Keeping score
Kris S.

This was so much fun!!!! We called ahead and reserved a spot for two of us on Thursday at 5:00. We had about 15 minutes of rules and instruction by our coach Anna. Then we started throwing! We both did pretty good on hitting the target and making it stick to the target. After the second throw, I said our bodies are going to hurt so bad tomorrow. It is somewhat physical, but not terribly so. If you're concerned about being to old.....peaschhha! We were two women in our mid to late 50's chucking that ax and making it stick!! We got a few bulls eyes. We spent time getting to know Anna our coach. She was great by the way. We now want to go purchase our own axes and bling them up and make some tutus and get a picture taken in the viking boat. There were two of us, so it was simple. One (bad hip) used the white board to keep score. The other one (bad at math) ran after the ax. We made a great team there. We played three games of 10 throws highest score wins. I won two games!! We re threw every throw that landed on the floor. Cause we were there to hit stuff and make it stick. you can play what ever game you want and have your own rules. Children can do this as well. They said they have a 7 year old on a league and and 8 year old regular. The place has a viking them. Don't panic when you go to the rest room. Look at the pictures and you will figure it out. They were clean and they have real paper towels. I loved the restroom decor. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. There must be about 8 throwing cages with 2 targets each. I'm going on memory here and well that's not always reliable. They serve pop and light snacks. You can bring in beer and wine, no hard liquour. I brought a couple Mike's hard lemonades. I think you can bring your own food in as well. $20 an hour for throwing. That was all we could muster up anyway. They have a rewards program. If you are paying with credit card, it pops up on the screen after you approve your signature. I missed that screen and was told that they couldn't add my time to my rewards since I skipped that step. that really kind of irritated me. So remember to ask about rewards before you pay so you know how to get the rewards. Tips: Call ahead and see if you can reserve a spot. Pack a couple drinks and some snacks. Cause why not drink alcohol and throw axes. Use common sense....it's in the rules. Stop and look at the restroom pictures so you make a wise decision. Listen to your coach......pick Anna if you can. She would cheer when we hit the bulls eye. Have fun, don't worry about what other people might think or if you can do it. Just give it a shot. A few hours later do some stretches for your arms. I'm waiting for the sore muscles. There is some bending over required if your ax lands on the ground. Don't wear see through leggings. :o) Lost a star because they couldn't add on to my rewards a minute after I paid.

Visited Ironside Axe Club for the first time this week to celebrate my husband's and a friend's birthday. We had a group of 10 and were given two lanes to share. I have been axe throwing at another local location. It might of been the great group we had, but I enjoyed Ironside's experience more than I have in the past. We were assigned a "coach" which was really helpful. About half of our group had not thrown before and even though I had, I needed the coaching to get the hang of it. He was very attentive and helpful. He watched all of us throw and gave suggestions to improve. He also got us started on games and helped us through those. We played guys against gals. The guys won all of the games, BUT only by a hair (us ladies held our own!). Once we had done the general axe throwing, played some games, and were "more experienced" our coachman brought out some other "toys" to toss around - Ninja star, multiple axes at once, knives, and taught us some tricks. Ironside has a basic concession stand and bar. They also allow you to bring in snacks, food, or treats which is nice. I had a great time and I think the rest of our group did too. We are already talking to friends about going back again. I would recommend!

I had a fabulous time here with some friends for a bday party! And yes the day after I felt sore, so not only is this fun but it is a legit work out! I have been hearing about this place for awhile now and I'm glad I finally got my AXE there! We had a station booked for 2 hours, we had 6 throwers and a host "teacher," export... Shane. He ruled he was not over the top, but he kept us safe and he was lighthearted a good cheerleader and had great tips on throwing more accurately and with safety! He even showed us some trick throws! The place is super clean, and they have it laid out for safety and fun for all! You can buy sodas and snacks and or BRING YOUR OWN BOOZE, we didn't which was not the worst idea! I'm competitive so naturally I was having a blast competing with friends and people who I had just met! I got a few bullseyes, so yep we rang the bell (not Game Of Thrones style) but like a knock out punch to Clubber Lang style! They also have a huge Viking boat to take some photos in, and heck you can eve buy some of these crazy sharp weapons! :) 35 bucks is cheap for 2 hours of an experience I never thought I would have! I had a blast!

Different axes for purchase.

