This is my first time trying the buffet at the Iowa 80 Kitchen....... Pulled an all nighter, trucked in, experienced one of the better designed showers on the road and decided to sit at the kitchen restaurant. Holy smokes! Reminds me of Knottsberry Farm Broast Chicken from back in the days when we'd host our Varsity Southern California CIF post season banquet and of all the choices ..BJs...California Pizza Kitchen...etc...they decided Knotts..but the chicken was excellent! And I would pass up Church's Chicken for the fried chicken here at the truck stop. Mash potatoes, Baja chicken soup, baby back ribs, Meatball marinara ... Well executed***make Shamrock and Sysco proud! However the beef on the pot roast tasted like it was drenched in baking soda and experienced velveting overdose. Overall service was excellent. Basic diner. They offer a buffet option but, I had a taste for a loaded potato, vegetables and 6-8oz steak. " The oz may be wrong but it's been a while. "Steak & Potatoes!" We tried the buffet and it wasn't anything too fancy. It wasn't horrible though. Everything we tried was freshly placed on the trays, which were tasty. The desert choices weren't great though. The muffins tasted stale, but the scones were nice. I honestly think they were all from a box. I cannot confirm that though. Another thing that was a bit frustrating was that our server cleared our table when we went back for seconds. I questioned if I went back to the right table. I think if we go back, we will probably just order food instead of the buffet though. read more

Our server Jennifer Lewis was AH MAZING! We had only a short time to grab breakfast but she made us super comfortable and kept our coffee cups full. We loved the coffee. Truly delicious The servings were plentiful and tasty. Buffett looked good...even an omelette station. We opted for "My Usual" and a Full Order of B&G. Eggs were not quite as I like them but I am super picky. The bacon though was on point as were the hashbrowns. They also had whole grain wheatberry toast with actual butter not the liquid chemical stuff. We would definitely eat there again. Oh it was all very clean too! Above average truck stop eatery. Has a buffet that I wish was better stocked so I ordered off the menu. I had the Meatloaf with mashed potatoes and cottage cheese. Meatloaf was hit and tasted just like home. Mashed potatoes were a little runny but still tasted alright. And cottage cheese was probably just out of a container anyway. The service was excellent. While visiting the world's largest truck stop I thought that I would do lunch in the I80 restaurant because the on line videos looked ok and nothing spectacular but it's for the experience. They have a full service restaurant and a buffet that you can choose from but the buffet would be out because I don't have a big appetite and I fill easily. The buffet looked decent with bbq ribs, fried chicken, sides, salad, sweets etc. The menu boarders perfect because it's not huge but it is well planed out with what they offer from breakfast, lunch and dinner which made it hard to choose because it all sounded good. The meat loaf with mashed potatoes and potato salad sounded really good so that's what I ordered. My food came quickly and it was not hot but luke warm and looked good. The meat loaf was savory and very tender with big chunks of onions half cooked with a slight crunch left in them. The mashed potatoes were a little loose for my taste because I like them thicker but ok. The gravy was weak flavor wise with no richness/big flavors but plentiful. The roll and tub of butter I didn't even eat because that's not me. The potato salad was one of the worst I have because the flavor was off putting and not enjoyable because it had a sharp flavor. Overall my lunch was pretty much what you would expect for truck stop food and average but satisfying for meat loaf and mashed potatoes, comfort food. read more

My wife and I both ordered the buffet dinner. The salad bar was alright. On the entrée side, the mashed potatoes were good, but the mac and cheese was outstanding, possibly the best I've had in a restaurant. The popcorn shrimp was good. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It reminded me of a long-gone chicken restaurant in southeast Kansas that served incredible fried chicken in the 1960s and 1970s. My wife had room for a slice of pie, which she thought was quite good. I had a small cupcake and a tiny brownie, both of which were very good. Our server, who was very friendly, checked on us several times and kept our drinks filled. If we drive through eastern Iowa in the future, we will definitely stop here. read more

Me and Becky go here EVERY TIME we pass though! She absolutely Loves the Ham and Cheese Omlette and I get the French Toast. Also, they have ALL THE TYPES of Smuckers Jam on the table, for whatever you want on your HEAVILY BUTTERED toast. The highlights include quick service (quicker than most of the traffic on the interstate LOL), and a great view of the trucker shop in the rest area. Tonite was The Best Pork Chops... double thick yum. Had mashed potatoes n peas with one lil ole chicken wing. That was dinner. We were hungry. Had soup with a nice salad and strawberry jello cream cup. Perfect!! Now gotta drive to Omaha.. wah wah wah. Till next time. The menu is kinda boring. Like 5 potato options lol. Not bad food. A bit on the salty side. I've had the Turkey dinner on one occasion. That was the salty one. The special Italian Sausage spaghetti on another occasion was just blah. The fried chicken was probably the best out of the 3 meals I've had there. The macaroni and cheese has black pepper in it. It shouldn't. People can salt and pepper their own food. The dinner side salad was surprisingly really good. Service is hit or miss. No waitress has ever asked me if I would like dessert. read more

I don't do buffets because if food sitting around a long time getting yucky and cold. And in truckstops you never know if you're gonna end up very ill because, well you know! Had the biscuits and sausage gravy. Wow. The biscuits were very good and the gravy actually had lots if sausage and nice sizes chunks. Much better than most places I've been, even in the South. Oh and the gravy wasn't that gooey crap most places will give you. The scrambled eggs were good and so were the peaches and the waitress, Lauren A was a great waitress. read more

