If you were to tell me there is an establishment that serves beer and throws axes -- under the same roof, mind you -- I would've thought to myself that there is no way anyone makes it out alive. But Lumber Axe chopped my expectations. The environment was full of laughs, friendly competition, and great service. The wait for drinks wasn't long by any means. I was also given a little lesson between crafts and mystery pints, were were both specials on their list of quality beers. The mystery pint is great! Thoroughly enjoyed it. The place is located in downtown Des Moines and has limited street parking... the set up is a bit unorganized. When I called to ask questions I was told that there was a max of 5 ppl on the public range but in all actuality it could be up to 12 ppl. You have very limited axe throwing time. The make you play games with others and they also make throw one a 1-2-3 count. It is a bit disturbing actually and disruptive. There were very young patrons and we were the oldest by far. If you only want to play games and have limited time throwing fir your money this is your place. It was a real disappointment. There is another place in town that allows you to throw as much as you like. I would recommend it if you truly want to throw. read more

I booked this venue for my sister's bachelorette party. We had a party of 14 ladies and they were able to accomidate us all. None of us had ever thrown axe before. The moment we walked in we were greeted and taken care of. Wayne the manager was so professional and kind. We had so much fun!!! Joshua and Andy were excellent bartenders and instructors. I went here with my section of people at work (about 10 people) and it was amazing! Aaron our instructor was fun, engaging and you could tell he loved what he did. The food from their restaurant is also really good! Everyone in my group enjoyed what they got. I got the 'Tupac hotdog' and it was delicious. I enjoyed myself so much I have been recommending it to everyone I know just so I have an excuse to go back and practice more. Super fun time and I can't wait to go back and do it again! read more

I have tried communicating with Lumber Axe through the corona virus situation and was looking for a refund for a date during which they were closed. I have only received formatted emails stating that due to their cancellation policy I would only receive a credit. I have laid out clearly that this was not a cancellation, that their business is closed and therefore this shouldn't fall under a cancellation policy. I understand wanting to support local businesses during this uncertain time, but the way they have treated me as their customer is really disappointing. I would have gladly rescheduled a date upon them reopening, and being able to find a date that works for the group that was going to go. Instead I am being expected to lose out on refunding my deposit during a time where people are being laid off and financial status is concerning. And again I am not getting any communication from the establishment other than referring to their cancellation policy. read more

We had a great time, especially thanks to Wayne, our axe throwing teacher! Wayne was knowledgeable, safe, and most importantly, FUN! He made the experience for us. He helped correct our form as needed but let us enjoy the experience. We would highly recommend Lumber Axe for anyone wanting to try throwing some axes!
