UPDATE - AUGUST 2024 - My wife and I have continued to give business to Island Cho (with in-person visits and take-out orders) a number of times since our first visit and review. We continued to give them glowing reviews and recommend them to a number of our friends and colleagues. Last week, my wife's family was visiting us from out-of-town. We wanted to take them all out for a nice dinner and thought that we would surprise them with a visit to Island Cho. We really hyped up the restaurant to them and told them that they would love the food. We arrived a little bit before 6:00pm. We were seated right away and there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant. After we had all looked over the menu, our orders were taken. So far, nothing unusual. Our drinks/water were not delivered to the table soon after we ordered. We thought this was a little unusual and that perhaps they would be brought out when the food came out. The drinks arrived to our table about a half hour after we ordered, but the food did not follow. We noticed another family came in and were seated around this time. After a short while, they looked visibly upset and got up and left with no explanation. My two young children were very hungry and we were doing our best to keep them occupied. My wife's family asked us if the food normally takes this long, to which we replied, "No, it's very unusual." Nearly an hour after we ordered, the owner/server brought the "Caribbean Wings" (one of our favorite appetizers) to the table. We thought that the rest of the food would be coming shortly after, but before we knew it the wings were gone and we were waiting once again. At this point we debated just paying for the drinks/wings and leaving, but then we would have to find a new restaurant to wait at. We decided to just cut our losses and continue waiting. We also attempted to ask someone how much longer the wait would be, but no one was even at the front counter anymore. Approximately an hour and a half after ordering, the owner returned and said that the rest of the food would be brought out in "five minutes". We brought up that we had two young children who were very hungry and asked why the wait was so long. He informed us that there was only one person working in the kitchen and then he sped away. The owner eventually returned with the food, but only two plates. It was another 5-10 minutes before any other plates were brought out. My wife told the owner, "We're still waiting for my older son's meal and you still haven't brought out the Shrimp Wontons that we ordered." The owner informed us that the aforementioned wontons would not be coming out because they were out of them. My wife asked why we weren't informed of that when we first ordered them. He replied, "We didn't realize until we were about to make them." My poor son sadly kept on saying, "Where's my plate? Where's mine? I'm so hungry." He eventually received his food, but at this point he was so tired that he couldn't even finish it. We decided to just cut our losses, finish the food that was brought out to us, and then settle the bill. The whole experience was well over two hours and we were leaving well past our sons' bedtimes. My wife and I took our sons out to the car while my sister-in-law settled the bill for us. When she came out, she told us that the owners informed her that none of their kitchen workers showed up due to bad communication, etc. She also said that they didn't exactly apologize for our poor experience but rather gave a long list of excuses. My wife and I were SO EMBARRASSED for hyping up Island Cho to our family. We realize that the restaurant industry is not an easy one and that problems arise at the drop of a hat. That being said, we feel that the owners of Island Cho handled this bad situation VERY POORLY. The least that they could have done was give us a heads up when we first arrived. "Hey, we're very sorry but we are short-staffed tonight. You can stay if you wish but it's going to be a long wait," or , "We're very sorry but due to unforeseen circumstances we're unable to accommodate your party." Nope, we received no warning at all. They deducted the items that we didn't receive, but there was no apology or any sort of discount for our poor experience. Although the food was just as delicious as it had been on previous experiences, it was just a little bit too little and too late. After getting home, we found that several patrons have shared similar experiences to ours over the past six months or so and voiced them on both Yelp and Google. We don't see how Island Cho can continue as a business much longer if this sort of bad service and bad management persists. Although we love supporting local businesses (especially family-owned), we cannot in good conscience continue to recommend and support Island Cho. We will NOT be returning again. read more

Food timing and quality need help. I absolutely love Carribean cuisine. I used to have a friend, many years ago, that was a chef. He made fantastic curry goat and great jerk chicken. When I saw the goat on the menu I had to have it. I'll honestly admit that the goat was delicious, as was the baked mac and cheese. The let down was the 55 minutes it took to get my food and the fact that the peas and rice were severely undercooked. They were actually inedible. I am only giving a * because I have to. The experience on Mother's day was horrible. We waited for at least 1hour and half for food to reach our table of 4, including a 3yr old baby. And the orders arrived with long periods in between. There was another family seated when we sat down and clearly they were frustrated just as we were. The food was not authentic and not good. The jamaican red snapper escovieched was fried so hard that the fork could not penetrate. This was poorly done and not the way escovieched is done. The trini dish was awful to say the least. The queisidilla was a poor excuse and they were all misrepresented to the cultures to which they truly belong. The owners should go back to what they did before. If you want to be served something that you didn't order then met with an indignant attitude that you don't want to sit and waste your life away while they correct their mistake this is the spot for you. Went to this place after a movie with my girls today and I was utterly disappointed. I saw a TikTok review and they hyped it up so much. But we got there at about 3pm on a