Sigh. If Chase on the Lake was a stone's throw away from my unruly Silicon Valley home, I'd be here and I'd be learning how to jet ski just for that. This hotel is part of a historic landmark in Walker, Minnesota. When you are visiting and folks ask you where you are staying and you mention, "Chase on The Lake" , their response is always positive - like "wow, that's a really great place!". I never got any, "Wow, wait until you're awake in your room at 3 AM." or anything of that sort. Situated on along Leech Lake and in the middle of downtown Walker, it's very easy to come down and take a walk around the area. I stayed in a room right above the restaurant on the first floor, with a lake view (every hour is a different "wow" as the sun makes its way around the lake). It's rather convenient staying in that room because one can always check out the restaurant deck by looking out of the window (in case it may be crowded). You can walk down the stairs from there to the restaurant / deck. Just be aware of their hours as the door at the end of the stairwell will be locked when the restaurant is closed. There is always another way to the deck and that is through walking out and by the side of the Copper Spa building (road leads to the dock too), which is still a part of the hotel. Parking in front of the hotel is ample but there were weekdays where it seemed like there were a lot of cars - must be because it was in the summer and people just love the lake. Going back to the spa - they aren't open daily. There is a pamphlet by the front desk for the spa. I made the mistake of assuming they're open daily on the week and missed out on a potentially soothing deep-tissue massage (or pedicure!). There is a little pool where kiddie birthday parties are often held. Speaking of front desk, they're always very cordial EXCEPT for this young man during this one evening who looked like he couldn't care any less about guests coming in or out - I figured he may be new or just tired of life (at 18 LOL). My room was clean, well-equipped with the basics like a hair dryer, microwave, a fridge and bathroom toiletries . The housekeeping does not come in on a daily basis. They're on-demand. You take your bag of trash and leave it outside your door and the housekeeper will pick it up in the morning. The shower water is warm enough and just right. Despite being a very old hotel, my room did not have any of that old and musty "odor" , not even the hallways nor the stairwell. The TV, however, was pretty complicated, standard and nothing like the Marriott, etc. where the TV was smart, HD and easy to navigate. It wasn't a very big deal though, but it's always a plus if the TV was HD and smart nowadays. I must say, this review is a nice suggestion for a bedtime read at the Chase on the Lake, because at this point, I'm so sure you'd have snored off. I hope the pictures entice you though! read more

The Chase is an old hotel that was rebuilt and remodeled over time, sitting right on the shore of Leech Lake in the center of Walker. It has a bit of the vibe of the hotel from the Shining, with rumors of ghosts (but no redrum or twin girls on trikes, as far as I saw.). Your expectations will likely determine how you like this place. First, it is not a modern business hotel, so you shouldn't expect a good desk to work on, well placed outlets, good lighting (2 bulbs in the room), or daily housekeeping. That being said, the rooms were clean, the bed comfortable, the cable has lots of stations (but no on screen channel guide - my current bane), the bathroom amenities were good (nice towels). I had no hot water wine morning but that was fixed later in the day. I didn't sample much food, but the servers and bar tenders were all friendly, as was the front desk staff and basically everyone else. There is an indoor pool and a well equipped game room, poorly labeled as Chasers Alley due to its former use as a bowling alley, and allegedly hoist friendly. The location is great to walk everywhere in downtown Walker, so it's perfect for that. I do recommend this place, but you should know what to expect. The location is perfect read more

Never been very impressed with this place; it always feels "in transition". Like someone leases the space from the hotel or it just can't get the right help. Definitely over priced for the experience & good quality- most often, but have had a couple ok meals here. This time: only 6 Tables of Guests - More than 6 staff members on duty and they still can't meet the basics of service. Soup came out cold .... Twice. I don't know if it's management or available pool of servers in Walker MN. Train them. It's like they themselves have never experienced hospitality, so they don't know how to provide it. Lots of room for improvement. Rude hostess. The manager DID step in to try to make things better, but the most obvious remedy of removing the soup from bill did not occur to either server or mngr. It's just a struggle, so take a chance, nice view and share good visits too, I sure will if I have one read more

