Had a great breakfast experience at the Island Lava Java. We walked up to see what the wait time was like and we got lucky that a group had just cancelled their reservation so they took us right in. The service was excellent. Our waitress took care of us and was very friendly and funny. We sat in the upper balcony so we had good views of the ocean and surroundings. There is plenty of space for big groups upstairs. The food we ordered all looked great and tasted even better. I got the loco moco and it was very filling and delectable. We also ordered the ham and cheese croissant, and the burger with sweet potato fries. All excellent choices.
We had breakfast at Island Lava Java and the location alone makes it worth visiting. It's right across from the ocean, the views are beautiful, and we even got to see dolphins while we were eating, which made the experience extra special. I had the island style pancakes and they were delicious. The coconut syrup was the perfect addition, and the Portuguese sausage was also really good. My husband had the luau scramble, which was alright but felt like it was missing a little something. My brother in law ordered the loco moco and really enjoyed it. Overall, we had a nice breakfast and would definitely go back.
We came here twice. Once for breakfast and once at lunchtime. The restaurant has a beautiful ocean view. If you are able to get a table up front, you will have an unobstructed view of the Pacific ocean. Sometimes you might even be able to see some whales or a school of dolphins if you go during the right season. Our first visit was during lunch. It was around the time they were turning over their menu from breakfast/brunch to lunch and we were told that menu items would be limited or we could wait 10 more minutes while they complete the transition in the kitchen. We decided to share a pizza which was one of the no waiting option and the ahi bites. The Kona combo pizza had pepperoni, Italian sausage, olives and onions. It was large enough for the two of us to get full. The ahi bites were excellent. We had to wait for 10 more minutes to get them but they were worth the wait. The house wasibi aoili and umagi glaze were so flavorful and definitely elevated the taste of the ahi nuggets. Service was quick and friendly. Our server checked on us often enough to make sure we had drinks and that the food were delivered to our table. Our breakfast visit was the following day. Unfortunately, service was slower and our waitress was not very attentive. My husband ordered the island bagel and lox and I had the drag it through the garden croissant breakfast sandwich. While the food was good, the overall visit was like night and day from our previous experience. I'm still glad we came for breakfast though as the place does have a lot of great options as far as food went.
Stopped by for breakfast because it was across the street from our resort. Terri our server was so sweet and helpful. Never kept us waiting. We started with the French press Kona coffee which was complex and delicious. My wife loved her fresh catch Benedict I had the lava java breakfast and it was fantastic. Waffle was a little chewy was the only critique. Will definitely be coming back.
This morning was already a bit stressful because we couldn't decide where to eat, and in the end we chose this place because of the many reviews. Unfortunately, it ended up being disappointing. We ordered a vegetable omelet to share and two drinks, and the total was almost $70, which felt very overpriced for what we got. The portions were small and the food itself was nothing special. It definitely wasn't exquisite or memorable in any way. The view, however, was beautiful. We were seated on the second floor with an ocean view, and that part was truly lovely. But even with the scenery, the experience didn't feel worth the money. My husband's coffee also wasn't good at all. The waitress was polite, but the service was quite slow. Overall, the location and view are the best things about this place. Sadly, the food, drinks, and value didn't live up to the hype, and we left feeling frustrated.
We have been coming to Island Lava Java for many years now . We had a server Named Eileen who was so so sweet and attentive! Greeted us with a smile , even offered us to sign up on the app for rewards, which we had been 3 x already this visit and nobody else offered sadly ! Bagel & Lox are delicious, nice portions of Salmon , bloody Mary's are so good! Kalua pork, pineapple and eggs good also . We have never had a bad experience here , Tany is another server who is so nice and always smiling. We will miss the ocean waves and sunshine ! See you next year !
This place was recommended to us by locals so we knew we had to check it out. The view was stunning, you could see the ocean and people swimming. It was also fun to people watch as lots of shops are nearby so there are a lot of people walking around. We got the omelette, pancakes, and the eggs Benedict. The food was delicious, would order all of it again. Great ingredients, everything immaculately cooked, and generous portions. My favorite dish was the pancakes. They had a creamy sauce on top that really complimented the macadamia nuts and the bananas. It was sweet, ward, cozy and crunchy. My husband really liked his omelette, it was flavorful and perfectly cooked. The eggs Benedict was amazing because it came on a croissant which was just so extra in the nest way. The service was excellent. Servers were kind, attentive and knowledgable. I would definitely recommend this spot for a solid breakfast with a stunning view.
We had an amazing time Makamae was such a character and made our dinner so memorable. She really did a great balance of lightly offering things that helped me make a decision throughout the evening to keep the experience progressing without coming off as pushy. I felt like I could take as much time as I needed, but that she had good insight into the menu. So much fun so much good food highly highly recommend the poki and beet salad and the pono mai tais!!!
Love the outdoor porch vibe by the shore. Had a relaxing time enjoying an amazing meal with the views and sea breeze. Got to try the luau scramble and the pineapple upside down French toast. Both were unique fusion dishes that made for a fun brunch. The luau scramble uses a fried, crispy pork belly instead of bacon for protein. It's a nice thick cut with good flavor to it paired with rice and scrambled eggs. Worth trying! The pineapple upside down french toast was decadent! It really fuses the pineapple flavors into the french toast really well for a good excuse to do dessert for brunch!
So we got to Kona and I have been trying to eat healthy. That meant I needed my coffee fix. Luckily, Island Lava Java was right down the street from the condo. After working out at Planet Fitness, stopped in for a Cafe Mocha (organic espresso, chocolate syrup, steamed milk & house whipped cream). Definitely worth the visit and can't beat the views.
Huge portions! Tasted great! Tried a pancake island style which meant macadamia nuts, banana, and their unique coconut syrup. I loved it, it was so filling and delicious. Also tried their garden omelette which was fresh and packed with veggies. The potatoes were a hit, perfectly seasoned and crispy!
[pre-covid review] months after my hawaii trip, i'm still thinking about this place! their brunch was DELICIOUS. i got their macadamia pancakes with a kona coffee and it was hands down, the best i've ever had. it's definitely a little pricey for brunch, but we were sat right across the water, so it was a great view! the servers were so sweet and helpful. if i ever return to the island, i will definitely be checking this place out again! read more

