After getting a piercing here, and being present for several friends piercings and tattoos, I feel like I know the vibe of this place pretty well. Why is it that most, tattoo parlor folks feel it is their duty to frown upon everyone who comes in the door and isn't sporting all kinds of visible ink? I have had some of the desk workers there be totally cool with me though, so it isn't like everyone is an a-hole there, just like 80% of the time. As far as piercings go, I feel the prices are pretty fair. Tattoos on the other hand are a bit much. I guess because they are the big name in St. Louis and there isn't any major competition they can play that game. read more

I've gotten a couple piercings at Iron Age. The last time I was there was for my clitoral hood piercing. I originally wanted a triangle (look it up) and I appreciate the way the piercer took it seriously and spent 20 minutes marking and measuring and making sure it was possible. Apparently in the end I didn't have the right "anatomy" because I'm "too petite" (well...whatever you say) so I just went for a standard horizontal clitoral hood. Sterile technique, perfect placement, all those things. I was very happy with the piercing itself. But the guy (wish I could remember his name) was talented, but was kind of off. He made very minimal insincere small talk, but was pretty much silent the whole time (like I said, we spent a good minute together while he was playing connect-the-dots on my ladyparts). He's concentrating, whatever, that's fine. But then his cell phone rang....he let it go to voicemail. Silence. Then, "Well, that was awkward." Actually? It wasn't awkward until you said it was awkward. Thanks for that. He also made a couple of sexual innuendos that made me a little uncomfortable. I guess he was just trying to have a sense of humor since his face was all up in my vulva, and it didn't offend me per se, and I rolled with it, but I just thought it was a little unprofessional. Pretty much everyone I've dealt with at the front desk has been pretty snooty with me. I think they see me coming and peg me for a teeny bopper that doesn't know anything about body modifications or take them seriously, so they don't take me seriously. And it's the Loop. Comes with the territory. The tattoo prices also seem to be pretty jacked up. I will not be getting any ink there. All in all, I think they're good for piercings, but it's not my first choice. I've had better experiences with All Star, who are less pretentious. read more

I have quite a few tattoos, and Iron Age is by and large the best shop I've been to. I LOVE Caleb there. He's done several pieces for me, each of which have been just phenomenal. Jason James is my husband's artist there and he is also great. You will NOT leave this shop with a crappy tattoo. They are a bit pricey, but for something that is going to be on you forever, it's worth it, and you definitely get what you pay for. Iron Age's customer service is not to be topped either. Everyone from their front desk staff, to the artists, to the managers Jim and Tony are extremely friendly, competent and professional. Plus, the artists are willing to work with you on your designs and incorporate things into them to make them even better than you imagined. They are true professionals at Iron Age, and I will never go anywhere else in St. Louis! read more

Unfriendly staffs, unhelpful receptionists and too small of place. Went there with a friend of mine who happened to be gay, he was asking if he could get a tattoo of 'two male symbols' in between his thumb and his index finger. The staff who we talked to could not be anymore friendlier once he heard that, which I assumed do not like gay customers. Saw few other staffs and none of them are smiling, prices are also on the high range. I'd rather go somewhere else and spend my money on a place that is much nicer and is not so homophobic. I've always heard of Iron Age and decided to come in for my fourth tattoo. I walked in and they were able to do it immediately as it was small and simple. Compared to the previous places I've gone for tattoos, Iron Age was below average. I didn't feel as though the artist really cared to be there, which isn't a good feeling for someone tattooing you. But there was no need for that, because it turned out even better than I could have planned! I am a strong believer in the fact that a GOOD tattoo parlor will NOT just tattoo anything and everything that you ask them too. They will give you their experienced opinion on how good it will look/how long it will last in the area that you're requesting, or even if it's just not a good idea- they wont do it or they'll suggest something else. That, is Iron Age studios. My husband and I wanted to get tattoos on the inside of our ring fingers and their initial response was that it wont last. He even brought over one of their guys with tattoos on his palms to show us. However, the guy they pulled aside was blatantly honest and said he CAN do it, but to get it good and deep in there... we might not 'like' him for the 30 seconds that it would take. But, balls to the wall, we decided to just get it done. I got a heart and my husband got roman numerals of our wedding date. The results look awesome, totally worth the 30seconds of pain and I really, really appreciated them taking the time to fit us in even though they were clearly boooked. I went here to get my nose pierced about a year and a half ago. It was my first piercing, and since it was on my face, I was a little nervous about it (I thought understandably so). The guy who was piercing my nose put the ring on my nose so I could see how it would end up looking before he actually pierced it, and when I looked in the mirror, stewing about it for 60 whole seconds, he got impatient and urged me to hurry up and do it. I get it: I'm totally a noob and a nose ring isn't a big deal (to you), but I thought it was a little bit rude to be judged for my slightly basic-betch appearance. On the other hand, he was very professional and everything was completely sterilized and clean. He told me a funny story to distract me from the giant needle, and when I got woozy afterward, kept me laying down until it was safe to stand up again. read more

