Another five star place offering as I can tell local 100% grass fed beef to its customers. Bone broth , chicken, pork, eggs, and many more items are available in several cases as you enter the store. Head cheese and the bologna I took to eat for second breakfast to eat in car was delicious. I also bought a frozen ribeye steak and 2 chicken quarters to eat at a later date. Cool spot outside of city to visit or eat lunch opens at 10am.

Menu in the deli/eatery of the store. I highly recommend everything on there. Be sure to grab a local beer or cider to Compliment the meal.

I'm a little reluctant to review this simply out of selfishness. You see I love this place and If the word gets out everyone else will too and I want to keep it all for myself. I already know this place is not a secret as many locals and tourist alike have discovered Hickory Nut Gap Farm. Even if you have never been chances are one of your favorite restaurants in town are probably using some of there choice meats in the kitchen. In fact they are known for some of the best meats in town. They are able to prove this, both in their shop at the farm as well as the deli, where you can get some delicious sandwiches and other bites. Each meal I've eaten has been fresh and delicious. To eat local is to support your community. They support all other local entities by selling other wares from local breweries, creameries, ciders and more. If you are fortunate enough make it out to one of the live music events in the barn, it's well worth they few dollars for the entrance fee. If you are bringing the whole family, let it be known there is plenty to do to keep the littles happy. Slides made out of drainage pipes, the tree houses by the creek, and animals to see(as this is a working farm), there will be plenty to keep everyone occupied. I Highly recommend a visit to Hickory Nut Gsp farm... just don't spread the word too much, selfishly...me.

Hickory Nut Gap Farm is a working farm that surprising enough; is not in Hickory. It's in Fairview (take that Hickory), and has a ton of fun activities and a yum lunch restaurant/deli on site featuring sandwiches with pasture raised meats. It's really cute when you drive in; and has two large parking areas. I suggest parking at the large lot on your left that says "parking" (there's another one up closer to the store, but this ones much larger and lets you check out some of the scenery before lunch. Plus; it's a perfect place for the puppers to get out some energy out before you eat. Unless you and/or your dog gets hangry - then I highly suggest parking close to the store and eating first, before your adventures. So, after we parked - the doggo and I walked down to the stream and he splashed around for a bit. On the way up to the store and deli (after some light hearted shenanigans) we stopped so Mrs. Buttersworth* could sniff out the "Party Shed" that (presumably) is available for rentals (considering the large sign on the side of the barn said "Party Shed, Rentals Available". It seemed like a great place for an event because it was covered and shady - and had a built in stage so you can host that hilarious mime performer that no one else in your family thinks is funny; but always hits on your brothers girlfriend. Up the hill there's lots of darling pumpkins for sale out front and scattered around the store - or you can pick your own up at the vast pumpkin patch. Turns out - dogs are not allowed in the store itself (totally understandable) - so I suggest brining a friend to hang out with the pups while you order, pick up your food, and paruse the local yummies for sale. I had initially gone to HNG with the intent of ordering a pasture raised Chicken Salad Sandwich, but they were all out (which is a good sign because it means they don't scoop it out of a tub that's been hiding in the freezer for the past six years). Instead, I ordered a Cuban Sandwich, and a Strawberry Rhubarb Soda to drink. The Cuban was made from pastured pork and came with a side of nomz chips that tasted homemade and were very crunchy. The sammich itself was delish and filled with fresh tasting pork, pickles, and yummy cheese (the traditional Cuban stuff). The (also homemade tasting) mustard gave it a nice kick. To top it off - the bread it came on was crunchy and grilled to perfection. My Strawberry Rhubard Soda from Waynesville Soda Jerks was extremely yum, not too sweet - and had the just the right amount of Strawberry, as well as Rhubarb flavor. If you do decide to order something sweet to drink- I suggest not sitting by the "Bee Observatory". A highly intrusive bee kept landing on my soda; and hanging out on the bottle like he owned the place. (Ok; I'm not gonna lie - it was pretty charming.) Our favorite part of lunch (and the farm in general) was the adorbs Farm Dog that kept coming over to our table and brining Mrs. Buttersworth* a stick, which was completely adorable and very smooth. (I usually introduce myself to people I like by not making eye contact and mumbling something awkward under my breath as I trip on the ground, while walking right past them.) PS; he has has a total crush on her now. Anyway, after a fun lunch - lastly, we checked out the mini corn maze to make sure there wasn't a miniaturized Jack Nicholson hiding in there. (The coast was clear, just FYI; but there was a very pretty sky in the background to be seen.) Before we left Mrs. Buttersworth* & I took a much needed zen moment on the small bridge over the stream... staring out into the vast unknown; and pondered the meaning of life. Ok - to be fair; he was gazing and I was shouting at him to pose on his 'good side', while pasesbyers shot seething glances in my direction as I screamed "to the left Mrs. Buttersworth* - more to the left - that's your better side! We need more light!!" On that note - for all of you that have been following me (us) for a while, I'm proud to announce Mrs. Buttersworth* has been invited to walk in Paris Fashion week next year. *names have been changed for anonymity

