While visiting the UP, we wanted to try a renowned pasty. As a vegetarian, I was a bit nervous they wouldn't have options for me, but Irontown Pasties had both a vegetarian and vegan option, and even had gluten free pasties! We also bought an apple turnover. The service was quick and personable. We took our pasties to go on the road and ate them for lunch a few hours later, and they were still warm as if we had just bought them! The vegetarian pasty wasn't as tasty as I would have hoped, but I went to try something new and was pleased nonetheless. Might not do it again, but glad to get the whole UP experience. read more

The shop is tiny, the staff is super friendly, the frozen mini-pasties are adorable (and tasty) and the pasties are AMAZING! And you can get gravy, too! This place is first-rate, top-notch and all-out fantastic! The variety of pasties is impressive BUT you have to get here early (or at least earlier than I did). The good news is that I'll be back and I will try those elusive (aka sold out) varieties. The best news is that Irontown Pasties is a quick 10-minute drive away; no excuse not to stop by! Weather-permitting, you can sit outside and there's ample parking behind the shop. Whenever I've driven by during business hours, there's been a small crowd. These are so good! I had spicy vegan pasty (our favorite) and he had chicken pot pie. Call an hour ahead for specialty flavors and they will be piping hot and fresh out of the oven. Rumor is...if you go to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, you must try a pasty. I'll admit, the first time I visited Michigan and saw all the "pasties" signs, I thought it was some kind of "adult" store. It was explained to me as being a meat pie and of course, being vegan, I thought nothing else of it. A couple of visits later, and I'm curious...does anyone have a vegan pasty?! The answer is YES! I could only find them at Irontown Pasties in Negaunee, MI. They have a regular and a spicy version that you can pick up half-baked and frozen at any time, or call ahead at least an hour to get them hot and ready to eat. Just ate half a pasty (pronounced pass-tee) from here & I can't quite do my absolute delight justice... because... So happy!!!! Incredible flavor as always. I had a couple gluten free veggie pasties from this delightful shop fedexed to me from the UP, MI, to where I now live in AZ (crying from the deliciousness in emojis). Seriously the best! I've kept these frozen for some time since receiving in the mail because it's always a sad day when you don't have delicious pasties to look forward to. I have two more to sustain me thankfully, plus the rest of this pasty to enjoy tomorrow. I did my best to eat only a third to enjoy it longer but no chance lol; too good. Miss fresh pasties being readily available but this place in the UP is my favorite of any pasties I've tried. *No, the pasties at the pasty places in AZ are not the same caliber or even comparable in my humble opinion; these are the best! Even though they've sat in my freezer for a while this still tasted terrific. Yay, happy pasty day! One of mine is one of their dessert pasties which I already know is delicious so I'll save that for last. Lost the cooking directions so it wasn't quite fully cooked (tried basing it on what I could find online) but I'll get it right tomorrow. They make their gluten free pasties on a designated day to most effectively prevent & minimize cross contamination as they understand how important that is to keep people safe. I appreciate that as well as the fact that it's somehow just as delicious as any gluten-containing pasty I'd tried prior to having to give up gluten (stubbornly after being told I'd die if I didn't give it up several years ago after multiple back to back times in the ER/ICU eventually convinced me, begrudgingly haha). So when places are educated & truly care about diligence with it like they are here I always think it's worth mentioning. If you know someone who can drive here for you & FedEx it to you I do suggest! Tip: winter time is better & keep it in a decent cooler during shipping to have it arrive safely. I have been coming to this location since 1986 (hubby's been coming here since location originally opened) - it use to be Grandma T's before new owners took over. Pasties here are delicious and thank goodness not DRY. Did I mention it's also seasoned perfect!. When ever we are in town visiting family, Ishpeming/Big Bay/Marquette, we always stop here for delicious pasties for lunch. And yes, we get frozen ones to take back to Fenton MI. Worth the trip out to Negaunee, always order their gluten-friendly pasty one hour in advance, and it has always been ready when I arrive. The ironic part is, John and family use Bob's Red Mill products in their pasties and the pasty I prefer to order, and their milling and packaging headquarters are located in Milwaukie, OR, which is only about three miles from my house, out here in Portland, OR! The owner came out and talked to us and shared his story as well as his vast knowledge of the history of pasties worldwide. I liked the filling but the crust was not to my liking. It might be that all crust is the gluten-free advertised; I don't know. I prefer a traditional crust from regular flour. My Finnish mother made her crust from lard, which is amazingly good, but never seen anymore. The ketchup was in a no-name squeeze bottle and tasted like "bulk" ketchup, not Hunt's or Heinz. I've been visiting the Marquette area for 20+ years now at least two to three times annually to visit my in-laws. I always hit Irontown Pasties in Negaunee on the way back down-state to grab a pre-ordered bag of half-baked frozen pasties (traditional beef) on every single trip. As the grand-daughter of a Cornish woman, I *know* pasties. Sure, I could bake them myself the way Grandma taught me, but, phew, that's a labor-intensive day-long project. Hands down, Irontown has the best authentic Cornish pasties that I have found in the UP as of date. The balance of beef, potato, rutabaga and seasoning is just right, and the crust is flaky, fatty, and with the perfect twisted edge. Yes, just the way Grandma taught me. The people at Irontown are friendly and knowledgeable. The mere fact that they have had a gluten-free option on the menu for years is a testament to their integrity and customer service philosophy. If you're not into the traditional Cornish beef pasty recipe, there are other "fancier" varieties to choose from. The fruit turnovers are particularly delectable, although I try not to purchase those too frequently as I tend to instantly gobble them all up. I HIGHLY recommend Irontown Pasties! read more

