If visiting Catalina Island for the first time, or if it has been a while since being on the island, a golf cart rental is a good way to get a sense of the island. Island Rentals is the first golf cart rental company as you exit the dock. It's $70 for the first hour and $60/hour pro-rated after the first hour. Cash only, with a deposit of $130. They reimburse you for time not used after the first hour. Golf carts are available on a first come/first serve basis. They seem to have a good supply of carts. We checked in at 8:55am and when we returned at 10am, all carts were checked out and people were waiting for carts to return. I don't think it would be a long wait once all carts are gone considering a steady flow of returning carts. The recommended route takes 1 hour and factors in quick stops for views and pictures. It does not factor in stopping to hike up to Wrigley Memorial, shopping, for a bite to eat. Save other stuff to do for after you have completed the golf cart route. You will see beautiful views, ride through established neighborhoods, get a glimpse of cliff side homes, take the drive up and back to Wrigley Memorial, pass the entrance to the Zip Line Eco tour, drive through the little town of Avalon. It was our first time on the island, we had a total of 7 families, and we were determined to make it to the F%&king Catalina Wine Mixer baby! We got up early and left the cruise ship as early as possible and were able to book 7 golf carts at about 9am. This location takes cash only, and their golf carts fit a max of 4. (The place up the street took credit card and could fit 6) They had great communication here, and I appreciated the quick explanation on the island's geography with a helpful tourist map. Basically, the main reason to rent a golf cart is to climb the hills and get the amazing panoramic views of the island. If you're hitting up shops and restaurants, that's better on foot. There's a 2-hour max on the rental which was more than enough time to cruise around the island and take in the scenery. We returned our cart in about 1 1/2 hours, got some of our deposit back, and overall it was about $100. Totally worth it!! read more

The staff were great! The ride was smooth and so much fun. We got our choice of golf cart (luck, I think but we were happy about it). It was very comfortable and easy to maneuver. It even had cup holders. We got it for 2 hours and the path they set out for us on the map took us almost exactly that long (with lots of photo stops along the way). I would recommend taking a shorter path or not taking stops if you're trying to get the cart back in 1 hour. Also, they only take cash so come prepared or stop by an ATM first. I would definitely go back here again. It's the same price as the other rental place and it was a much more pleasant experience (we also talked to the other rental company). read more

When we walked up to the booth, I was told that I needed $130.00 cash to rent a golf cart, so I went and pull out $140.00 in cash. I go back and give the person who was helping us the money and all he says is sign and initial the paper that he puts in front of me. Ask me if I have insurance and give him that info. I initial the paperwork, get the keys and drive off with my friends. No mention of time, when the cart needs to be returned or anything else. We needed to get our bags that we had left inside of island rentals utility area, so we stop by and immediately are confronted by the owner. He says that we are 1/2 late and that I need to fork up another $120.00. My imeadate response is WHAT, he ask me if I read the contract, my response NO. He then demands $120.00 for not returning the cart in time. My response is that, the guy who rented us the cart should of let us know that the rental was for two hours. He never mentioned anything. The ow er then starts trying school me on mathematics. I tell him that I am not a child and that I understand math very well. He then ask me if I can read and my response is yes. His comeback is that you should of read the contract. My response is that, it is his employees, responsibility to inform us of the time frame in which the cart needs to be returned. His comeback is that I must be a retard and an idiot. At that point I lose it and go off verbally on this upstanding businesses owner. I tell him that I happen to be a business owner and it is my responsibility to disclose everything to my customers verbly and contractually. He again insults me verbally and it goes down hill from there. This company needs to be UPFRONT ABOUT THE TIME RESTRAINTS AND SHOULD HAVE A SIGN RIGHT OUT FRONT IN BIG RED LETTERS STATING THAT ALL RENTALS NEED TO BE RETURNED IN TWO HOURS. The owner is a complete scum bucket and needs to learn how to deal with customers in a professional manner and not spew garbage from his mouth because he is hard up for more money and to try and screw customers like that. I now completely understand why they do not want a debit or credit card. You can dispute the charge and there shady business practices. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY. Nice place to get ripped off. Brought my cart back a few minutes late, as I was taking cash out to pay the late fee the guy said "forty five dollars". Once he saw I had no change besides the 100 dollar bill he said "what did I say, 75". Then the guy ran with this lie, refused that he'd said 45 dollars earlier. Further more a different guy I rented the cart from at the beginning had said a late return was around 30 or 40 dollars. Utterly lying, cheating, disgusting business practices. It is not cheap, but a big pro is they have built in flexibility so if you finish earlier than the 2 hours you are charged only for the minutes you use. That is customer friendly since time utilized varies from group to group. Carts are continuously coming back so the wait really is not that bad unless you are an impatient puke type. The apparent owner spoke to us while in line and he clearly has developed a system that works. He was very tolerant of people with silly questions including one entitled male customer who clearly wanted to throw COIN at the situation to jump the line. The owner politely responded with the translation being --"nawe kid". We clocked in about 75 minutes for the wife and I to get into the upper levels of the hills and view the casino, harbor/cove and other landmarks of the island. The views are excellent with nice housing on display as well as ziplines etc. Bear in mind when luxury cruise boats are docked at the harbor you will have more competition for golf carts. On Saturday there was a Disney cruise liner and on Sunday there was a Princess cruise liner. The same applies to all the tours you "hopefully" booked in advance. ;) read more

