    Bathroom decor was lovely
    Havolin T.

Wow, wow, wow! I was treated like royalty from the moment I walked in to when I left. Grace and her lovely assistant were so nice to me. I not only came to get my hair done, it was a whole relaxing experience. I'm just sorry I didn't get the assistant's name because she was so sweet and hospitable. I was greeted promptly and had my coat taken from me, which was nice. I was sat right away in the stylist chair. A few minutes later, Grace, my stylist came to greet me. I came to get balayage and she asked me for a picture. I showed her and she promptly when to work. The only criticism I have is that I wish the consultation was more in depth, like ask questions about my hair and things like that. My hair was curly when I came in so she did a quick straightening so she can start the coloring service. Grace works super quickly, her hands were flying all over my head. She works super confidently. During this time, I accepted an offer for coffee and kept myself busy reading some work I had for class. Not much small talk was made but I honestly didn't mind. I was doing my reading and a talkative stylist doesn't make or break it for me. Grace did offer me a conditioning treatment as an add-on service which I accepted. And boy, am I glad I did! It came with the most incredible scalp message I have ever received by her assistant. I almost fell asleep at the sink lol. I also got my ends trimmed because I needed to and again Grace did everything so quickly. While she was drying and styling my hair, parts of my hair had looked super brassy. I pointed this out and Grace offered a free retouch without hesitation. It looked like half of my head was orangey in tone and I was shocked at how nonchalant she was being but it turns out that the chair was awkwardly placed between two different sets of lighting. Once I looked myself in a different mirror, all was good! But , I was grateful for the offer of the free retouch, which wasn't necessary after all. I was also offered a complimentary shoulder massage after she was finished with my hair. The balayage, haircut and deep condition with olaplex came out to about $250 before the tip which was reasonable to me. I actually enjoyed getting my hair done. The salon itself is clean with minimalist decor. Bathroom was clean as well. And there were little details throughout the salon that makes it clear that a lot of effort was put into the place and guest experience. I would love to continue to support this business.

    Highlights and lowlights by Grace!

I read the reviews and I agree ! Grace and her assistant Wendy are sweet, personable, talented, and professional! And my hair looks great! Grace talked to me and asked questions about what I was looking for, and thought with me about options! Thank you Grace and can't wait to see you soon!!

Loved my entire experience from beginning to end. Grace is an expert at what she does and I will be returning to cut my hair. Both my mom and I went and were delighted with the experience. Please confide in her if your hair is damaged and needs a great cut, I promise she will not do you wrong. It is worth the price. She also has the besttttttttt lady who does manicures and pedis on Fridays and Saturdays. Simply, the BEST. Accompanied by great massages and relaxing experiences - this place is a woman's spa all in one.

Grace offered me a neck massage at the end of my cut! And her assistant Angelina gives bomb head massages during shampoo. Need I say more? But really, Grace is talented at haircuts and runs a super cute shop in a pretty Inwood enclave. It feels like you're part of a local community at the salon. A client/friend of hers even stopped in for a coffee and hello during my cut. Bottom line--she gave me the shag I hoped for, and everyone remotely uptown should support this small, woman-owned business!

Botched ends (after I had color fixed!)

Grace botched my hair cut & color. I asked for a shoulder-length cut with soft waves at the bottom. (My profile photo is the cut & color I went in asking for, it had grown out and I wanted that same style & length again.) She first cut the length too short (she agreed & apologized when I said something) and then ... I don't know what she did. During the blow out, I told her it was looking soccer mom-ish and she said I'd asked for layers and that the blowout was creating that look. I left as quickly as possible (paying the balance for a total of $198.00! And a generous tip for her and her asst, mainly because I was in a daze and upset and didn't know what to do and just needed to get out of the salon) and wet my hair as soon as I got home (while crying) to re-style. That's when I got a better look at the color, which was a mousy brown with highlights, very bland and unflattering, a color no one would ever ask for or purposely want. I called my old salon (I tried Inwood Hair Salon bc I was hoping to have a new place in the hood) and flew down there in a cab for color & cut correction. After it was re-colored, my stylist there had to straighten my hair with a flatiron just to get a proper look at what had been done. Needless to say, we were appalled. There were "chunks" of hair missing on the sides and the back looked like it had been cut with an ax with three or four uneven, chopped layers. When I emailed Grace all of the above, she wrote me a lengthy letter back saying I'd asked for layers and said I was up for something new with both the cut and color. She said she'd spent nearly 3 hours (it was 2) of her busy time on my hair and therefore would not give me a refund. We have different takes on what was said, but the facts are clear and proven in the photos attached: The color and cut did not look like what I asked for. Beyond that, the color and cut were bad. The cut especially was completely botched. I did not want my hair shorter than my shoulders -- she cut it shorter and then it had to be cut even shorter when fixed. Hair is more important to some than others. It is extremely important to me so this has been a truly awful experience. I'm sad (my hair is ruined!) and angry (it will take 4 - 6 months for Grace's "layers" to grow out!). It's a nice looking salon. There was coffee & almonds. Grace was very nice, as were her assistants. They give you lots of scalp and neck massages. But the actual work done is truly all that matters.

