petoskey trips to coincide with dinner at the Door My ONLY complaint is that the horseradish was weak. Actually, it seemed that it had been washed into submission .. totally without any flavor or "bite". The rest of the meal made up for it. (But I *will* bring some nose-incinerating, sinus-creating horseradish from home on the next planned trip.) Service: Superb. We never had to ask for anything. Drinks were refilled with perfect timing. And always smiling. She is an asset to the establishment. Driving Suggestion: Depending on the season and the time of day, if arriving from the North, it can be nearly impossible to make the left turn into the Side Door. Suggestion: Turn Right into the strip mall (KFC, AT&T, etc) and use the traffic light near the gas station to turn left, back onto the highway then a right into the Side Door Saloon for some of the best dining in the Petoskey area. Ample Parking is available. YMMV

I just wanted a little (big) glass of red wine and something sweet to cap off the night, and I left satisfied. Key lime pie was the special dessert of the day, so that's what I got. I can't pass up a special dessert that's here today, but might be gone tomorrow. The kitchen didn't just give me a slice of pie: They dusted my plate with powdered sugar in the shape of a horse! It's these little touches that make all the difference, and you can tell that they're not horsing around here. (Or maybe they are?) My glass of Cabernet was great, and I was told that the beer was great, too. They were very busy, considering it was the end of the season. Nevertheless, we got a seat right away, and the service was great. If you visit Seabiscuit Cafe during the evening, you'll see that it's a cozy little spot with dim lighting, where you can relax and have a meal (or just drinks and dessert, like me).
