Where we live in Northern MN, the restaurants are pretty spread out in this area. When going out to…read moreget a bite to eat, whether it is for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and wanting to go some place different, we know we will be going for a car ride to one of the nearby small towns or to a resort that serves food. We don't mind the drive as it is beautiful country up here. Also, we will definitely be eating with the locals. So on Mother's Day, we decided to drive to Squaw Lake and eat at The Hill. It is about 30 miles away from our home. We arrived around 7:10pm. When we walked in, no one greeted us, no one was seated at the bar, but there were about 5 tables with customers. We caught the attention of the waitress and asked if we could sit anywhere. After seating ourselves, we waited another 10 minutes to get a couple glasses of water & the menu. One waitress finally had to ask the other waitress to wait on us. She did so with a smile and was friendly. Around 7:30pm, our order was taken. J ordered the Chicken Cesar sandwich with seasoned waffle fries. I ordered a beef taco salad. And then we waited....and waited. Almost an hour later, we got our food. Luckily, J & I were enjoying our conversation before we realized it was taking quite some time for our food to be served. When our food did come out, it was hot, good and we enjoyed it. Then the wait started again to get our check. We finally lost our patience & J had to seek out our waitress to get our check. She must have been back in the kitchen so J talked to the other waitress. By this time there were only 5 of us diners in the restaurant. They had also been patiently waiting for their food. On the other hand, there were about 20 people at the bar now, drinking, and watching the MN Wilds playoff game. I'm not quite sure what the issue was with the service but it was bad. There were about 25 diners in the restaurant with 2 waitresses and they weren't able to handle it. Maybe part of the problem was delays in the kitchen with the cook, maybe short staffed but there was never an explanation given when we asked. It is really unfortunate as our food was good and the restaurant is nice, clean and has a northwoods decor. When we had interaction with the waitresses, they were always very pleasant. Maybe it was an off night, maybe their service is always slow, but if you decide to come here to eat, plan to wait.

Met family here as a half-way point. Staff was nice, food was pretty good…read more Staff was friendly but somewhat inattentive, especially considering there weren't very many other people even there. Prices were about as expected. Lots of Taxidermy animals here to look at. My boys were fascinated, but some may be bothered by it (I hope not if you are in the middle of nowhere in northern MN, but I mention it)....

Barney's Resort & Lodge

Every year I go up north with a couple of buddies to canoe/kayak the beautiful lakes of Minnesota…read more We have stayed at a good number of resorts. This year, we decided to try Barney's Resort & Lodge. The cabins were extraordinarily nice for the price! They were immaculately clean and looked like they had just been built. The living quarters were spacious and inviting. I enjoy cooking and very few cabins offer the kitchen amenities that the cabins at Barney's offered. The cabin we stayed in featured a gas range, full size refrigerator and almost every cooking utensil you could ask for including a full set of kitchen knives (which were razor sharp) and a crock pot! It is very nice to be able to cook what you want to without fretting that you forgot something important back home. Most "resorts" feature only 1 or 2 canoes that are available on a "first-come, first serve" basis. Not at Barney's! In addition to at least 2 canoes that I saw, there were also half-a-dozen kayaks including a DOUBLE kayak! This was especially convenient as there were 3 of us and 3 people in a canoe doesn't work out too well. This was perfect since it was exactly what we wanted to do all weekend and we never had any trouble getting access to this equipment. Barney's water access takes you to Little Sand Lake and Sand Lake with connections to other lakes in the chain. The area is strikingly beautiful with plenty of places to explore. Also, there were bald eagles everywhere - we actually lost count of how many we saw. We spotted numerous eagle's nests in trees just off-shore and eagles often flew over us as we navigated the waters. The only "negative", if there is such a thing, to Barney's is that the area immediately surrounding the cabins is not very rustic. However, the great value, fantastic accommodations and water access easily make up for this. I would highly recommend Barney's for your next "up north getaway!"
