I have been going here off and on for the past 58 years. I went to pick up a prescription on 12/27/25 and the price was 81 cents. When I said I was using cash, the price went up to 85 cents. I had plenty of pennies but nope, they round up no matter what. I don't think that is very fair business. Others I have gone to knock the price down to the lowest non penny denominator. They do have a very nice "fountain" with delicious limeade and some cool items for those who want to shop there. UPDATE!!! Randi from Irwin's actually called me moments after I posted the review. She explained they did in fact round up when they should have rounded down. Therefore I have changed my stars and am very impressed that they called asap and offered to reimburse the change. During the 60's and 70's I used to enjoy eating at Woolworths or Peoples Drug store. Now I found a place that is just like them. The food is really good and the prices are low. I have tried nearly everything on the breakfast menu and everything was delicious. The staff are very attentive and friendly. Now I eat there at least once a week with a friend. While Cracker Barrel seems to have lost their way, this store remains true to what brought customers there in the first place. read more

Irwins pharmacy is the best little hidden secret in Chesapeake! I've heard about the infamous farmers scramble for years and had not had the chance until the Lord opened a window of opportunity for me to get my stomach filled!!! Just know everything I heard about this meal did not disappoint!!! The eggs, peppers, onions, potatoes, and cheese are what breakfast dreams are made of! This is the coolest place that I just stumbled across while on the way to another destination. It's a pharmacy with penny candy and old fashion games and an actual soda found in the back. Really cool quirky place for a quick stop and a burger. read more

I love to explore the area that I live in and Irwin's Pharmacy & Fountain was one of those explorations. Although not far off the beaten path of I64 it's a section of Chesapeake I have never traipsed through. To be honest if there is reason other than this throwback pharmacy from the 1950's I wouldn't know what it is. The original Irwin's in Portsmouth dates to the 30's and since closed. Keep in mind the business remains a full service pharmacy. The location of Irwin's Pharmacy is a bit, well blah and in a hap hazard development of newer and old businesses. The city is Chesapeake, but it's positioned within a few miles of Virginia Beach and Norfolk. The lot has adequate parking but is not in great shape. However, I saw no debris. The walk in the front door was through the pharmacy. They have side parking for the diner. Either way you can access both. It's small and has a nostalgic feel with modern merchandise. Surprising was the availability of most items a customer would need over the counter and also a decent selection of bottle craft beer with four taps for growler fills. Also the wine area is respectable considering I expected little to nothing. I found everything neat and clean. The restaurant is in the rear. My assumption is that it's changed little. 13 red leather stools line the counter with four matching red leather booths. When they fill up for weekend brunch I hear the waits are long. Restroom is very rear. It's tiny and scary ancient but clean. A coat of fresh paint would be welcomed. From what I saw the dining area was spotless. We picked a booth and our male server had menus. The fare seemed pretty standard and that's just fine. Coffee and waters were brought out and orders taken. My French toast tasted above average. I liked the think cut of toast and sausage tasty. The price could not be beat at $5.50. The restaurant experience to me seemed like a 3.5. Unsure of rounding I decided to go back again for vitamins and a legendary limeade. The service at the pharmacy was prompt and staff smiled. No issue with my card. I also spoke with the woman who worked up front and discussed growler fills. She was helpful. The reason however that I can easily round up is their limeade that many of a review mention. The same young gentleman made it for me and was a fantastic conversationalist. He said no one in our area makes limeade or lemonade like them. Also the shakes and malts he declared are super! I also chatted with the female co-owner who was very sweet and working the counter. Her partner boyfriend works in the pharmacy. I sat at the counter and watched him pull out fresh limes and lemons. He told me the "secret" to their awesome drinks. It's fresh fruit and simple syrup in packed ice. Hmm, that seemed too easy. They offer two sizes, I went small. Not expecting much but anticipating a good drink. I watched him make it which was cool. Wowzers!! I totally get it now. The flavor blew me out the door. This is a must if you go to Irwin's. Irwin's is the kinda place to connect with friends and family from the neighborhood. Such a disappointment.... flashing sign on street says "we have hand sanitizer". I ran in and they wanted $14.99 for a dollar tree regular bottle of sanitizer. Pure price gouging! So very disappointed you've been here all these years and taking advantrage if our community! Shameful! read more

I took two of my boys here to eat on a whim. Found Irwin's on Yelp and thought let's go here! So glad we did. The food was tasty, it didn't break my wallet and the service was great. Everyone was so friendly. There was plenty of food on our plates, plus it was delicious. Another added bonus they have the perfect ice for your sodas . Great compounding pharmacy, family owned, with a delightful old fashioned soda fountain/grill. Turns out they will deliver prescriptions for FREE anywhere in Hampton Roads! I'm disabled and find it difficult to walk. So they will get my prescription from me by meeting me at my car, or will pick it up from my house. Again, for no charge! I love this place and will support them as long as I live in Hampton Roads. read more

This place is a little gem. Neighborhood looks a little rough but don't let that fool you. I stopped by for breakfast and the food and service were fantastic. Try the breakfast club, it's worth it. I found this to be the ideal neighborhood pharmacy. They are friendly helpful pleasant and quick in helping me get what I needed. Their focus is on the customer more than your overcrowded chain pharmacies whose primary goal is to score well for corporate regardless of the wellbeing of the customer. Good word of mouth advertising is far better than the amount of money your chain stores flyers and expensive commercials. This store has the right idea. They have focused on ideal conservative inventory you expect to see at a drug store. They're a friendly family store with a genuine concern for meeting customer need and satisfaction. I will say I'd travel the extra mile to remain a loyal customer. They earned my business. Support local small business. They appreciate it and it shows. read more

Excellent customer service. If you choose to wait for your meds, they will give you a "Free", you reas this right, a "Free," yep, "Free" cup of coffee, or "Free," yep, "Free" cup of any soda, or, pop, or soda pop - however the hell you say it, or your preferred way - while you are waiting. They have a cool mini restaurant that serves burger, dogs, all types of soups and other foods. All made there. Some are better than others. They do need a little better quality control, but not bad considering. One recommendation for Irwins: please buy the restaurant back and manage it the way it used to b If not for the restaurant being under serperate ownership, I would give them a 5 star rating. Took my son here and waited for a notary. As we waited decided to sit and try a late lunch. My son is 5 and walked to the last booth. The waitress blocked the aisle and he said excuse me 3 x she turned looked at him and then proceeded to not move. Strike one. We sit. She sees us sit. We look over the menu for about 10 minutes. My son asking me why they don't come take our order. This is a small diner. 5 booths. I go to the young lady and tell her we'd like to order. No apology just a "I didn't think you were eating but just getting notary stuff". I politely explain that we were going to go ahead and eat. She comes over to our table and rudely asks if we knew what we wanted. It's in her delivery. Every thing she said to me after this point was so absurdly rude as she emphasized kind words sarcastically. As she walked away to put order in she yelled thank YOU very patronizingly. I stopped her and cancelled my order. She was the rudest person I've ever dealt with. I asked her if I offended her and she was like no have I offended you? Absolutely. She gave me the most insincere apology and I was mortified. The staff at the store pharmacy was kind but she is a younger teen or adult that hasn't idea how to treat customers or people with any respect. I will not return. It's unfortunate because the atmosphere was charming. I hope she finds a job shelving books or something bc she has no people skills. read more
