I called the office and was referred to Susan, who offered to walk me through the process over the phone. Still, I was not able to get access. Now, here is the very amazing thing. Sensing I was still frustrated, she offered to have me come in and she would help me step by step. I told her I'd be there in 10 minutes. She was actually waiting for me at the front desk when I arrived. This woman was incredible. She was so kind and patient and calm, which is exactly what I needed today. Susan was able to spot what the issue was, which allowed me to access my account. Problem solved. Susan didn't send me a link to click on or a toll free number to call. She just sat down and helped me. She didn't judge me. She didn't make excuses. She saw I had a problem and knew I needed her help. West Des Moines Ob/GYN is a world class medical practice of experienced doctors and nursing staff that has provided my medical care for over 20 years. I can't imagine going anywhere else. But, today, I needed Susan in billing.... and she really came through for me. I wish I could return the favor to her. If you are new to the area or if you are thinking about making a change, you will not find a better provider in central Iowa. And, for you ladies in Ankeny, they have a new location there.

I have been driving approximately 2-2.5 hours each way from Omaha, Nebraska to this clinic for months. I've never had a problem with anyone in the office, always paid my bills, followed their recommendations, and have been a loyal patient. Last week, I missed an appointment because I was sick. Since the office is closed on Fridays and weekends, I called first thing Monday morning and explained the situation. I told them I was already on my way and simply wanted to know if there was any chance I could be worked in. I made it clear that I understood I did not have an appointment and was willing to wait in my vehicle for hours if necessary in case an opening became available. The front desk informed me that they could not guarantee I would be seen. I said I understood and asked if the doctor could call me back. When I arrived at the clinic, I was stunned to find police officers waiting for me. I was then informed that I was banned from the practice. I never threatened anyone. I never raised my voice. I never caused a disturbance. I never demanded treatment. I simply drove to the office and asked if there was any possibility of being worked in after missing an appointment because I was sick. After months of traveling hundreds of miles, spending thousands of dollars, and supporting this practice, being met by police officers and permanently banned was one of the most bizarre and humiliating experiences I have ever had as a customer of any business. If this is how a long-term patient is treated for asking to be worked in, prospective patients should be aware before choosing this clinic.

I then called Iowa Radiology to send me a bill, and they couldn't for over a week because they only get their mail picked up twice a week--what business, especially a bill dept., only have twice-a-week mail service? They take the time to get a history and do a thorough examination, and make sure you get the appropriate care you need when you need it. If you are moving to the Ankeny area and are looking for a practice you can rely on and trust, give Mercy Briarwood a try. I have AGS. My levels are .32; anything over .10 is positive so mine are nearly three times the…read moreminimum positive result. The Public Health nurse who called me said I should see an allergist and get a prescription for epi pens because AGS is weird and even with low levels I could have an anaphylactic reaction (and as it turns out the absolute gastrointestinal misery I went through that spurred me to get the testing *was* a form of anaphylactic reaction). Unfortunately I chose this place. Over $600 to be told the AGS levels on my blood test were "likely a false positive" and therefore no Epi was prescribed. Visit notes list several things that were not actually done and says I likely have "food intolerance", not an allergy. Completely disregarded the fact that AGS is a reaction to a SUGAR molecule while the limited scratch tests he did on me check reactions to PROTEINS (which is why they are NOT reliable for testing for AGS). Did NOT prescribe an Epi for me, so I just starved my way through a two-week camping trip for fear of potential reaction. My visit notes also suggest a "pork sausage challenge" at the office over 4 hours to rule out AGS. That's NOT the way AGS works. With AGS you can eat something one time and not react at all, and have the exact same thing two days later and have a bad reaction. It's a crap shoot. It's just plain dangerous to suggest to someone they're not AGS based on the fact that they don't react within a few hours to *one* in-office challenge. What happens when someone celebrates with a nice steak dinner because this doctor said they had a false positive, and they wake up in hospital or worse because *that's* when their body decided to react?? I also do NOT appreciate the complete lack of transparency with respect to pricing. Prices and fees should be clearly communicated BEFORE testing so the patient can make an informed decision as to whether to proceed. I feel like the over $600 I was charged for this one short visit with minor testing was a massive overcharge. I won't be going back.