This is a not-to-miss side trip from Asheville! Seriously, every single time we go to Asheville, we're sure to stop at Hickory Nut to stock up. It's in a little town called Fairview (near Looking Glass Creamery, also worth a visit!), only 15-20 minutes from Asheville. If you're going back to Charlotte afterwards like we do, you can also take a pretty route home that winds you down 74 into Lake Lure/Chimney Rock without adding too much time to the trip. Throw a cooler in the back of your car and spend some time shopping their little market. They always give us ice for our cooler, btw. We usually take home skirt steak, ribs, ground beef and hot dogs. They have a wide selection, so I'm sure you'll find your favorites, too. The quality of their meat (especially the fresh/not frozen items) is unrivaled. They recently opened a deli counter that serves a great lunch. Along with lunch -- I had an amazing bowl of chili last time -- we've also picked up some amazing pastrami and bacon ends there. So, don't forget to browse up there when you're shopping, too. Before you leave, check the ice cream selection. If they have the bacon flavor, do yourself a favor and get 2-scoops!

I happened upon this place while traveling between Lake Lure and Asheville, the small roadside signs scattered along the highway caught my eye as I maneuvered through the switchbacks. Once you turn into the drive it less than a quarter mile to the Farm Store on the right, once you exit your vehicle you'll see this is much more than a farm store it's a working kitchen and butchery filled with lots of farm to table options. There's quite the selection of organic products as well as grass-fed beef in a variety of cuts. The shelves are filled with salsa and jams as well as cheese, cured meats and sausages. The staff here is friendly and very helpful even though these types of stores seem to turn into roadside attractions and are filled with tourist making the staff at a lot of places somewhat lackadaisical but that's not the case here. The place is fill with lots of positive energy and the smokey aroma will have you drooling - now if once thing rings clear in all the farm stores I've had the chance to visit it's the pricing, don't expect deep discounts here the products are of very high quality although I'm sure there are times when they mark the perishable items down. Don't forget this is working farm so there's lots to explore and don't forget to grab your free meat stick with your YELP check-in...

Lots to see and do here as well as purchasing items at the farm store - Barn dances to baby chicks! They have special events for children. What s great way to see all the animals and enjoy some fun outdoors!

This is a great local shop where you can get locally raised meats and awesome sandwiches. We love to come here when we are in need of some quality meat for a dinner with friends or family. The price is a little high but that can be expected from a smaller farm that really cares for their animals. Check out their deli. They always seem to have a good special that is going on and also have a great place to sit outside if the weather is nice.

Cute goats

Ahhhhhmazing! What a cool farm and loved the fact they had some fun stuff for the kids to do as well. Hay rides and a little slide, super cute. We got to watch them feed some of the baby animals... the goats were so cute. Now let's not forget what we came here for... the meats! We got some filets, a whole chicken, beef jerky and more. Everything was beyond delicious... and knowing where it was raised was even better. This place really takes pride in what they do and you can tell from the moment you get there. Staff was super friendly and helped us pick out the best stuff. Even had to come back by on our way out of town to grab more jerky, the best we've ever had (shhhh don't tell my dad he thinks his is the best). Will be back in Asheville in a month and plan to stop here as soon as we land. Great job guys!

Stopped here on a beautiful spring day to check it out. I decided to eat lunch and was happy I did. I had the Poutine (lard-fried french fries, smoked pulled pork, brown gravy, cheese curds & herbs). The pork was extremely tender. I do not remember the last time I had pork that tender before. I wish there were more cheese curds though. Especially for $12. I picked up some of their eggs, chorizo and breakfast sausage. They sell other local products as well. Everything is a bit pricey in my opinion but it's nice to splurge to support local artisans. They have picnic tables outside to eat at and slides for the kiddos. This is a great place to check out anytime and have a nice lunch and to pick up some yummy meats!

Berries field

Located 20 min away from Asheville. Nothing crazy with a few pigs , chicken house and 3 goats. Berries field is cool for children. $9 a pound.

Local milk ice cream.

Headed out here in search of ice cream and found an awesome farm store with loads of meats and animal products. The staff were super friendly. Always love an outfit who uses compostable disposables especially when you can see they are making and using their own compost.

Chicks

This was a cool place to come. Despite the rain and the mud, this was awesome. You can see the baby cows, chicks, and goats. The cider produced on this farm is top notch. Sadly we arrived to late to have eaten at the Deli. From what we could see there was a birthday party for children going on with pony rides. If you want to support a local business, this a great way to do it.

