They don't know the difference between a Smashburger and a hamburger, but obviously they charge you more for the Smashburger I ordered the Smashburger and it came out with two forms patties as they were hamburger patties. on this, the third day of my biketour, I was extremely appreciative to get off the road and enjoy a respite of excellent brunch and rest. My microwave brekkie back at the Western Motel in Deming was good, but even the minimal pedaling I was performing on my "FrankenBike" was still exhausting and refueling/rest was required. I really appreciated the outside cast-iron table & chairs, where eating adjacent to my machine is much preferred. Inside the Petro Station is a wide variety of goods that will meet every travellers needs. My interest, though, was a hearty meal that will keep my body going West on I-10 for the next 45miles/75kms to Lordsburg, and the Iron Skillet was perfect. The food was good but like not the best/special, but overall good especially for traveling long distance. They're the only restaurant around and they know it. Took about an hour from sit down to get food, might be understaffed but the place didn't seem too busy. Got the steerburger (chopped steak) with some kinda soup. Steerburger was fantastic but the soup tasted like prison slop from a bag, but man that steerburger was good. Driving between Alamogordo, NM and Mesa, AZ we love to stop at this Petro station just outside of Deming. Yesterday, for the first time, we stopped in and ate lunch at the Iron Skillet inside. Glad we did. We sat ourselves and were waited on quickly. Tea for my wife and lemonade for me. We both had the soup and salad bar. Loved the clam chowder and posole options for the soups. The salad bar had a plethora of selections besides salad and toppings/dressing. You really do serve yourself on an iron skillet, too. Very cool touch. We don't always have a lot of time when we are traveling from point to point, but based on this experience I can see us making time for a return visit to this Iron Skillet location. Definitely want to try one of their hot meals/sandwiches on a future visit and they had a delicious looking cookie topped with ice cream in the menu as well. read more

It is the worst patty melt I have ever tried in my life, it is a pretty basic item to be so bad. The reason the hamburger is terrible is because the hamburger is dry and cold. I believe they pre cooked them then refrigerated them than warm back up once ordered truly dry and bland. This is a sit down restaurant not a McDonald's drive through, not worth even trying. Worst Iron skillet I have ever visited! Just about every table and the bar was filled with dirty plates. The salad bar decoration was frozen and dead making the food seem very unappetizing. The potato salad looked old and the fruit was not ripe and had no flavor other than tasting off. The young waitresses were in a back corner talking about boys and what plans they had later. The food was terrible, the chicken taste like rubber and warm at best, fries were cold, shrimp was over cooked and fish was undercooked, looked like it was going to swim off my plate. Anyone who travels on the interstate highway seems to pass by these things all the time. But if you're anything like me, you probably wonder to yourself, "Self, is this place any good? And would I ever take my children here to eat a casually humble breakfast in passing?" As my recent visit would prove, the answer to both of those questions is a surprising..."Yes!" However, that response does not go without some minor caveats, and we shall address those shortly. First (as per usual), let us address the positive notes of the infamous Iron Skillet. First positive for me was the fact that I didn't pay for my meal at all; the restaurant did (a courtesy to the company I work for. we will leave it at that). Second, the location: it's perfect for what it is. And what Iron Skillet is, ultimately, is a trucker stop where one can order freshly made short order food that ranks somewhere beneath Waffle House, but slightly above Denny's or Applebee's (post 1999 for the latter). Since the only thing I have ever ordered from this place was breakfast, we'll discuss in detail the omelet with home fries and toast that I sampled. The omelet was...pretty good. I appreciate the fact that they used real eggs rather than that unmistakably fake taste of egg beaters or, God forbid, dehydrated eggs that come out of a bag which is served to our fine American troops deployed in various parts of the world (don't ask. just...don't ask.). Where I find fault with this omelet though...is in the chunks of ham they decided to use. BLUF: they were much too big. Maybe it's just my personal opinion. But when ordering a ham & cheese omelet of sorts, the ham pieces should not be the size of chicken McNuggets. Maybe some patrons actually like this sort of thing. Who knows? As for me...I just don't get it. At least the omelet itself was light and fluffy, as most properly cooked eggs should be. The home fries and toast were both forgettable, to be honest. The home fries were bland, and the amount of salt and pepper supplied in the plastic silverware kit (yes, I ordered my meal to go) was not nearly enough to save the lack of flavor in these things. It only makes me wonder what the hash browns would have tasted like if I had ordered those. The toast was just...toast. Not sure how else to describe it. Neither good nor bad, but still edible. The service was kinda slow, too. And maybe that's forgivable if you consider the fact they were serving 10 other to go orders from folks in my company. But c'mon! How long does it take to cook a freakin' omelet?! Honestly! It's not like I ordered a well done steak. Would I visit a place like this again? Well, yeah...maybe. IF (and only if) a more familiar and popular restaurant chain wasn't immediately available in the area whilst on a lengthy road trip. Let's be honest: sometimes you're in a pinch and you take what you can get and hope for the best. Compared to more recognizable restaurants, they may be middle of the road. But overall, Iron Skillet is A-OK, just as the rating says. I'd give this place 3 orders of home fries desperately seeking Mister Salt and Misses Pepper out of 5. read more

Total failure today. We waited nearly 45 minutes for a patty melt, and they weren't busy. Two other orders came up before ours, and those customers had been seated long after us. When it arrived, it was a scrawny patty on what looked like Texas toast. What no rye bread? And a sliced red onion on top instead of grilled onions. Nearly $10 too. Thanks to Misty for doing everything possible to make it up to us. We probably won't try the restaurant again. Good place for a restroom break and gas. Otherwise, no. Hire a good cook. The only reason we stopped here is because it started snowing and we wanted to get off the road until the sun came up. We waited for them to open at 6am and we were basically the only people in the whole restaurant. Our service was extremely fast, probably because we were the only ones there, but we also customized our orders and didn't have any problems. I could not stop laughing, they have this welcome to deming menu within the menu. "Carne asada" plate it is literally a burger half ass chopped up in pieces that I assume are supposed to fit inside the super small tortillas they give you. If I could give this place a zero rating, I would. We stopped here for a quick bite on our way home to NM from Phoenix. My husband ordered the soup and salad bar, I ordered a salad with a grilled chicken breast on top. My husband ate his soup, then his salad, and I was still waiting. At one point, the waitress told me my salad was ready, but I waited another 10-15 minutes before it came out. She had failed to bring the salad dressing with it. We must have been there a good 40 minutes. We chose to leave without my having eaten anything. Nobody should have to wait more than 10 or 15 minutes for a hot meal at a place like this. read more

This place is super slow, and confused when you asked for a Burrito they look at you like you're crazy, but yet they sell them on dinner the menu. Waited over 20 minutes to get egg in a tortilla rolled up, if this place didn't have a Starbucks I would've never stopped and trust me I never will again. For a truck stop dinner in a Petro gas station this place was fantastic. A nice verity of simple foods. Burgers, chicken parm, wraps, a nice salad bar with 2 options for soup that change daily( today was broccoli and menudo) It's like a Denny's but the food is well made and delicious were Denny's would be a 2-3 Iron Skillet is a 4. If your passing threw the vast emptiness of New Mexico( seriously there is like nothing here at least on I10) this is a great place to stop and get food. You will spend less that 10$ and get a satisfying meal. I ordered the chicken quesadilla and it was well packed with chicken, peppers and onions with a nice amount of cheese.
