In A Nutshell: -Wow, Vieques is the type of island to escape! Barely any tourists and the locals are cool as heck. -You can get here by ferry or plane. We took the plane route, which costs alot more ($72 per person/one way) but only takes 25 minutes from San Juan. -We also choose to rent a scooter ($55 for 24 hours) to explore the island. Others rented Jeeps and there are only a few taxis. -You'll see an abundance of wild horses roaming free on the entire island. Such a great environment for them! -There are many beaches you can relax on (Blue Beach, Red Beach, Green Beach and Black Sand Beach). You will also find a ton of smaller beaches and you can take off all your clothes and jump right in! Overall, this is a place that you should visit at least once, especially if you are in Puerto Rico. We plan to come back again!!!!

I fell in love with Puerto Rico. The list of reasons why is long, but near the top of the list? :::::: Vieques, definitely the Isle of Vieques. Whether it was the beautiful white-sanded beaches, the sleepy chill feel of life here, or the feeling of "undiscovery" here, it's not a wonder how this island is love-inspiring. One can travel to this small Island by ferry (from Fajardo), or plane from San Juan. I went with the latter. With the drive to Fajardo, and the ferry's reputation with unreliability, the risks clearly outweighed the slight savings. If you fly, be sure to fly out of Isla Grande (http://www.yelp.com/biz/aeropuerto-isla-grande-san-juan#hrid:h87mID4sjPVukE3iGkbtgg/src:self)---the flights are surprisingly cheap, and the tiny planes start your trip with a sense of adventure. This island is a step back in time. You will not find tons of luxury hotels here (the only one is W on the north shore), but if you search you can find some decent accommodations. No fancy restaurants, but there are certainly some cool options. Nightlife is limited, so you won't have many, if any, salsa dancing options. But you know what? That's alright. Vieques makes up for it with the relaxation it delves in droves....along with killer beaches. Yeah, you have to unplug here, to have a true Vieques experience. Whether you make it here for the world famous bioluminescence bay, or just to discover your own secluded stretch of sand, your heart will thank your feet for taking you here.

Do this tour!!!…read more Very awesome once in a life time experience. We got a guide and met up with a group of six people. We got picked up by Bertha the van (that's what our guide named her). Our ride to the beach was short in the dark unpaved road that was super bumpy. We got to our destination where we would found our canoes. Experience: 5/5 We canoed to the middle of the Bahia in pitch black. Our guide gave us tips and made sure that we all stayed together. He sat with us in the dark for about 20 minutes in the middle of the bay and gave us the whole breakdown on the reason behind the Bioluminescence phenomenon. We saw our boats and paddles and anything that touched that water glow (think Avatar) in the dark! One in a lifetime experience. We shared a Kayak and you have to trust your partner to paddle at your same rhythm which is super difficult at first but gets easier. Unfortunately no pics as you need some high powered camera to be able to capture the beauty of it. We got historic information on the smaller islands off puerto rico and how pirates once habited the islands from our awesome guide. By the way the beach smelled horrible and you have to take your shoes off and walk on the rotting fruit from the mangroves lol super gross. All worth it tho! The Bioluminescence tours is a must! It is one of the few in the world! Tip: your experience will depend on the moon so less moon the darker and easier to see the Bioluminescence waters. If the moon is out it is more difficult to see the Bioluminescence water.

This ranks way up there in the coolness factor and the ooh and ahhh factor…read more When I was told that I had to jump off a boat in the dark and into the ocean I wasn't really all that thrilled. I was already cold and the creepy factor of jumping into black water was not something I looked forward to. But....I took the boat out there and since everyone else was doing it...... Once you're in the water and can see the sparkles and star like creatures light up as you swim or lift your arms out of the water the amazement of it all takes over and I enjoyed swimming for at least an hour. The water was comfortable to swim in and there were several other people swimming with me. Put on a snorkel while you're swimming so you can really see your hands and arms light up or your friends while they swim around you. Tips: 1. Book a tour-we booked with Paradise and they did an great job of getting us out there quickly. For about 30.00 we were fed and boated out and back. 2. Wear a swim suit. (Sounds obvious but several people didn't bring theirs.) 3. Bring a towel 4. You may want to bring a light jacket if you chill easily. The ride out on the boat is windy and it is after dark. 5. Still go if there's rain. It makes for a spectacular show. 6. Try and book when it's NOT a full moon. The more light the less you will see. 7. Bring your snorkel so you can really see what's going on. A not to be missed tour!!!!

From that point on, it doesn't cost you anything unless you choose to spend money. It's a short walk from the parking lot to the beach. We had gotten there early, and decided to rent an umbrella and a pair of lounge chairs, which cost us $35 for the day. Considering we ended up spending nearly 7 hours on the beach, it was definitely worth the purchase price. The beach is gorgeous, and the water is rock free. It did get quite busy, but we actually enjoyed the people watching. There are vendors that walk up and down the beach, selling ice, creams and drinks, but there are also little Kioskos on the property that you can walk to easily to order hot food. At the one we visited, we got delicious slushy's, Pinchos, and empanadillas that were all delicious. We had a great time, and would absolutely go back in a heartbeat! When you leave the gated parking lot, you are literally around the corner from the Luquillo kioskos if you want to hit them up for shopping or dinner after your beach day. Makes things super convenient!

I've been coming to Culebra since I was a kid. It's one of my favorite places. It's a small beach…read moretown where the general vibe is open some days, closed others (tbh, that can be said of most small towns across the globe). This is a place to leave tour worries and stresses behind and relax. There is lots to do and nothing to do, depending on what are looking for. There are several places to stay in or near town, and also removed and secluded. There are a couple of good restaurants, bars, shops, and grocery stores. Most people speak English as well as Spanish. And they are friendly and laid back, so be patient and chill. This is a great place for family vacation, fun with friends, and romantic getaways. I suggest renting a vehicle, jeep or go-cart (not sure they still rent scooters), to be able to get around easier and enjoy the island better. Visit several beaches. They differ. Some are better for relaxing, others for snorkelling/diving, or surfing. If you don't have a boat you can hire a water taxi or charter a private boat to get you to islands like Cayo Luis Peña or Culebrita, OR maybe Dakiti, or any other hard to get to by land places. There are several businesses that offer snorkeling/diving rentals and tours, kayaking, etc... There are two ways to get here: boat or plane. If you don't have a private boat you can take the ferry from Ceiba. It is cheap but may be stressful trying to get a ticket and/or deal with the port authority employees. Flying is faster and less stressful but more expensive. If you fly, I suggest Air Flamenco or Vieques Airlink. They fly out of Isla Grande Airport in San Juan (near the T-Mobile District) or from Ceiba. Ceiba is cheaper and faster but you need a vehicle to drive all the way to Ceiba. I don't recommend flying from SJU. Too stressful, unless you are already in the airport. Cape Air also flies to Culebra, and in any case you can't get a reservation anywhere you can fly with Taxi Aereo. Either choice you make will be worth it in the end... unless fate has damned to have a bad time... in that case there is nothing you can do but order a Bushwacker, Painkiller, or beer and get wasted.