We have been visiting Walker for many years as we have family who own a cabin in the area. We have a large family reunion every two years and this year was my family who were responsible for hosting it. We originally made our reservation block under the previous ownership and then after it was sold, I reached back out worried that everything was lost. Israel was SO accommodating and helpful, ensuring everything stayed as it was and we had the room block we originally had. Fast forward to our stay and the accommodations were EVERYTHING!! The ballroom for the weekend for our family activities, to the pool and beach, to the onsite 502 Restaurant, you can see how much effort Israel puts into his hotel and making a new name for itself! Our entire family thoroughly enjoyed the reunion weekend and everything about Chase on the Lake (and downtown Walker). I'm pretty sure the next family to host has already made the decision to come back here again! I went here in 2015 and had a great time. I don't think there has been any maintenance since then, and it's really starting to pile up. First off, the signage is inadequate. We were very confused at first when we entered what appeared to the main door and there was no office at all. There is no sign at that door indicating that it's building two. It took us a good five minutes to wind our way back. When we tried to get out to the beach from our room at the far northwestern point of the hotel, the signage was so inadequate that we finally got outside at the very east part, along 5th street, at a door that is definitely not supposed to be a main exit. We then had to cut through the back yard of the "condotels" before finally making it to the backyard. On the way back, the only door that was open led right into the restaurant, so that was awkward too. I found a review from 2020 that mentioned the smell in the elevator. We didn't go in the elevator, but we definitely smelled something in that area by the Pepsi machine, and I think it might be the same one. I don't know how any employee can walk past that and not do anything. Our room had no bathroom fan. There's a grate where you would think the fan is, but no way to turn it on. The only switch in the bathrooom has numbers ranging from 50 to 90. We tried both and found no difference. The air conditioner is insanely loud. We set it to 66 and it ran constantly. We would've had to turn our tv up to the point you could hear it in Brainerd. We did not do that. Eventually we had to compromise and set it to 68, which still led it to run about half the time, thus indicating that the main heat in the hotel is set way too high. But still, this shouldn't be a problem if the units are maintained well. We did not go to the restaurant aside from cutting through it, because it's got the lowest yelp score in town. Now, some positives. Number one is the view. Our balcony was a great place to relax and take in the lake. The beds are good. We had a chaise lounge and that's pretty fun. We had no issues with check in, check out, or parking. Being within walking distance to the shopping is nice. read more

I really liked this place. The room was dated but modern. It was very clean and had everything you would expect in a hotel. The bed was comfortable over my 3-night stay. Housekeeping was very good. Check in was no problem and without delay. The hotel had many amenities for the rainy days that you are stuck inside. The place had a restaurant that was good in many ways. Food and dining experience. The outside summer dining option offered great views of the lake. Place is close to downtown Walker and the bike trail is right out the front door. I love how this place is so welcoming and unique. I truly feel like home and everything was perfect and clean. We even had a note next to our bed from the House Keeping. Of all the places I have stayed, this is my first welcoming note. Whoever left that was a genius. The food was superrrrrrrrr delicious. Our waitress was very attending and recommended things in the menu that was off the hook. She by the way got a $30 tip which is double the amount of 15%. And the best part was the live music. He entertained the crowd very much. The result of his music got people to enjoy their meal and even dance on the floor. I plan on visiting again. A job well done everyone. read more

I booked a 4 night stay and explained I wanted privacy and included a note stating my wishes. The front desk person Carson was amazing during check-in and was very respectful of my wishes but the next morning, the owners decided my note was "suspicious" and called the cops to remove me! I was respectful and treated with horrifying behavior from the owners and management of this company. I thought having a solo trip by the lake would be the perfect way to recharge - but I was removed by cops after sleeping there one night. I called several times to understand why they did this and my calls have not been returned. Would NOT recommend. read more

Was looking for a relaxing spa weekend in February. Did not get that. The spa itself was lovely. The hotel was not. There were groups of screaming children running up and down the hallways all hours of the day and well into the night (after 10 pm). The hotel staff did nothing to stop this behavior. The pool was unusable due to the amount of children in it and their behavior. There was hardly any parking, even for guests staying at the hotel with reservations. All of the parking was taken up by snowmobiles and large trucks with trailers (I assume hauling snowmobiles). I have no intention of returning to this location. read more