Let me first be clear. I hate getting my hair cut. I only get it done twice a year because the thought of trying out another salon, another stylist, gives me anxiety. I experience what Cory Matthews refers to as the "Haircut Cycle of Shame". "Every time I get a haircut, it looks terrible for about six weeks. Then it looks good for, like, a day, then it's time for a new haircut. It's what I call the "Haircut Cycle of Shame." I went to Inwood Hair Studio after reading so many stellar reviews, but was still skeptical, because, truthfully, I don't get good hair cuts. I arrived a bit early, I was offered water and waited patiently in an adorably decorated, making me fearful for the final price type atmosphere. Grace arrived and immediately introduced herself, very friendly, very inviting. I explained that I just got a cut 6 weeks ago, and was so terribly unhappy with it that I'm going for another one. The process began with an incredible shampoo, head massage and all. And then for the cutting - the staring at the mirror, hoping with every snip that this is what I asked for. There were several moments of hesitation and worry, but the final product was beautiful. Exactly what I needed. And if a beautiful haircut from the perspective of a terminally fearful of salons anxiety freak isn't enough, she even gave me make up tips, did my brows and gave me smoky eyes (my first ever). Then she ended with a quick shoulder massage. All this for only 40 bucks. Give your business to Grace. You won't regret it. Let the Haircut Cycle of Shame conclude.

Gorgeous cut! She barely took any length off and gave my hair such a beautiful shape.

Like most of the girls writing reviews here, I hate getting my haircut. It terrifies me. I haven't gotten a haircut I've liked in the two years since I left my beloved stylist behind and moved to NYC. I've walked out of salons in the city in near-tears with a $150 dent in my bank account. Not fun. On top of bad experiences, I'm also in the middle of growing my hair out for the first time since I got it cut into a short punky style back in 2003. I think anyone can understand my apprehension when I took the plunge and made an appointment to get a cut--were my months of trying to grow my hair out going to go to waste for the sake of cleaning up split ends and hoping for a more cohesive style? I decided to try my luck at Inwood Hair Studio after reading the all stellar reviews, and I was not disappointed. The salon is chic, clean and inviting: really cute decor, lemon water, ice tea, coffee and snacks available, and nice ambient music. Grace did an incredible job on my hair. I'm at such an in-between stage as I grow it out that I really couldn't tell her much about what I wanted, other than asking her to cut off as little as possible and to fix the mess that was seven months of growing out a short cut. There were definitely moments where I was afraid she was taking off too much, but all my fears evaporated as soon I saw the finished cut. I absolutely love it! It barely looks any shorter and it has a beautiful flow now. I seriously felt like I was in some shampoo commercial as I was walking back to the train--it was bouncing and everything. I 100% recommend going to Grace. I haven't been this happy with my hair or a haircut experience in so long, and Grace is such a sweetheart. She knew exactly what to do to revitalize my cut and it's obvious she's a natural when I comes to hair. On top of that, the cut was only $40, plus $25 for a blowout/style (she straightened my hair), which was completely worth it. You also get and super-relaxing scalp massage while she's washing your hair and an amazing shoulder/neck massage at the very end. I'll absolutely be back!

Update on the cut! Styled with my curling wand!

Grace has done it again and worked her Magic. Came in last minute for my trim and consulted her on the color. My hair has grown a few inches but has had some torture from the curling iron and blow dryer so it was clean up time. This time around I asked if I could bring in my dog monkey (small 7lb Maltese) since he had been stuck in the apt all day and grace and Kimberly welcomed him. Nonetheless haircut done and was perfect. Re layered the front for body and the color looks updated even though we didn't do anything to it. Love grace and Kim for their hospitality. And the neck massage...even more amazing. Thanks again grace!

Appointments became rushed, started late, and lacked even basic professionalism. You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. Updating this with a pic and additional NYC HAIR SALON SEO terms so future customers are warned since the salon has decided to block me after no satisfactory resolution. The pic at the top right was me pre-hair f*** up. Only come to this salon if you'd like to come home and cry.

Super easy and convenient. My stylist was Senait and she was fabulous! I showed her pictures of my past haircuts I liked and she did a superb job recreating it. She was friendly and talkative without feeling like she had to talk to me the entire time. She did a fantastic job and I will absolutely go back to see her again. The whole appointment (wash, cut, dry and style) took about an hour and cost $95 (I have relatively long hair, I believe they quote a price range to account for length). The salon itself was busy and a bit loud. It is very bright (likely because they do hair and makeup) and felt more like a party rather than a relaxing place/spa. They have a ton of staff so I was taken back right away. When I went, both men and women were there for haircuts and someone was getting their makeup done. I would absolutely go back and go to Senait again.

I came in for a trim, and discussed with my hair stylist that I wanted to mostly keep my length and…read morethe long layers. Before starting, we both agreed that the length was good (she'd just trim split ends) and that she'd reduce the layers I already had. She ended up cutting a lot more than we agreed, and I have lots of layers (more than before, that feel a little choppy). This isn't what I asked for at all, and I'm especially unhappy because we agreed on what to do before, and I mentioned I have a family wedding coming up and I wanted to make sure my hair is what I wanted leading up to it.