I don't have any tattoos, but if I did, I would only get one from Iron Age. Two of my best friends are like works of art themselves when it comes to tattooing and almost all their ink was created at Iron Age Studio, and I was lucky enough to get to watch some of it happen. If you've never been tattooed or seen someone else tattooed, it's an experience you should have at least once in your life. Iron Age is very clean. There isn't anything so important as cleanliness. I think you could probably eat of any surface in Iron Age. Iron Age has trained, talented staff. Judging by my friend's tattoos, the binders full of Iron Age work, and the vast array of fresh ink that comes out of this place, Iron Age is some of the best work I've ever seen. Iron Age staff is also super friendly, will create exactly what you want (or improve on a design if you so desire), and will be as gentle as you'd like them to be. Have gotten two tattoos now from Trevor Collis who has one of the studio spaces upstairs so this review is not reflective of the first floor since I didn't get mine there. That being said, the people working the desk were friendly each time. I appreciated Trevor's professionalism, both times we did a consultation and scheduled an appointment for my tattoos. Both of mine only took one 2 hour appointment each. Even though they only took one session each, they are sizable and somewhat intricate. I found his studio space clean and comfortable. I went here to get my tattoo done. They staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable. They had nice decorations, and a wall full of various works that they did and can do, which made me feel confident about this place. I heard many good reviews from people all over, and I would have to say that I was not disappointed at all. My tattoo artist talked me through everything, finished my tattoo in roughly 10 minutes and let me look at it to make sure it was okay, did some finishing touches and slapped a bandage on there. They had reminder cards for caring for the tattoo in the coming weeks, and I got a couple stickers to stick on my guitar case. Very professional and very cool people that are very skilled and very good at what they do. The price was decent for professional quality service. Ok so not going to lie all the reviews for this place scared me but I figured why not lol My husband and i's 3 year wedding anniversary is tomorrow so we decided we would get tattoos. With this being my husbands first tattoo he was fairly nervous. When we walked in we were greeted and both the guys behind the table answered our questions and even helped my husband pick out a nice spot for his tattoo. I already pretty much went in with a plan. We got a clover both on our wrists. My artist wasn't heavy handed at all and my husband felt really confident with his artist (he was nervous he would be a bad canvas.) After I finished with my tattoo I sat with my husband for a bit and his artist was finished with his fairly quickly. His artist even commented on how good he sat. We paid and left. Iron Age knows how to get you to walk into the door, but I turned around and left shortly after. I stopped by there to get info and a price quote for my first tat. The guy I spoke to was not extremely helpful but provided adequate information. Then I heard the price... WTF? All I wanted was lettering done along my bra line consisting of only 9 letters and it was going to cost $140. I'm only 32 inches so it wasn't going to be that big. I must admit. The location is nice (on Delmar Loop) and the shop looks nice and clean. I ended up going to Trader Bob's on South Jefferson and I am highly pleased with my tat... and it only cost me $80 less than Iron Age. read more

