After reading reviews of another nearby popular u-pick orchard and how terrible the experience has become, we pivoted and found Justus. Super glad we made this our spot - it checked all the boxes. Staff and employees were so nice, helpful, and just treated our family right. The property is great, with just enough stuff going on - and the setting is beautiful. The u-pick was great, the bakery was tasty, and the only downside was that the bar/cider room was closed. Our apples were delicious (mainly Ludacrisp) and I just can't say enough about the family atmosphere they've created here. Everyone was having a good time, so many places for great pictures, and we're so happy to have made memories here.

That kind of history takes work, and I appreciate what Justus Orchard offers as a place to enjoy a little "apple-country" atmosphere. I stopped in wanting local apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple fritters, apple butter, etc... you get the picture. After carefully considering my options, I made the financially responsible decision to buy all of the above. The apple cider donut was fine, nothing that changed my life, but nothing wrong with it either. The apple cider was delicious, granted, apple cider starts with a considerable advantage because apple cider is amazing already, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The apple fritter, unfortunately, was where things fell apart. It was slightly warm, which turned out to be the strongest thing it had going for it. At an actual apple orchard, I was hoping for a giant / ugly homemade fritter packed with noticeable chunks of orchard fresh apples. This landed much closer to a 7-Eleven donut experience for me.. more "apple-adjacent" if you will. I'm an apple fritter junkie and I want the apples to be active participants. Especially when I'm standing in the place where they grow. This one didn't deliver the apple-filled fantasy I came looking for, and quite honestly, I didn't even finish eating it. That's a review of the fritter I ate, not a dismissal of the family's work or everything the orchard offers. I enjoyed the cider and can appreciate the setting. If the apple fritter is the reason you're making the drive, I'd adjust those expectations and stop by for the vibes instead.

Has a decent selection of vegetables and other prepared goods like baked goods, boiled peanuts, ice creams and soaps. Not quite the selection of the Saturday markets downtown and in North Asheville but worth visiting. Give our local food and farmers some love. Last the nearby elementary has kind of adopted it. Go Issac Dickson. Located right at the visitor center and Chamber of Commerce parking lot in back.

Gorgeous plants for sale out front. The woman who works there is super sweet. Ignore the weird lawnmower store next door and swing in here. You'll definitely find something good to take home! They close in the winter. They're just about to reopen for the season, it seems like their season is April - October.

I do NOT eat bologna, but my partner "snuck" a piece in my mouth without telling me what it was....I could have sworn it was high quality ham! OMG! The smoked ham was wonderful, as was the salami too. Got some andouille sausage which we had last night....oh so YUM We also had lunch there. I had their chili, really well made, lots of meat n veggies. Flavor was mild, but nice variety of hot sauces on tables allowed one to vary heat/flavor according to ones taste. I abhor chili with excessive green pepper, but HNG's was spot on. J had the hot dog which, like their bologna, was superb. Also discovered Smokin J's chipotle hot sauce, really nice flavor with medium heat, got a bottle for home. We'll be heading there again soon! And yes, HNG has both a deli counter and small cafe in the primary building, first one you come to on left of driveway.

Their baby chickens were kept in the most horrendously filthy dirty condition; super crowded together, and a lot of the playground equipment looked like it hadn't been maintained properly in years. Granted this happened around 2017 so things could have changed a lot by now but I wouldn't know since I never went back. I want to vote for you Jamie but good God clean this up. This…read morebusiness sits on a very narrow strip of land between the roadway and the boulder filled mountain creek where chilled water pours down from the higher elevations, it's a tranquil setting and the tree canopy provides a shady bank to sit among the massive rocks and listen to nature, depending on the time of the year a passing car may be slightly distracting but those unnatural noises are easily tuned out. You can also rent a picnic table for a dollar an hour if you've packed a lunch or just want to take a break. The old gentleman attending store here passes his time greeting the visitors from his rustic rocking chair near the front entrance he probably won't stand unless there's something to ring up on the antique cash register and it's definitely a cash only business - I noticed a old refrigerator containing tall bottles of pops, the sweat on the glass door seemed so inviting so I grabbed a cold bottle of Mountain Dew and paid the two bucks and threw in an extra dollar for his trouble after he popped the top with the backside of an old church key opener. He mumbled something about having to raise the price to pay for the refrigeration, I nodded and didn't challenge his comment as I put the glass bottle to my lips and turned it upwards. What appeared to be a antique bottle turned out to have glass threads so I guess the distributor has yet to inform him the bottles are all twist tops so I didn't feel I should be the one to break his nostalgic gesture of popping the top although finding this out it did temper my childhood memories a bit. This building is old and it appears it's been expanded over the years although it definitely wasn't last year - this wooden structure seems sound and a nice place to escape the sun and provides adequate protection for the fruits and vegetables. I walked around the areas that were accessible and avoided those areas that seemed to filled with decades of junk and were structurally challenged. I like these kind of places and I think they have a lot of historic value and I don't know the plan when this old man calls it a day but I'm sure it will not be the same. The selection of apples is minimal, I'm sure he buys a few boxes at a time from the local growers they looked okay and I don't know anything about pricing it may be a bargain but not sure what a bag of apples goes for in the area. It was a great place to stop and visit but probably not one I'd frequent even if I lived right down the road...

We were taking a drive along the blue ridge then decided to head into Lake Lure. We found a cute post office in Bat Cave, NC. Once you get to the post, continue driving towards Lake Lure and you will find this place a short distance down the road on the right hand side. They have apple butter, honey, apples, and a variety of other items. The setting is park like along the broad river. You can pay to park there and hang out by the river for the day, or pay by the hour $1 for picnic table use. Parking is free for customers and you can walk down and look at the river/ take pictures and leave for free, but if you linger for too long, parking fees are wanted. This is a quaint shop and the tree covered benches is a great place to stop and have a picnic. Well worth the $1 if you're on a road trip!