We just returned to the cities after a very disappointing July 4 weekend at Chase on the Lake. Location of Chase is fabulous -- however, it's time for an update to the condo accommodations. And the cleaning staff either needs to be trained or fired. Dark brown carpet is nasty and in need of replacement. Bathroom sink drained slowly after hand washing or brushing teeth. Goldfish crackers and empty soda cans underneath the bed and sofa (did they even vacuum between guests?). There were smudged fingerprints on the refrigerator and the sliding glass door. No soap dishes in shower or in bathroom. Toilet seat was broken and slid when you sat down. Would be nice to have counter-height bathroom counters. Our meal at 502 was horrendous. Terribly slow with drinks and food came out individually instead of for the entire table. (Walleye cakes were excellent, BTW, however bc everyone had finished eating, I took them to go to eat in the room). We paid ~$1700 for 5 nights. Cleanliness should have been a given rather than a nice to have. Will likely not return to the Chase. read more

I am updating my previous review and removing a star. We contacted Chase on the Lake a couple weeks ago to make a reservation for August 2022. We spoke to Victoria who was great to work with. We had needs for a microwave, fridge, and coffee maker in our room and she helped us find one that would accommodate that. She quoted us a price that matched what was showing online for that type of room (Classic Studio w/ 2 Queen beds - $169/night), so we booked it. She advised us there would be a $50 booking fee and we would received an emailed confirmation for the reservation. After a few days, we had not received an email confirmation, nor had we been charged the booking fee, so we called back. The person that answered stated our email address was not listed on our reservation, so she entered it and said the confirmation would be on the way. Again, no email or charge. We called again and spoke to Sarah who was very kind and doubled checked the email address and ensured we got the confirmation while we were on the phone. After review of the email, we noticed their was a price difference in what we were quoted. It was showing at $199/night, we also still had not been charged the $50 booking fee. We called back and Sarah advised us we would need to call and speak to a Manager in the morning. We decided to look around in the meantime at other lodging options in the area and found a private residence to book instead. We just had an uneasy feeling after the initial booking issues, so we felt it best to move on. We called the next morning and cancelled our reservation and immediately received a confirmation email of the cancellation. There was a link in that email to let them know why the reservation was cancelled. We attempted to do this, but when the link is clicked it says "An Error Occurred...link not found". Soooo here it is in a Yelp review instead. I'm sure this is still a lovely place to stay and the staff was very kind, but when it comes to accommodations, I like things to run smoothly and this had too many speed bumps from the start. read more

A group of us do Happy Hour at Chase a lot. Very disappointed that HH prices were discontinued and the wine they have gone to is Cupcake. Not as good as previous wines . Food looked good, menu seems about the same with a bit higher prices. Still a beautiful setting, very friendly wait staff. But guys up your wine menu! Our room wasn't very clean. We found Cheetos on the floor and still inside the couch. There is plaster missing from the wall. Plus tonight we went down to the bar and tried to play music on the juke box and they wouldn't turn it up. What a disappointment. If we are paying so much money for a great experience and I fill like we didn't earn it. Night two stay, we notice that when we take showers in the walk in shower the whole bathroom gets wet! My youngest felled and chipped her chin open on the skin....it was a good size wound. I went and told the desk that they should think of something to help with the water and the guy said that's why we have bath mats. No shit. I had a bath mat down and towels covering the floor to help soak up the water. The toilet was covered in water too! Plus there was no shower shelves to hold soaps. Not impressed! read more

Stayed here Thurs night with a Groupon. The staff was friendly upon check in. I had actually called a few times between making the reservation and calling with questions and spoke to Luke. A very chipper friendly chap. The room was nice with a lake view. The hot tub and sauna were nice and relaxing. The cold water plunge pool was a nice quick dip too. Unfortunately the pool was kept a little too chilly for anyone to want to swim in it. The morning complimentary breakfast was decent. They offered mini muffins, cereal, yogurt, mini bagels, bread and waffles. For beverages there was coffee, oj and 2% milk. All of this is in a little kitchen room with a couple of tables so it can be a little crowded with other people in there. It was a nice resort and a cute little town. We made a stop at Leech Lake Brewery on our way out of town for some growlers of his beer. Good stuff, I recommend stopping!! read more

