Iowana is an old school family resort on Portage Lake between Leech and Winnie. It is family owned and operated and its clear they really enjoy having guests. It always seemed like the Brad and his father went the extra mile every chance they could.* Honestly, the only other time I was met with such prompt and accommodating service was at a Four Seasons.
However, please don't confuse Iowana with the Four Seasons. Some cabins are newer than others and some have better amenities; all of them are well equipped with full kitchens and linens. The website has exceptional representations of the accommodations and should set your expectations.
When we stayed there, I could not believe the number of children from 5 months to 11 years old. I guess it is not surprising given the number and quality of activities for kids. Every night there was something going on. The cool thing is that the events made room for kids and adults alike. I think it is a testament to the owners again. They really strive to accommodate everyone.
The activities were held mostly at the lodge which is a throwback to old school fishing camps that popped up in the first half of the 20th century. Given that the lodge was the center of the action, it was exceptionally easy for us to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature by walking the nature trail, watching the sunset on the dock, sitting on the porch.
Portage Lake is really pretty much undeveloped except for Iowana and a handful of houses. I think because it is surrounded by bogs and dense Chippewa National Forest, that it would be expensive and difficult to develop. Also, it is in between Leech and Winnie and may simply be overlooked. I would have expected better fishing action, however, my den is not exactly covered with trophy walleye and some large fish were landed while we were there.
Canoes, paddle boats, and kayaks were free to use. Fourteen and sixteen foot aluminum Lunds were inexpensive rentals. There are pontoons and a bass tracker for daily and weekly rental too. The beach is nice and there is a ton of playground equipment.
I found Iowana to be an exceptional value and we will be taking our kids back next year (and year after?) as they get older and can enjoy the activities more.
* We left a baby blanket that Brad sent back to us before we even realized it was missing. A slight discrepancy on the bill was met with only "How much do I owe you?" and then Brad reaching into the till for the refund. Also, a handful of little requests were met without fail, without question. read more