What can I say? They have the cutest goats!

See all

Pricey, but a very interesting store for such a small town…read more But Hot Springs is a stop-over for both the Appalachian Trail hiker types AND folks treating themselves at the resort and spa and getting IN to some hot springs. So a spot to get geoduck in a time...or a $10 thing of hummus...or fancy frozen pizza....or a single $12 crab cake....is actually pretty on brand! I actually stopped in here several times during my week-long stay in town. Primarily because Vaste Riviere is one of two food spots open every day of the week, and the only one of those two with available outdoor seating. My first visit resulted in the purchase of some dip-type thing to bring back to my Airbnb, a six-pack of beer, and a crab cake. The crab cake was good but I forgot to get any utensils, and whoops....the cleaning crew for my Airbnb arrived AFTER I did, where I intended to eat my meal. So I sat in my car and ate my food with what I could find to use as a sort of spoon... I returned on another day because I wanted a cold beverage after an unexpectedly long hike, and I wanted to drink it outside...so this place was my only option. I also got some pimento cheese dip to bring back to the house with me. Which was...ok. Not the greatest, but y'all...the closest true grocery store appears to be, like, a half hour away. The staff was always lovely and friendly. I would have come back here even more times, if their goods were a little more in my price range or...you know, sometimes after a hike all you want is a burger, not a crab cake. But I like this place, was surprised at its existence, and would certainly recommend it to other folks.

Not only do that have interesting options, all of the prepared items were VERY good too. I felt that the quality was excellent and better than the restaurants in town. The entire concept of this store is pretty interesting. I'd imagine Vaste Riviere has low and high days like most businesses. So, by offering these pre-made items, it allows them to have a broader menu (and probably avoid wasting food). Most of the items are available in the deli case for takeaway. You can heat it up easily or have them do it. Also, in their freezer cases, they have an assortment of local food items. For instance, we got a NC-made Kimchi and it was great. They also have items (i.e. gluten free) that you probably couldn't find nearby. Overall, I'd highly recommend Vaste Riviere if you are spending some time in the area. Great option for a takeaway meal in your cabin or room. Also, with the COVID-19 situation right now, they seem to have it under control and are taking protective measures. Support them!!

I saw many items that aren't available locally and many foods that are advertised as being organic. The produce looked super. As a matter of fact the entire store was neat as a pin! Now many of the food items for sale are unforgivably expensive and made my OUCH meter explode! I didn't see a single good deal today. Perhaps good deals are not the main focus of Whole Foods. However, the produce area is underwhelming and the fruit and vegetables on the shelves weren't very fresh. I've been back several times and never see quality produce. The store is so busy, I set the month trial for the delivery service on top of my Amazon Prime. I'll tell you Walmart+ and instacart have better delivery services. I guess Whole Foods doesn't use insulated bags for delivery and every frozen item was thawed. Every single time. It was a huge hassle getting refunds or replacements. The combination of attentive service, high-quality steaks, and a standout bourbon selection makes it a spot worth seeking out in Valdese.[1][2][3] ## Service and Hospitality Austin provided friendly, knowledgeable service, with spot-on recommendations and consistent follow-up throughout the meal, which really elevated the evening. The staff quickly seated the party of four and acknowledged the celebration for the wife's birthday, helping the night feel special from the start. When one filet needed a bit more sear, the owner personally stepped in, oversaw the re-fire, and had it returned to the table cooked perfectly. That level of ownership and responsiveness showed real commitment to **hospitality**. ## Food and Preparation Entrées arrived beautifully plated and cooked to appropriate temperatures, which is especially important at a butcher-driven concept known for its meats. The corrected filet came back with the ideal sear and doneness, reinforcing confidence in the kitchen's skill.[2][1] Portioning and presentation aligned with expectations for a farm-to-table steakhouse, highlighting the quality of their locally sourced meats.[3][1] ## Bourbon Library The bourbon library is a major highlight, offering an impressive selection of hard-to-find bottles that adds a distinctive draw for whiskey lovers. It pairs perfectly with their meat-focused menu and makes Highlands Butchery feel like a destination, not just a neighborhood spot.[4][1][2] Having such depth behind the bar also supports Austin's recommendations, allowing guests to explore pours they may not encounter elsewhere. ## Atmosphere and Noise The only real drawback of the evening was the room volume, which made conversation a bit challenging at times. Given how popular and lively the space can be, some additional noise baffles or acoustic treatments could help deaden the sound and make the dining room more comfortable without losing the energetic vibe. With that one improvement, this experience would easily move from a 4.5 to a full 5 out of 5, especially given the strength of the service, food, and bourbon program!