Hoku Croissant Sandwich - 2/5 Squished flat. What's the point of using a croissant if you are going to squish it flat like a piece of white bread??? It was small and dull (only made edible by the bacon I stole from my wife's pancakes) Island Style Pancakes or Waffle 1/5 Pancakes tasted like uncooked flour. Coconut syrup was thick and bland. Looked and tasted like a mix of flower and water. Mimosas 4/5 - at least they pour a bottle of alcohol Service 1/5 - seems like they use a roaming system... or our server just didn't give an f Wow the food and service was bad. We were a party of four with a one year old. Quickly seated and got a high chair right away. Service was very timely and the food was delicious!! Of course the view was amazing. Stopped by on a whim on a busy weekend night. We chose to sit at the bar to avoid the wait and were served by the fantastic bartender Brett. He made drinks so quickly and even put on a little show ala Tom Cruise in Cocktail. The drinks were a little on the sweet side, though the hibiscus margarita with Li Hing Mui powder rim was exceptional. We had the Big Island pizza - so savory and cheesy! A definite winner with fresh pineapple too. We also tried the Niçoise salad. This was a little less impressive as the kitchen was out of green beans, but no one mentioned that when we ordered or when the food came out. The ahi was perfectly seared and I liked the light dressing, but overall it was a little underwhelming. The location is great if you're staying on Ali'i Drive plus you can catch the sunset from the patio with your drinks. read more

Overall the experience was good. Definitely a good spot to eat and grab a drink and maybe get a good view for breakfast. There just wasnt a "wow" factor. The service was good. The hostess at first prompted us to use QR code to order food and drinks in and someone would bring them out. Then randomly someone came over to confirm our drinks and ask us if we want to add food. So that was kind of different. I got a mango mai tai which was very refreshing and good balance of strong with flavor. I got the eggs Benedict with extra crispy potatoes. The croissant base was a game changer and is a big reason I would visit again. The crispy potatoes seemed normal, so i would be curious what extra crispy would do to them. My fiance got a basic waffle, egg whites, bacon. Bacon was good and waffle was good. Some of her egg whites came out sort of jiggly which she isn't a fan of. (I ate them) she also got a bloody Mary and liked it. Mentioned it had good flavor and a nice balance of goodies on top and the drink itself. read more