Omg, this was so much fun! I really did not think I could do it but it really was attainable and the instruction Magnus provided was invaluable. We went in the middle of the afternoon and there was not too much going on but the owner Scott was there and Magnus. They both were uber nice and extremely helpful. The place has a great vibe and waiting lounge with comfy chairs. They allow you to bring your own beer and wine in as well. You rent time by the hour and you can use their axes, purchase axes or bring your own. We used the ones they have there. You think when you start off that this is really fun and you soon find out there is an extra bonus it is a core, strength and cardio workout too. We were sweating early into our hour session. Do not put heavy clothes on to do this unless it is layers and you intend to take them off as you get warm. You should reserve time so you do not interfere with leagues and you can get right on a lane. They also have tables in the ax throwing room to watch or to bring food. If you ever want to feel super accomplished and strong this is it! I will be back very soon!!! Run don't walk to this place it is magnificent!

What a fun place to go! It was more of a workout than I expected. Ha! Today Magnus was our instructor. He was so patient with us (especially me). He helped us learn to throw the axes and explained everything in detail. He also stepped back and let us throw on our own. They staff will work with you to make you successful. Anybody no matter your skill level or shape you are in can do this activity. They offer on Wed a lunch & throw-you get 30 min of throwing and the lunch special from Gustos (pizza/salad/drink). They do have a leagues during the night time so check first to see if the have open throwing. They also do big groups/work Outings/people just wanting to learn. They chips/pop for sale as well. You can bring your own beer and wine (no hard liquor). They also have axes for sale if you want to buy your own. There is also a few table games around if you have to wait to throw. Scott (the owner) and Magnus were very helpful and friendly.

Throwing axes....is there really a down side to this? Ironside Axe Club located one block east of Ohana steakhouse and one block south of the closed Toys "R" Us is the essential 'man card' type of place. The cost to me initially was steep ($20 per hour), but let me tell you, after an hour of hurling an axe of steel and iron at a wall 12-15 feet away, you know your arm just got a heck of a workout. Scott, Lisa, and Magnus run quite the operation letting a group of 5 guys have fun. At the end of our time, the trick shots were shown and bragging rights in our group commenced. They also have a #watl axe throwing league and host parties from a small to large scale. Definitely will return!!

Had a team outing here and it was a lot of fun. The staff was really helpful and they take the time to show you how to throw the axes. They're with you the entire time so you won't feel like you're lost and they'll keep things moving with games and showing you trick shots. You can bring your own food and drinks too. Throwing the different kind of axes was a lot of fun and you don't have to be athletic to do this. You'll surprise yourself at how well you'll do

Second in a row.

I would highly recommend going here. Our Coach, Mark, really hit the mark. He made it super easy to learn and was there if we needed anything. There are different types of axes to throw and different tricks to learn. There is also a Viking boat where you can grab some props and take a photo. We will be back.

We had a fantastic time here as a group of four. The instruction and attention we received was top-notch. The instructor told us that by the end of the hour, we'd all be throwing trick shots and sticking them but I didn't believe him. But we all did. We learned to throw one-handed, two-handed, overhand, underhand, and even blindfolded. We absolutely loved it.

Inside North Grand Mall. Park where you like. The sign on…read morethe east facing entry gets you in. Walking in there is indoor golf. The guys I held the door for carried in their own clubs. Spit on the other side of the wall was a large party. This is the axe throwing area. Not knowing where we were going, we headed back through this area. There are some pool tables and dart boards. Cool! We then were stepping "out" into the mall area. Set up like an outdoor patio. There were tables, chairs, cornhole and more. We crossed the mall and headed into Duck Pin bowling. 8 lanes. Much like regular bowling, just enough room to congregate. Short lanes, pins on strings, small balls. We had to wait, so we hung out in the bar and kitchen area. More dining space, a couple of arcade games, and a batting cage occupied this space. The boys tried their hand at batting. Rather trippy if you ask me. You choose the game. Don your helmet and bat. Get in there, step up, and look"down field." The entire wall of the other side of the cage is video. One tiny square has a trap door that opens just as the pitcher lets go. The ball comes out at the speed that can be 100 mph. It's cool. It helped kill the time as we waited our turn for duck pin bowling. We enjoyed the music, drinks, food, and conversation as we waited. When we got to play, we got a quick run down of how it worked. Top tip. Don't get your fingers pinched by the returning balls! It was fun and easy for everyone to enjoy. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere was fun. If I lived closer I'd go regularly. Great indoor space for the cold Iowa days.