CASH Only Catalina is such a beautiful island with so much to offer but visitors are not allowed to drive cars in the Island. There's no Uber or Lyft service. The island is small enough that when we inquired about renting golf carts we were told that we can drive around the entire city of Avalon in about an hour. Rentals start at $60 per hour and we can rent it for up to 2 hours so, $120 (deposit or 2nd hour). Limit 4 people per car (no exception) and seatbelts must be worn at all times. They accept cash only, deposits are required. We were provided a map and we went on our merry way. We followed the arrows for scenic drive (this is recommended route). We saw amazing sites of the harbor, ocean, and the city below from different parts of the island, making stops for photos. Speed limit is 15 mph. We were able to finish our little adventure in a little over an hour and we returned our golf cart at the same location. We were reimbursed most of our deposit. The staff were friendly and informative covering all rules, dos and don'ts. This was a fun experience and hubby enjoyed driving the golf cart. Review #2966 read more

It was a lot of fun! You need cash for your deposit and the maps are pretty easy to follow. We got messed up a little bit just following the guides but usually pretty quickly course corrected. Carts are not as new as those of Catalina Golf Cart down the street. They also pro rate the cost based on how long you take the cart out. Think they jipped us $5 because we took the car out at 8:50am and returned at 10:18 am, which is 88 minutes but they only gave us $27 back when we should have gotten $32 back. Best to go early as possible, or you will be in a long line because there are only two people checking everyone in. You need a driver's license. The carts are not new, so keep your expectations low. During our trip to Catalina Island, we decided to explore the island and rented a golf cart. The process was quick and efficient. The staff were friendly and explained the rental process, essentially paying for the 1st hour ($60) and paying a deposit for the 2nd hour ($60) for a total of $120. It was only cash. They provided us with a map with a highlighted path and noting various attractions. The golf cart was clean and had no troubles driving around the island. It was a great and efficient way to see most of Catalina Island. We spent about 90 minutes with the cart. When we returned the cart, they refunded the remaining portion of the 2nd hour. Alex pictured in one of the photos was a great help in guiding us with usage of our vehicle and directions for the island. This is the first establishment right off the boats where you can rent golf carts. They accept CASH ONLY. $60 per hour - OPT FOR THE 2 HOUR ride, to truly enjoy island and take pictures! (We brought our own speaker and that made the experience that much more enjoyable) Plenty of Picturesque moments along the drive, you pass by residential areas, botanical gardens, ziplining, and more. (Check our Map picture) Max Speed is 13 miles per hour. Along the drive up to the Botanical Gardens, there is a restaurant called "sand trap," they have happy hour 2-6 with tacos and drinks. With our 2 hour ride we were able to enjoy those as well. I HIGHLY suggest you purchase the 2 HR rental. If you gas it and don't stop for pics you get around the island with in an hour to and hour 15, but it's much more enjoyable to cruise and really take everything in. read more

The going rate seems to be $50/hour from every golf cart rental vendor...except Island Rentals will give you a free 3rd hour if you pay for two hours...yes please! Gas is included! Without stopping you could explore the entire town of Avalon in about an hour, but we made some fun stops at Wriggly, enjoyed some lovely views, and got lunch along the way. I think the 3rd free hour is rarely utilized by most tourists, but we had a fun time and kept the golf cart for 2 hours, 55 minutes, and 44 seconds. read more

Alex at Catalina Last time I went to Catalina Island when I was under 10 years old. I decided to go again after decades had passed. Renting a golf cart for a self tour is a must. I checked out Island Rental golf carts and had a decent experience. I got a little lost and went over an hour ride. Alex, is very accommodating and refunded my full $60 deposit. The staffs seems friendly and nice. Easy to talk too. I am not sure if it is the same staffs every week. I like how they support veterans and give them discounts. If I plan to come back again, I will definitely rent a golf cart at this place. I like how it's a 2 minutes walk from the boat drop off. This was a really great experience. We rented a 4 person golf cart one weekday afternoon and had a good time exploring Avalon. Service was very friendly and they didn't nickel and dime you. I'd highly recommend this spot for golf cart rentals in Avalon. It's also very conveniently located near the ferry drop-off point. My recommendation would be to rent the golf cart slightly earlier in the day. We rented it at 2PM and the sun was glaring in our faces quite often, but also reflecting off the plastic/acrylic cover in the front and making it a bit harder to see.