Want to have a nice dinner watching the sunset as you hear the waves crashing against the shore? For a relaxing meal that won't break the bank, come to Island Lava Java. For dinner, we had the fish tacos and a salad with grilled chicken and brown and jasmine rice. Fish tacos (as well as other fish options) are at market price depending on what is offered seasonally. The blackened ono (wahoo) fish tacos with a chipotle aioli served on taro tortilla and topped with a mango salsa with so filing. The sweet potato fries were a nice addition as were the brown and jasmine rices. My sister loves their breakfasts. Don't miss their large cinnamon rolls. My friend and I decided to spend the day exploring this neck of the woods. We had actually gone to the Lava Java in Waikoloa Village for our breakfast yesterday, and enjoyed it so much, that we had seriously considered going back there again....till I googled the place for directions, and to my surprise, found another Lava Java in Kailua Kona......so definitely off we went to try it out. This location and ambiance is quite different from the one at Waikoloa Village.....this one is located right across the road from the beach so you'll get great sea views.....but perhaps a bit noisier because of the road being right out front. Both locations have that similar beachy island vibe to them. Parking seemed pretty easy and plentiful at the back of the building, but it looked like there was a 2hr limit in the lot we ended up at. There was a bit of a crowd when we arrived...at least at the ground level....so we were led upstairs to the second floor and was given a nice table by the balcony rail which overlooked the street below and had expansive views of the sea beyond......nice! The first thing I noticed the menu was a bit different from the Waikoloa Village location, but perhaps this was because it was a Sunday Brunch menu only. Regardless, they did have the Island Pancakes we really wanted again, but no omelettes.......no roasted veggie omelette on the menu, which was a bit disappointing. So instead, we ordered the Big Kahuna Breakfast with the Fresh Island Fish (or Grilled NY Steak)....with 2 eggs any style (my friend chose sunny side up), Portuguese Sausage (or Applewood Smoked Bacon), Rustic Potatoes (or brown rice), and a cup of seasonal fruit. The island fish and eggs was also really yummy!......the fish was so fresh and perfectly cooked......I was expecting something overcooked and dry, but was pleasantly surprised. The "Go Island Style" pancakes were similar to the Waikoloa Village location in that there was sliced bananas and island-grown macadamia nuts on top of the buttermilk pancakes.....and served with portuguese sausage (or applewood smoked bacon), coconut syrup and fresh fruit. However, the pancakes here were smaller in size, not as thick, but still fluffy and tasted good.....especially with some mmm mmm good coconut syrup, sliced bananas, and the flavor and texture of macadamia nuts made it all taste just oh so good!.....and all very nicely presented too. Service was a bit slow, but our server was still very friendly and attentive.....patience and learning to live by slow island time is a must. As for the food, my friend and I agree that the Waikoloa Village location is much better.....especially the island pancakes!....but if you happen to be in the Kailua Kona area, then this place will definitely do. read more

Just leaving Lava Java about 15 mins ago. I ordered a single Belgian waffle w/ whip cream & strawberries. I also ordered the grass-fed burger w/ avacado slices, cheese, and bacon. (This don't come w/ the burger. You have to add-it on). The food was great! Our server was so sweet & very attentive. Loved the outside seating but the only thing was that our table didn't have an umbrella. So 3 of our people were sitting in the sun. That's why I gave it a 4. Also the middle high top table was uncomfortable. It's not really meant for short or chubby people because you can't scoot your chair. But other than that, I loved the ocean view! FOOD: 3/5 The food and drink is pretty good. I had the Luau Omelette, which has cheese, onions, pineapple, and kalua pork in it. The egg consistently was a bit chewy on the omelette, which I wasn't a huge fan of. It came with a choice of meat and starch--I chose crispy bacon and crispy potatoes. I did enjoy those. I got a mocha to drink, which was okay. I don't think it was stirred, though, because my first sips did not taste like a mocha, but it got sweeter and sweeter as I went. LOCATION: 3.5 I think it is nearby several hotels in Kona, and right on the water. It was a gorgeous day when we went, so I could snap a picture. It's hard to find the right place to park, though. I do think it's pretty packed in the area with a lot of cars and tourists. This obstructs the view a bit. SERVICE: 3/5 The service was okay. We didn't get water refills, but our server would ask if we'd like more water, we'd reply "yes", and they'd never come back. I think the QR code menus are a plus, though. There was live music from PonchoMan Kuanoni, which was the highlight of our dining experience! read more

From their Roasted Veggie Bowl to their pizzas to their Macadamia Nut Crusted Fresh Catch, I go to Island Lava Java for the food most certainly, the view and atmosphere absolutely, however... it's the service that completes the experience for me. Everyone is great, and then there's Mark, who is the absolute BEST! He magically creates a comfortable connection at the table with people of all ages. People really enjoy him. He is a friendly, witty asset to Island Lava Java and the kind of exceptional server that other restaurants try to steal for their own customers. Don't cheat yourself out of a wonderful time, definitely put Island Lava Java on your "must dine" list! Oh and grab a Hibiscus Mimosa while you're there; they're so good! read more