I would give this place zero stars if I could. Jamie is SO DISGUSTINGLY RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL. I have Never had anyone tell me "get the f*ck out " of a professional establishment in my entire life. She was upset because we addressed her poor customer service via telephone once we arrived in person. She also seemed embarrassed that I had to explain to her that saying "first come first served" versus the plethora of information you actually need to know before coming in is NOT the same thing. She said she didn't give a "f*ck" if I wrote a Yelp review so here it is. She also said this in front of my children which is enough itself to cause a very bad situation. It was absurd, ridiculous, beyond unprofessional, and the entire staff should be embarrassed since they heard her outburst and said NOTHING. She obviously has some sort of "rank" because she felt entitled to be disrespectful and repulsive. Go to ALL STAR TATTOOS instead. They are kind ,professional , clean, welcoming, thorough and modern. I went here for two reasons. The first was to get my belly button piercing. The Lady who did it was wonderful and eased my nerves. However the piercing was rejected by my body and there was a terrible infection. I went to another shop to get it looked at that was close and was told that had the lady done her job right this would not have happened. I guess whatI am getting to is make sure they tell you what could happen to your piercing!!! A few months later I went to get my first Tattoo here because I was told by my roommate that it was a really great place. Going in it looked cool and hip. I spoke with a very nice artist and had most of my questions answered. When It came time for me to get my tattoo done, I had a terrible artist that was very rude, and told me that if I "didn't have anything nice to say, then to not say anything at all." So I walk in the receptionist was awesome. When it was time for me to get the piercing the guy says "come on", and thinking umm am I suppose to follow him?? No hi? He doesn't even look at me... his head is down... just says "sit... he says right or left..." I POINT TO MY RIGHT EAR! But since he doesn't look at me starts to take the needle out open the alcohol swab and proceeds to wipe my nose... My tattoo looks fine but the artist fought tooth and nail with me every step of the way. He was super rude and belittling and made fun of me with his co-workers. Jason was not accommodating with all my wants/ideas, was clearly tired and just ready to peace out, and laughed at me with all his coworkers because i'm getting my second tattoo and i don't want it bigger than a quarter..This felt like a really judgmental environment. I got my tongue pierced at Iron Age. The piercer (Luc) was awesome, friendly, professional, and all around, a great guy. Paperwork, filled out by him, said it would take 1-3 months to completely heal.. perfectly fine with me. He then told me that I could come back in to get the jewelry changed in 4-6 weeks. Therefore, I returned about 4 weeks later to get my jewelry changed. I talked to Anne at the front desk, she took a look at it and let me pick out my jewelry and said it would be a few minutes. I was called back and the guy, I have no idea who he was, asked how long ago I had it done. I replied with "about 4 weeks", he immediately got an attitude and took a look at it and said he couldn't change it. Anne seemed to think he was full of it, but, I left. Granted that day was my one and only negative experience at Iron Age, it will always be on my mind when I go back. Very clean place, friendly staff, great location, great prices! Bottom line... I would recommend this place for piercings. I'm very satisfied with my piercing, just not this one guy. Unfortunately, the negative experiences are the ones we remember. read more

I have had the most positive experience at Iron Age. I have 2 tattoos that were done there, one that was about 6 hrs and the other was about 1 hr. The staff was always so helpful and very informative. I had Chappy do my larger tattoo. I was able to bring in a watercolor picture and he took it and was able to turn it into an amazing tattoo. He is a true artist and very precise. His specialty is in Asian inspired art (and i don't mean letters on your arm!) He is booked a few weeks out so be prepared to make an appt. and return at a later date especially for a custom piece. The 2nd tattoo that I had done was by Mikey who was a visiting artist from Columbia MO. It was an old school Sailor Jerry piece. He was so nice..even when I almost passed out because of the pain (just an FYI...top of foot tattoos really do hurt!) If you want a little art on your body that is original then head over to Iron Age- great staff- amazing art- and a clean, sterile environment. read more

She has recently been replaced by two brown haired girls who have shown me unprovoked attitude and have been rude both times I have been. I went with a few friends to get their tattoos done here. The staff was very friendly and helpful each time. They used humor to try and calm everyone involved down. Specifically the last time I went, my friend got a small tattoo right around her pelvis region. The entire price was less than $80 and the entertainment value of the artist was almost worth that. I realize it was smaller than most tattoos, but it was done in less than a half hour! The finish product looked amazing. The colors were bright and the design was perfect (after the scabbing and healing). I can't really tell you much about the pain aspect. Right off the bat I'll say that this review should've been written a long time ago...I got the tattoo that I'm writing about back in 2008, but better late than never, eh? Okay so I had this great, elaborate idea for a large-ish tattoo I wanted between my shoulder blades. The idea for it had evolved over the course of about six months and I finally decided it was time to pull the trigger. I trusted an artist at Iron Age with my idea because I wanted the best that St Louis had to offer, and I was not disappointed. I can't draw worth a damn, but my artist (feeling REAL bad that I can't remember his name right about now) interpreted my little venn diagram of where I wanted things to be and how I wanted them to look and made something totally kickass out of it. Seriously, there was a LOT of super-fine needlework involved and it looks amazing...I kind of wish it was on my front so I could stare at it in the mirror more easily. :P The price for his services was right around $100/hr, but quality is pretty important when we're talking about tattoos, no? Totally worth it and when I finish thinking about my next tattoo (left arm sleeve), I'll be going back fo sho. read more