It's a pretty nice good looking restaurant. Our waitress was super nice. The food price was a little bit higher than normal (like IHOP/Denny's). The food came pretty quick. A ribeye steak was very tasty except it wasn't very salty. A loaded potato was very tasty. Coleslaw isn't that tasty like you usually think it taste. Which is like 15 mins. and got ready to eat it was so awful you could tell the roast beef came out of a can and was very pink like not cooked. It was the grosses thing I have every ate. I have had your roast beef sandwiches before this was not it. There was only a little bit of mashed potatoes. My family always comes there on xmas eve to eat and never had thus. Went to the restaurant for breakfast. the service was slow but they were busy so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I ordered the corned beef hash and I was specific about wanting it cooked light. it arrived very dark. I asked the waitress about the way it was cooked and I was told that is the way it is. No effort was made to fix the order nor was any adjustment made to my check. Additionally, I couldn't even get a refill on my drink. I usually leave a $10 tip for my meals but this time I only left my plate of food. I have eaten at this restaurant many times in the past but this time may change my opinion about returning. After a long day on the road, this was a much needed stop. When wife and I decided to get a nice sit down meal, instead of fast food, we were nicely surprised by the I 80 Kitchen. We opted not to do the buffet. Though it certainly looked awesome, we just weren't that hungry. We were told to sit anywhere, so we picked a booth (very comfy by the way). Our very bright and cheery waitress came over and greeted us and introduced herself almost immediately. I ordered the Bacon,mushroom, Swiss burger. My wife ordered the meatloaf sandwich. The coffee was stellar, and my burger & fries were large and incredibly delicious. My wife's meatloaf sandwich(I'd guess was 1/2 to 2/3 pound)was a closed face sandwich, smothered in extremely tasty brown gravy, along with a big mound of mashed potatoes. I used some of her gravy to dip my fries. I thought her meatloaf was among the best that I've had in any restaurant. I thought the prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. I REALLY WISH this place wasn't 500 miles away...... I'd have a new hangout if it was in my town. BRAVO!!!!!! read more

Yep I would say about 3 stars is right on point. Boyfriend and I ordered ribeye steak, pork chops, and both had the add on salad bar for $3. The ribeye was very tough, disappointing for $29. The pork chops were amazing, juicy and cooked perfectly, wish it had a little more salt. Came with 2 thick pork chops for $19. Broccoli and rice were pretty overcooked and mushy. Salad bar was a little small, had the basics, the ham and bean soup was delicious. We ordered an apple pie for dessert with a scoop of ice cream on top, and the pie wasn't warm. What is the point of paying extra for the ice cream on top and you're not even going to heat the pie? In general, the menu seems a little overpriced for what you get. I don't mind paying $29 for a good steak, but I do mind if it's chewy. It seems very hit or miss, some items are good, some items are not. Missed the mark on some minor details such as not warming the pie, and not providing new dessert spoons/forks. You wanna charge steakhouse prices then you should provide steakhouse quality food and service. There is a buffet option which seems very budget friendly $11.39 breakfast, $13.99 dinner, however I didn't try it because a lot of reviews mentioned the buffet was not good. I'm a truck driver and have had many a buffets at numerous TA truckstops. Beside the TA in Alberta Lea which by the way is the best in that nation this place is a solid buffet. They kept it well stocked and the meats were nicer cuts. Baby back ribs and thick cut pork chops. I ate here twice in two days and both times left happy. Nice place. while I come through Walcott Iowa often I know the Iowa 80 truckstop like the back of my hand the world's largest.. I know out there by the shop at where the fuel Island building is is where you'll find the blimpie sub counter.. previous experiences in the past years have led me to be a little skittish of the food served here sometimes there's a lapse before I come back into the restaurant.. most of the time they're what's for breakfast what time allows and I decide to come in to have a sit-down meal.. I did notice it's been about eight months since the last time I came in is definitely cold in the winter time but the restaurant seems to have gotten a little bit better the large buffet at least it breakfast time was very well freshly stocked and very nice-looking although I have seen prior reviews and pictures online that sometimes the lunch and dinner can get a little lax and it starts to dry out and gets funky... some of that I would write off to past servers. my server was very good in professional nice girl the other one seem to have quite good attitudes also which was a nice thing.. so I had it a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs sausage links wheat toast and instead of hash browns I opted tomatoes. so this review is only for the Iowa 80 kitchen not the whole truck stop that's different reviews for different areas cuz it's so damn big.. I do like the gas pump Globe displays way back in the day prior to the probably the early fifties that's how the gas pumps used to be the brand whether it was a Sunoco or citgo World anyting mobile with the famous Pegasus horse you always seen a globe on top the gas pump globes.. highly sought-after after collectors in good shape.. here they utilize lights inside of them for like chandeliers very creative very cool.. restaurant was quite clean when I came in and I finally got a chance to get some decent pictures without a bunch of people all around the 1939 international pickup they greet you as you walk in.. restored very nicely been brought over probably from the Iowa 80 truck museum which is a whole different experience and review and itself.. but most people that came in to eat when I was there were quite satisfied you didn't have that look of disgust on their face they were enjoying their vittles which is a good sign that they did a good job.. actual rating 3 and 1/2 stars but worth rounding up for not down read more

3 1/2 stars is probably a little more accurate, but we don't have that option now, do we :-) There are a few things that made me go with a four, instead of a Three Star review. First, the restaurant was absolutely spotless. We were there at the height of lunch rush time and employees were constantly cleaning. There is a stereotype of truck stop restaurant is not being the cleanest, but this certainly is not the case here. Second, the employees were without exception and extremely pleasant and friendly. They really seem like they enjoyed their work, and that they appreciated our business. That goes an awfully long way in today's market. Lastly, the breaded tenderloin was a real tenderloin, not a pre-processed fritter. Hi marks for that... Perhaps not the best tenderloin I've ever had, but certainly above average. My wife had a lunch buffet, and it looked tasty, but there was nothing terribly adventurous... Just good old Midwestern, down home cooking.