Chase on the Lake was once a great resort. Recognizing that some people prefer to pay a bit more for higher quality service and amenities, they had a great little business going. But on our most recent version, it became clear that they now rely on charging resort prices for motel service. The restaurant has become remarkably average. The spa was not able to accommodate a walk in guest. The coffee shop wasn't open the entire weekend we were there. The hockey players in town for a tournament played hall hockey until late in the evening right outside our room. Basically, the relaxing weekend we sought in booking a stay at Chase died not at the hands of one major blunder, but rather a thousand tiny cut corners that appear to have been done to save money. I get that business is tough, and corners sometimes need to be cut. But next time I am going to follow suit, and just stay at one of the other area hotels where I can expect a better price for average service. read more

This was mine and my husbands first visit to the chase. And the stay was not at all pleasant. The vibe of the hotel has got an old time feel which I do like. I asked about check in over the phone. A man on the phone said 4pm. I did ask if there was any chance of checking in earlier. His response,"no". They do allow pets for a $50 pet deposit. Well my husband and I left our dog with a friend in the area. The hotel has many things wrong with it. Food was not good, lamps don't work, rude staff, TVs don't work, elevators are super slow. I was also charged an extra $20 that they never told me about nor was it on there website for incidental charges. That's fine but I would have liked to know ahead of time. They stated they would release it back to me in a few days. I was definitely not happy with our stay. For $120, I was greatly ripped off and disappointed With this place. Broken hot tub, broken sauna, filthy pool with a broken ladder and the elevator was broken! That was real fun hauling all our stuff down the stairs at checkout time. Because of covid 19 we had to set our garbage out in the hall. No problem, I understand that. But, our garbage sat out for over a day. Plus, we had to get a new pool key card every day we wanted to use it. Why???? That makes no sense to me, even with covid 19. I wish that I could give 3 and a half. The soup, Kobe burger and appetizer was very good. The service brought it down a point. We were a party of 10 and only had 1 waitress. If I had not reminded her of my iced tea, half way through the meal, I don't believe that I would have received it at all. She took it to refill it and I never saw it gain. This is an old and famous restaurant for Walker. It burned down and was later rebuilt. It is well designed with out door dinning available ( but not for our party as 10 is too many.) We had two fantastic meals overlooking the lake in the 502 restaurant. We stayed two nights recently and paid extra for a lake view, which was in fact attainable by stretching my neck very close to the window. Front desk attributed it to some "misdesignation" of some rooms. It is an historic building so it is old. It is is not clean in terms of the woodwork, although the room was comfortably clean. Nicely located in downtown and nice walking trail very close. Also oddly, the bathroom floor tile was missing grout entirely which must be some new trend or the grout got ugly and they yanked it out? I stayed for a conference, and was blown away by the views and the room. The hotel is right on the water, which leads to some incredible views (see attached picture). The rooms are rustic, spacious, and the beds are incredibly comfortable. The staff is very friendly and goes above and beyond with every request. If you are a hipster or someone who likes to party, this is your place. If you are looks by for peace and quiet (like we were) this is not for you. Between the so-so housekeeping to the skull pictures hung in every room, to the loud band thumping the walls until the wee hours of the morning, it wasn't the most optimal choice for unwinding after a long week at the rat race. The front desk staff and others we ran into were super nice. The lobby was clean and the water was beautiful to go sit out on the pier and watch. It wasn't a complete bust. The Loon Lake coffee next door was smooth and tasty. The shops on the main drag were in close walking distance and we found a couple treasures. Overall, we give it a C. read more