I guess different people sometimes get treated differently at tattoo shops. I thought this place was top notch. I'm from the SF area a place saturated with good shops and from what I learned of St. Louis this the best shop and among only a few good shops in the city. I thought most of the staff was really cool, especially the owner Brad. There is always that one guy at every shop that is too cool for school, but I was treated well. Went to Iron Age for knuckle tattoos & lettering on my hand. Both experiences were great and I absolutely love my knuckle tattoos by Kyle. I would recommend this place as they have high caliber artists who work here and are featured guests at other tattoo shops across the nation. My friend and I were visiting from Memphis. I wanted to take her somewhere nice to have her first tattoo done. I had seen the shop before so I thought this would be a cool spot to have some EXTREAMLY simple tattoos done. My friend chose an outline of heart shaped peace sign (on her shoulder/collarbone area, about the size of a quarter) and I got an outline of the words "gee em" (on my pelvis bone, about two inches across) It started out nice. The staff was very polite and professional. We cracked jokes and talked about tattoos. However, when he started the tattoo...it was a TOTTALLY different experience. First: I am not sure if the tattooer, who's name I cannot remember to save my life (I so wish I could remember because I would tell you guys!), was new...but it was clear he did not know what he was doing. I had two other tattoos (one down the center of my back and one down my side, on my rib cage) done in Memphis before this one. So I thought I had a pretty good idea of what tattoos over a boney are would feel like. NOT THIS ONE! This was one of the most PAINFULL things I had ever felt. It felt like I was getting stabbed. Still being a little bit of a newbie to tattoos, I thought that maybe this area just hurt a lot worse. My friend said the same thing. When he was done the tattoos looked normal. After a few days we went back home and on with our lives. Second: I knew something was wrong when the tattoo started to heal. Unlike my other tattoos, this one started to scab. Not like the skin pealing/normal tattoo healing process...I mean like a real scab. As if I had cut myself. I have taken care of tattoos before, so of course I did not pick at it because that would ruin the color. My friend said the same this was happening to hers. After about the two weeks, I noticed that my scab had fallen off and the INK WAS GONE for the area with the biggest piece! I was like "WTF?!". Sure enough, when I visited the tattoo shop around the corner from my house they told me the tattoo was jacked! Also, some of the ink from both of our tattoos bled, so the outline was not perfect. Mine was much worse than my friends. Third: Now, you can't even read the tattoo without being really close. It's just a lot of scar tissue. You can actually feel the tattoo (No, it's not a keloid. It's a scar.) Never going back there again and I never recommend it to people. I wish I could think of the guy's name so I could just tell them about that one person, but better safe than sorry. read more

Like most people in St. Louis, I've heard Iron Age is the best. I'll have to agree with previous posters that the service leaves much to be desired. My friend and I were in The Loop and we decided to get our noses pierced on a whim. They weren't busy, so we were helped immediately, but the guy was kind of snotty. In a "two boring white girls getting a diamond stud in their noses" kind of way. I have about 7 tattoos, but they're mostly hidden. It's not my first time in a tattoo parlor and I felt like we were looked down upon for not being covered in tats. The price was also crazy high for a nose piercing-$60! I've had my nose pierced before, a few years ago and it was only $40. I asked the guy if they have specials for multiple piercings and he was a jerk about it. " Only if you want to use the same needle as your friend." I know a couple legit tattoo places that have specials occasionally for buy one, get one piercings. It wasn't a ridiculous question. Also the guy was hitting on my friend most of the time ( who was clearly not interested) which was creepy and unprofessional. read more