We stopped in with a group of 6 and all left full and happy. We walked up and had a little bit of a wait. We were seated outside with a lovely view. Our server was nice and patient with us as we figured out the ordering system. One tip, order at the same time if you want your food to be served at the same time. Some were more prepared to order than others. Their food came out very quickly while some of us were still ordering. On to the food! I had a delicious (and beautiful) pomegranate mimosa ($5 on Mondays) and a yummy waffle. It is possible to mess up waffles, and I'm happy to say Java Java got it right! If you're deciding between Java Java and Papa Kona, we went to both and I recommend Java Java. Enjoy! read more

This is the first place I chose to go after my mandatory quarantine, and I chose a winner. I called to make sure spaces were open at the bar and even the hostess was so friendly and polite! When I arrived, the bar seats were properly socially distanced and the bartender wore his mask the entire time, properly wiped down all menus and cleaned and sanitized everything. The restaurant is literally across the street from the ocean, so you can see the sunset and hear the waves while you dine. They have a large bar surrounded by individual tables, and it's all open with umbrellas and shade, perfect for the weather here. There is also a large area for To Go ordering with a coffee bar and pastries. Now onto the good stuff. I started with a Lilikoi Lemonade, which was amazing. It was a bit on the sweeter side, but I like sweet, even so, I got a double my second time and that made it even better. Highly recommend that. They have a great happy hour, but their cocktail menu is amazing. I think it was 3:30-6. I had never been here before, but wanted everything from the fresh catch of the day section, and while I waited for my dining partner to arrive, the bartender recommended the calamari, which is cut into thick strips, which is my absolute favorite!! It was awesome, can't wait to go back for that!! I got the fish & chips, which was good, maybe a tiny bit dry, but still very lovely presentation and huge portions. Excellent fries. My partner got the fish tacos which were beautifully done- purple tortillas and mango salsa, gigantic portions of ono, sweet potato fries (you can choose what you want). The people next to us ordered the macadamia nut crusted fish and that looked amazing too- guess I'll just have to come back and try it!! Darn. Just around 6 PM, a gentleman began playing live music, very nice island music with what I believe was a ukulele (don't quote me!) He was great, not too loud so you couldn't carry on a conversation. Happy Hour Chicken Tacos and $6 MaiTai is a good value. Blue corn tortillas, peppered chicken, with slaw and chipotle sauce have the right amount of crunch, spice and tanginess. The HH ribs are tasty but portions are very small. Friendly and attentive service. read more

Perfect lunch/brunch spot after a morning of snorkeling with dolphins! Our table had an amazing view of the oceans and we spotted some dolphins from where we sat. You can order everything from your smartphone after scanning the QR code so service was prompt. Servers were present in case you had something specific you wanted to note about your order - allergies etc. We came super hungry and the portions were perfect for our starving bellies. We ordered the poke bowl which was a good mix of ingredients and fish and the almond crusted fresh catch, both solid choices. My boyfriend especially loved the fresh catch with beurre blanc sauce! He's French and said the sauce was the best he's tasted - hence licked it clean off the plate. Finished with a smoothie and an espresso. Overall, great experience. Would definitely come back to this spot when visiting Kona again! read more

What a gem of a brunch spot was this! The food, the view everything is great, better than what you would get in mainland .. the roasted veggie omlette deity pesto was the cherry on the cake, the flavors worked so well together, am probably sad I won't probably get to it anytime soon. We tried this place last year and decided to go back. Last year I got the luau omelette. It was nice and flavorful but it was a lot of food! This year I went with a basic pancake breakfast. The pancakes are incredible and so fluffy! I ended up only eating half a pancake and was so full. The staff is always really friendly and ordering on your phone is nice and easy. It can get pretty packed but there is usually bar seating available. read more

Must do breakfast spot. Parking is limited, so plan on a bit of a walk if you have to drive to get here. Very friendly servers. Make your reservation at least a few days ahead via Open Table. I made my reservation five days ahead. This is Hawaii: plan your trip and make reservations in advance for food and activities, and you will limit disappointment and waiting. FYI: Sunday is brunch menu only (so no "drag it through the garden" on Sunday) read more

Fish and chips if you're on vacation. If you are leaning healthy, the Lava Java salad with the grilled shrimp. The goat cheese on that salad is fantastic!
Can you get lunch all day? For example, we would like to come for breakfast, but also pick up sandwiches to have at the beach later that day.
The entire lunch menu is NOT available all day. However, they do offer a brunch menu that includes some lunch items.

No. Breakfast is served until 11:00 and then they switch to their lunch menu.
I am looking for a place to host a small wedding reception dinner in September. I would like it to be outside with an amazing view of the water. Ideas?