Exceptional place to stay!! We came for Valentines Day and had a fabulous condo. This little gem in Walker is one we will return to time and time again regardless of the season. They really play off the historic features of the building in and around the whole property. I really can't think of anything that we didn't like. Every single thing was perfect. The gal at checkin was informative and anytime we needed something staff was there with towels and things we asked for that most places wouldn't help with. Thank you housekeepers!! The city of Walker has so much going on all the time. We live in an area with a higher population and can't believe how many things there is to do in this town that our city doesn't offer. There are so many little antique shops and boutiques as well as a brewery and about 10 other places to eat without having to drive to get there. LOVE IT. Terrible service and not as advertised. I booked a bluewater cabin ( #103) with Chase on the Lake. These are cabins that are about 3-5 miles down the road. The resort seems nice - we had a decent dinner at the 502 restaurant. Our server Lavelle was great. The problems started before checking into the resort. I was under the impression that our cabin had 2 bedrooms with a loft and that it slept 8 people (as advertised). I learned before we arrived that it is actually 1 bedroom + a loft and that it still sleeps 8 people. We are 2 families so it was important to me to be able to sleep one family upstairs and the other downstairs so I asked the resort how we could accomplish that. I was told a roll away bed could be requested. Upon arrival I requested the roll away but was told after 2 phone calls with Lacey at the front desk that a roll away bed just isn't available at the BlueWater Cabins. I asked to speak with the manager, Cody, and was told he would call me back to find a solution but he never did. Additionally, there isn't enough patio or dining seating for 8 guests (this is the amount of people they claim to be able to hold in this cabin). My 7 year old son was also on the rug in front of the sofa and had an old fish hook from a previous guest lodge into his finger. We were not off to a good start. Unfortunately, the management staff did not decide to address our issues and now it is midnight and the pull out mattress which should be inflated has no way to be inflated and there are no extra sheets for the pull out bed. We were told we would have to drive 3 miles down the road to retrieve them ourselves. Some kind of service! Call me crazy but if you advertise a cabin a place that can sleep 8 people - it should have enough beds to do so. 3 queen beds doesn't accomplish that. PS as I'm writing this review we have now discovered the sliding door will not lock and we cannot secure our door. I'm not surprised. Very shoddy service and the cabin was not what it was advertised to be. read more

This is our second time staying at the chase. We got a great deal online and decided to do a mini family vacation. We had a king suite with a full kitchen. House keeping didn't check the fridge before hand and had the previous guests food still in there. There was a broken pot, a broken knife and the coffee pot was also broken. Probably things that should be checked. We were told when booking there was no bathtub in the room, which we were disappointed because we have a toddler. Only to find out there is a tub there! Check your receipt! The great deal I said I found online, they tried to charge me more and the front desk person wasn't aware of the deal. Another worker had to inform her. That would've cost me another $100. Other wise it was a great couple days. The spa was great. Felt like a princess! read more

A Girl's Night Out Review by 2 opposite eaters From the "Fussy and Finicky" Eater: When we got to the restaurant, I was impressed with the view out the windows... beautiful view of Leech Lake! Wish we could have sat on the patio, but it was too windy that day. The server took a little too long to get to us, but we were pretty patient. Then when the server took our order, she didn't write a thing down... that always concerns a fussy eater! When you ask for special things, like easy on the ice in your Pepsi or no veggies, you wonder if she'll get it right! I ordered the 8 oz Sirloin Steak with mashed potatoes and a salad. Dinner started with a salad, requesting only lettuce with French dressing for this fussy eater. No croutons, tomatoes, cukes or anything else! Lettuce was fresh and dressing was sweet and yummy! Then came the sirloin steak and mashed potatoes. I asked for no veggies, but they gave them to me anyway, so I gave them to Flexible Carol who will no doubt review them herself! I ordered the sirloin, (which by the way is not my favorite cut), medium rare, and it came almost medium rare. Just good enough to not send it back. The steak was not tough, had pink in it, and the seasoning was just right... not too salty or over spiced. The most surprising side on my dish were the potatoes... I hate lumpy mashed potatoes... OKJ I will say it.. I hate real potatoes solely for that reason... THE LUMPS! I hate lumps so much that I mostly eat instant mashed potatoes... take me back to the 70s and 80s when most restaurants served instant! Anyway... these potatoes even had the skins in them, but they were so smooth and creamy! Very pleasantly surprising! How did they do that??? Bottom Line? I will be back and try the Prime Rib! From the "Flexible and Fun" Eater: The atmosphere on a summer evening is perfect. Windows lining the restaurant give a breathtaking view of Leech Lake. The 1920's décor is tasteful and elegant with rich, dark woodwork. As I entered the 502 through the bar, I was impressed with the high-top marble counter that filled the length of the area. I had made a reservation, first requesting the patio but no seating there because of the wind, so I requested a table near the window if possible. The host said she would try but no guarantee. When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly full, so our seat was in the middle of the room, but our view of the lake was still great. We waited about 10-15 minutes before our server attended to us, but once she did, her attention was good and consistent. I ordered the grilled shrimp dinner with wild rice and sauteed vegetables. It did not include a salad, so I ordered their house salad in addition. Within a few minutes our salads arrived. Mine was generous, fresh, loaded with raw veggies and the raspberry vinaigrette was tasty. Just a few minutes later, the entrees arrived. Mine was hot and fresh. The shrimp was grilled to perfection, but slightly plain and lacking a bit in flavorful spices. The wild rice was also hot, but on the plain side too, lacking in a robust flavor, so for this flexible but fun eater, I prefer a little more crunch and pizzaz with some extras such as walnuts, cranberries, and onions. The fresh veggies (squash, peppers, and onions) were sauteed to the perfect crispness. Our server gave us just the right amount of attention and conversation with a genuine, pleasant manner. So for fine dining along the water, rich ambiance, and a classic menu, this is a good choice. read more

