This year, we decided to try Barney's Resort & Lodge. The cabins were extraordinarily nice for the price! They were immaculately clean and looked like they had just been built. The living quarters were spacious and inviting. I enjoy cooking and very few cabins offer the kitchen amenities that the cabins at Barney's offered. The cabin we stayed in featured a gas range, full size refrigerator and almost every cooking utensil you could ask for including a full set of kitchen knives (which were razor sharp) and a crock pot! It is very nice to be able to cook what you want to without fretting that you forgot something important back home. Most "resorts" feature only 1 or 2 canoes that are available on a "first-come, first serve" basis. Not at Barney's! In addition to at least 2 canoes that I saw, there were also half-a-dozen kayaks including a DOUBLE kayak! This was especially convenient as there were 3 of us and 3 people in a canoe doesn't work out too well. This was perfect since it was exactly what we wanted to do all weekend and we never had any trouble getting access to this equipment. Barney's water access takes you to Little Sand Lake and Sand Lake with connections to other lakes in the chain. The area is strikingly beautiful with plenty of places to explore. Also, there were bald eagles everywhere - we actually lost count of how many we saw. We spotted numerous eagle's nests in trees just off-shore and eagles often flew over us as we navigated the waters. The only "negative", if there is such a thing, to Barney's is that the area immediately surrounding the cabins is not very rustic. However, the great value, fantastic accommodations and water access easily make up for this. I would highly recommend Barney's for your next "up north getaway!"

Not your parent's "Mom and Pop" resort...thankfully!…read more We had a truly enjoyable four nights at Loon Point. The clean, VERY WELL maintained cabin included a warming fireplace, crispy clean bedding, all required utensils and virtually instant hot water in the shower and kitchen. The grounds provided space for casual walks (escorted by hummingbirds and chipmunks). Fishing was good and the lake scenic thanks in great part to limited development. As important as anything, Loon Point's owner/operators were not only visible, but helpful as well. Loon Point provides lots of lessons for owner/operators of "Mom and Pop" destinations who believe they'll stay in business by doing the "same old thing." It's just not gonna happen.

There are different sized cabins to accommodate various sizes of families and we were able to rent four cabins all in a row. The resort is very family and kid friendly - plenty of activities for littles with a playground, beach area, pontoons for rent, fishing stuff, etc. The cabins are comfortable but still feel like you're in the woods and the porch area is definitely the best part of the space - coffee on the porch looking at the lake was just awesome! Lake views, fire pits, picnic tables - all make it feel very up-northy. There is a little lodge down by the beach area where too can buy a limited assortment of snacks as well as toiletries that may have been left at home. They have pizzas, arcade games, and free popcorn and coffee too. Wifi was super strong throughout the resort! A few minor things that I didn't love: - The beach area is pretty weedy which contributed to swimmers itch for a few of us but the kids didn't seem to mind. - There isn't really anywhere to walk for exercise, just the dirt roads but no paths or anything. Flies were terrible when I tried to walk anywhere! - Porch furniture wasn't super comfortable and we spent so much time there that it would be great if those chairs could be upgraded! - The tap water tastes and smells irony. We chose to bring bottled water to drink just because of the taste. One of the best parts was taking the pontoon out to what we called 'secret beach' which was a really nice sort of sand bar that was a short ride away from the resort. A true mom and pop place! If you are looking for something that's a bit rustic but still comfortable, this is a good choice. Nothing fancy but that's the way it's supposed to be!

We stayed in the "Big Log Cabin" and I have never stayed at a nicer cabin anywhere. The cabin was neat, tidy and extremely clean. There was a nice big table and a very modern kitchen which is great because I do all of the cooking for the group. The cabin had a really nice porch and an amazing view of the lake. The grounds of the cabin also featured a charcoal grill and a fire-pit which I prefer since I enjoy cooking over wood. From our own private dock, we used the resort's canoes and kayaks and explored the lake chain connected to North Star Lake. North Star Lake has numerous loons and when we were out in the canoe, at one point we saw 7 of them all at once. When they started calling and singing to each other, the entire lake echoed from shore to shore with their hauntingly beautiful songs. Later that evening, one of the loons swam near our private dock. We went out to watch it and the loon did some sort of "water dance" that can only be seen to be appreciated. I found the owners of the resort to be friendly and accommodating. The resort is well kept up, the equipment is in good shape and it is obvious that these people care. I would highly, highly recommend this establishment if you are looking for a relaxing, up-north getaway with modern facilities yet maintaining a true outdoor experience.

They have free use of kayaks, canoes, water toys and swim platform. They have their own private boat launch. Great owners. Planned camp activities change weekly and they post a schedule. GREAT ice cream in the lodge. Has a guest laundry, fish cleaning house and they sell bait, ice and small snacks/pizzas.

Over the 25 years we have been coming up here, the property continues to be updated but always retains the same feeling it gave me when I was 15.