When I first moved to the UP I was quickly introduced to pasties, including the correct pronunciation. We went to a popular spot, whose name I will not mention, and I was unimpressed by the dry, crumbly crust and meh filling. Everyone insisted that pasties are amazing and I wanted to believe them so I asked to try a different place for comparison. I asked if there was a place that made pasties with alternative fillings and was brought to Irontown. I was immediately fascinated by the variety which included the traditional meat pasties as well as chicken pot pie (my favorite, so far), cheeseburger, jalapeño cheeseburger, jalapeño popper, veggie and others. I noticed a difference in the very first bite. There was less crust, which was a good thing, and it was soft and moist. The filling was hot but not scalding and the meat, veggies, sauce & overall taste were just right. Irontown is now my favorite pastie place and I have zero desire to try pasties anywhere else now. I would highly recommend them to locals as well as people just visiting or passing through who are interested in trying one of the few uniquely local convenient comfort foods. read more

John Cizek is a very patient man. My fall colors tour would not have been complete without a visit to Keweenaw Peninsula; and starting the day with a decent breakfast to go. Unfortunately, I could not find the Iron Town's Negaunee location on Yelp. Both locations have the same owner. This is about my visit to the Negaunee location, but I am sure both places are the same in quality when it comes to Yooperland and understanding the art of the Pasty. My friend had tried to pawn me off with cereal that morning. Since he lives at the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base; by the time we made it to the gas station in Negaunee, I was ravenous. I may be from the Chicago area; but I was raised on meat and potatoes for breakfast lunch and dinner. To me, cereal is a snack. I am also supposed to be on a diet! I had not eaten bread, pasta, rice, or potatoes in months. Whenever I travel, this is my time to cheat on my diet. Waiting for my friend to fill up his truck, I kept thinking how I knew I'd only last another hour before I'd start tearing into the junk food he had brought in the cooler. I really just needed a meal. I started staring into the gas station food mart and began to wonder if there was anything in there that might be better suited to hold me over. I'm always hungry. I knew instantly it wouldn't help when all it did was make me hungrier and I started to think when our next sit-down meal would be. Then like a shimmering beacon of promise, my eyes glanced into the rear-view mirror and smiling back at me was the sign for Iron Town Pasties. I barely said anything to my friend before I grabbed my purse and ran across the street. Even the construction workers that were reconstructing the intersection seemed to sense my urgency and one of the guys walked me across the street. While he escorted me, he said, "People will stop for this yellow vest I am wearing. Just saying." It made me smile because I really was crossing that street at literally the first chance I got -- even if it meant cutting it close. I walked into the tiny restaurant and John is already eyeballing me. I must have not looked like a local in my designer sunglasses, with a coach purse hanging from my arm. Then I made the biggest mistake pronouncing pasty the wrong way. John tried to hold back a smile as I immediately corrected myself. Like I said, John is patient. "Where are you from?" he asks. Of course, I give him my life story in a nutshell. After some small talk, my friend had brought the truck around and came in to order a Pasty too. We both got the chicken-pot pie pasties, which were to die for, and just like the pot pies my mom used to make, only in pasty form. We also got free samples of mini cinnamon pasties. The bread was so amazing-- moist and buttery. In my 6 full years of living in the U.P. I had never sampled a pasty and I am happy I finally got the chance. There are different kinds of pasties, including a hamburger jalapeno one; which I wished I had gotten the chance to try. You don't need fast food in the U.P. All you need is Iron Town Pasties. I have been eating pasties for years. My Grandma used to make them, my mom makes them and I occasionally make them. I have yet to find a "great" pasty shop that can compare. However, that being said, I still love to try places especially when visiting up here in the UP. Iron town pasties is in the Masonic Center of shops in downtown Marquette. The pasty here looks fabulous, until you take the first bite. It had an off taste that I find hard to describe. The filling was 95% potato, with an occasional carrot or rutabaga piece. The meat was ground which I'm not a fan of. I prefer cut meat. Although, I realize it's easier and cheaper to use burger. Anyways, the meat just appeared like it was mush mixed in with the potatoes. No onion, no flavor whatsoever. I was wholeheartedly disappointed. Would not go back here I'd it was the only place open and I was starving hungry!! Sorry. Just not good food. read more

Fantastic pasties! I was impressed that they have gluten free and vegan pasties (which are tasty, even if you eat meat). Their crust (an essential part of a good pasty) is magnificent. You can snag frozen pasties to take with you and bake at home, too. I've heard people complain that they're not "traditional" enough, but I think that's what sets them apart (if it's even true). They are propelling pasties forward, in a way, by trying new things and expanding the customer base. The shop is quaint and has a great ice cream selection in the summer! read more