I am posting this with a good knowledge of the history to this hotel, My grandma ran the kitchen while my mom was a waitress for the restaurant here. That was all before the building burnt down, which we sat across the street to watch, so sad. At first I wasn't sure about such a big business coming into our little town and remaking the Chase, but it has brought many tourists to the area. The three stars are for the great views, nice rooms, and amazing staff, the reason it didn't get 5 stars is because they tore down my favorite restaurant pepper's for small over priced condos. Another thing that was terrible is the new restaurant the 502. Although it has a great lake view and great service, the food is over-priced and tasteless, and the few good items on the menu were stolen form some of the local restaurants struggling to stay in business. The last thing I have is not to big, but could be taken very badly. First you must no that the old hotel was for sure haunted, everyone knew it. But now, they are trying to scam people to come by telling them that the new building is haunted with no proof or even stories to tell of it, and to me that seems very shady. read more

I walked in expecting luxury and got something straight out of the early 90's Like has not been updated since at least then.The website advised a room that I most definitely did not get. The room was dated we walked into a tub full of water from a leak followed by a broken hairdryer. The bowling alley was closed because you guessed it broken. The restaurant/bar had hours that did not match the advertised hours or what the front desk told us and closed early. The pool had no adult hours so it was crawling with children. read more

We stayed in a 2BR suite which was quite spacious and comfortable. Was a good value, clean and new and the kitchenette with full-sized refrigerator was handy when traveling with family for the holidays. read more

In its day it was probably better because the location is beautiful. However for the price it is a disappointment. The decor and old wood is very beautiful and some areas you can see were at one time top of the line. But it seems to me there is a lot of differed maintenance that is extremely apparent. For instance the grass areas are weeded and flower beds often partially dead. Sprinklers broken and water spraying Istraight up and not into yards or flower beds. The first thing after entering there was no one at hostess stand. It took 22 minutes for someone to finally come and check us in..They all seem to hang out behind doors until you ring a bell for help. Staff seemed to us on more than one occasion to simply be there and not at all engaged in customer service. Seemed they really didn't care. Going into the very slow elevator it smelled bad. Can't say what the smell was, just stale. Somewhat weird since so much cleaning is going on in places and so many places just feel so fresh. But the entire three days the elevator smelled. Not unexpected there was no breakfast . Grab and go and they have a good supply of foods. Disappointed again at the dining room which could be good. Seemed dirty and fish shoveled. Bartender women were ok at best. Served you once you tracked them down. Happy hour good. 3.00 wine per glass despite a poor choice of wines. About as bad as you can get other than Barefoot. Pretty low quality of wine. We had a fishing guide and an afternoon fishing trip. We got back and quickly changed our clothes and went to get food and a drink. Everything closed. Even the bar. There was not anything Open and we tried to order a pizza but couldn't find anything open. Finally found that Bensons pizza was open till 10:00 pm. Too late that night but had pizza there a different night and it was excellent. First night I had a hot shower. Getting hot water is not always easy at The Chase. I tried a bath at 9:00 pm tonight and only lukewarm water. So I got out. The other frustrating thing was:! Because we were hungry and looking for anything, take note. Vending machine for snacks is on 3rd floor and drinks on 4th. Also lots of chit chat and hallway conversations make sleeping in to 7:30 Challenging. Kids ran up and down halls and lots read more