Monday and it was completely empty. We were greeted by a young lady, who was friendly, but spoke very softly. We gave our drink order and food orders. I ordered the jerk chicken and asked if the chicken had sauce (personally don't like sauce bc that's not authentic jerk) she said yes and confirmed but was a mixture of bbq and hot sauce. I also wanted told her I was going to place a to-go order. One cousin ordered the curry shrimp and Rasta pasta. One cousin ordered the curry goat roti. My sister ordered 2 things to go. By 4pm all the food hadn't come out only the curry goat/roti. Then the Rasta pasta, then the jerk chicken. The To-go order hadn't come out by 4:30 and my sister had to leave without her food (we brung it to her). But it turns out that's when we learned you could only pay cash or cash app. Once the food got there it was completely disappointing. The jerk chicken was old and dry and had no flavor or jerk rub whatsoever. The peas and rice had all of 11 beans in it and had no flavor and the cabbage was blah. I tried to nibble a piece of chicken but it was too dry. The Rasta pasta was weird. It tasted like sweet Alfredo and had no spice whatsoever. The goat was just ok. When I inquired about the delay, a waitress nonchalantly promised a 5 to 10-minute wait. After another intolerable half hour, frustrated, my party and I left to dine elsewhere. I strongly advise against dining here. The music is excessively loud, the air fresheners overwhelmingly strong, and the general atmosphere is one of dissatisfaction among the patrons. People were visibly agitated, waiting to order, receive their food, or even pay for their meals. Even for takeout, you'd be wise to order at least 2 hours in advance (or 2 days). Should the owner respond to this review, I would appreciate a clear explanation as to why my party and I were left waiting for our meals over two hours past our reservation time. I've never had Caribbean food before and I was so excited to see this restaurant pop up a mile from my home. My boyfriend and I walked in and were greeted by a lovely family. Initially, we were planning to dine in, but they were not open to dine in for another week or so. Regardless, they still offered us dine in and reassured us it was okay which was kind. The oxtail had good flavor, although it was not my cup of tea due to the fact it was more fatty than I anticipated, but I won't take a star off because that's my own preference and has nothing to do with the cooks. This past Thursday night, August 29, 2024, we went to dine with family members at Island Cho Caribbean Cuisine restaurant in North Haven. We were looking forward to it since our daughter and family had been there for lunch a few times and had a good experience. We walked in and were immediately greeted and shown to our seats. Handed menus and after a short time our various orders were taken. Interestingly the restaurant was not very busy and there were a lot of empty tables at that time - early evening. Then it began to get very strange. It took two hours to receive our food in a very piecemeal fashion. There was no communication from the wait staff as to how much longer before the food comes out. No apology forthcoming for the inordinate amount of waiting. There was no attempt to placate us, the patrons or more importantly, the two young children with any offers of appetizers due to the long wait for the food. The waiter did say after more than one hour of waiting that most of the restaurant staff failed to show up for work and there is only one person in the kitchen. It would have been helpful to know that upfront and let the customer decide if they wanted to endure the wait or come back another time. Other restaurants tell customers if they're experiencing delays in being served and give an estimate of how long the wait would be. When finally the food was brought to our table after 2 hours- it was tasty but frankly, not worth the exceptionally long wait time. Further, we were shocked that the 4 year old's order was the last one to emerge from the kitchen, after everyone else was done with their meal! Ridiculous in so many ways. No real apology was given and nothing was comped as a courtesy and acknowledgement for the terrible service. Some reviews of this restaurant on Google.com showed that they apparently have had a staffing problem for the past year and there have been other reviews of very long wait times for food to be served. If the restaurant doesn't solve their staffing and communication problems in the near-future, then they will be a forgotten memory on the restaurant scene. This is a shame because we all wanted to support a family run business and appreciate this type of cuisine coming to the North Haven community. I was very excited to try Island Cho Caribbean Cuisine. Being that Caribbean food is limited where I live in Meriden. I heard very good reviews prior to my experience. However, the day I went I was disappointed. I ordered a shrimp burger which on the menu fries and coleslaw is included. When I got home I realized there was only a shrimp burger. The flavor of the actual shrimp burger wasn't horrible but it wasn't the best and the presentation of the food wasn't great. The actual ambiance of the restaurant is nice and clean. The service was quick. I called ahead by time I arrived the wait was less than 5 mins. 1st time there with my wife. We found the traditional Jamaican cuisine to be excellent. I had the Curried Goat was outstanding slow cooked and balanced very well with the curry spice. Rice and peas and steamed cabbage perfect. My wife had the Jerk Salmon. She enjoyed it immensely. Great flavor and a nice kick of Jerk seasoning. But not over powering. Waitstaff was pleasant and attentive. We had a very nice experience and would recommend it highly. read more

This place serves a fusion of West Indian and Jamaican cuisine as the owners are from those parts of the world. No complaints with the taste and quality of food. Tried the shrimp with plantain, jerk chicken, goat curry. Sides included spinach, lentils, Mac n cheese and dahl puri. However it took an hour for the food to arrive. There is a mandatory 20% service charge. There are no curtains for the front windows so if you're there during sunset you'll roast as the a/c can't keep up with the heat. The cash register still has the audacity to ask for a tip after you pay the service charge. Best order takeout. read more