For my tattoo, I contacted the shop about a consultation. They said that if I wasn't getting a large piece, such as sleeve, that I would just be a one-meeting walk-in. The artist was very impatient and was rather unwilling to work with me on ironing out some details of the aesthetics that I wanted to change from the rough sketch. The artist was unfamiliar with terms that one should be familiar with in an artistic profession (such as "serif" when working with fonts). Overall, Iron Age seemed less of a practice and more of a strict business. If you are expecting the artist to be of any assistance during the drafting stage of the tattoo, take your business elsewhere. read more

I was a walk in on Memorial Day. Came in with a picture of a really pretty tattoo. It was lyrics from a some that means a lot to me. The artist annihilated my leg. Every bit of it was dug so deep and I have a lot of scarring. I was rushed in and out in less than an hour. The tattoo itself looked amateur. There was no artist imagination put into it all. I couldn't tell at first because my leg was bright red. I didn't want to go back and let them touch my leg again. I have since had another shop attempt to cover it and it's still popping through because of how deep the Iron Age artist went. All I wanted from them was my $200 back, yet through all the emails to them of dissatisfaction and the fact that their artist screwed me pretty permanently, they would not do it. Pros of getting a tattoo at Iron Age: - Friday the 13th tattoos are bomb. - The place and practices appear clean. Cons of getting a tattoo at Iron Age: - Front desk staff will scoff at you if you come in with an idea they don't find to be "wicked awesome," completely original, or require them to spend four hours working on you. - You will pay out your ass for sloppy work, (Granted, I have seen some amazing work come out of here, however this was with my experience with a particular artist). - You will get yelled at if you have a small twitch that causes the artist to make a huge mistake. - You will have more mistakes that were not caused by twitches, or anything really other than a sloppy artist. - You will risk a blow out because the artist appears to be in a hurry and decides to ink you with the force of the Hulk. - You will bruise much worse than any tattoo you've previously received and be very whiney for a few days. - You will not get free touch-ups, no matter what the time frame. - You will go back to ask if tattoo can be fixed and be turned down because "it's just bruising," despite said tattoo having been done three months prior. Do yourself a favor and go to TRX. You will save your body, mind, and wallet a wealth of hurt. read more

i got a belly button (navel) piercing from bayle. i'm not from the area, but i've heard many great things so i have it a try. the drive was worth it! the price i would say was pretty average, but i got in there and immediately was brought in the back for my piercing. she was super nice and was super gently with the piercing. i have seen many navel piercing videos where they will tug on and hurt the customer and that was the opposite here! she gave me a packet of specific instructions for after care and it was really nice cuz most places don't have that. i just wish i would've gotten there sooner cuz now my piercing is pink instead of silver like i'd hoped for ! i plan on going back tmr and getting another piercing. :) (also she free hands everything so clamps aren't a thing. meaning : no hard painful pressure of clamps which sometimes are the worst part from what i've heard!) read more

The artist that did two out of the three pieces was very nice and did great work. He also charged an arm & and a leg. The second artist that did my third piece was unfriendly and had an attitude the minute he saw the piece I asked for. Either way - I had them price out a much more extensive piece I had done a few years ago, and they wanted $200-300 per session. I went to Cheap Trx and talked to a cute girl who unfortunately transferred to Chicago. She priced it much lower and did a great job. i got 2 tattoos here, and i think i'm done with iron age. it was a clean place, and the guys at the front desk were pretty nice. the people who did my tattoos, though, were kind of a-holes. the first time i went there, they were pretty busy. the guy who did my tattoo barely talked to me and if i tried talking to him, he would answer me with as few words as possible. maybe he was exhausted from having a busy day, but mostly i just thought he was kind of a tool. same thing the next time i went. i felt really intimidated by the lady who did my tattoo, and she wasn't very pleasant either. well, at least not until she was almost finished. then she got pretty friendly and talkative. my theory is that since she was almost done, she wanted a good tip. also they are reeeeeally overpriced. i guess you pay for reputation and toolbag tattoo artists. basically, if you want a good tattoo and cost isn't an issue, definitely hit up iron age. but if you're looking for a pleasant experience, i'd do your research and go somewhere else. there are plenty of great tattoo shops in the area that are way cheaper with nicer artists. read more
