Bill from Interstate Flooring was weird, unfriendly, did not listen, and should absolutely not be a customer-facing employee for any company. Bill visited my property in the late summer of 2023 to inform options involving reuse of existing plank flooring (that I already owned), and the installation of a small section of new flooring (about 80 sf). When Bill showed up at my house he seemed possessed by wicked chip on his shoulder. It was difficult to get him to listen, and he had a very hurried manner about him as I showed him the area where I wanted to use the plank flooring and the area where I wanted other flooring. He then simmered down and listened and it seemed like it would be fine to do what I was requesting. He shared that the cost would be "well over $2000" (note, other quotes I received had been $800-$1200). When I told him his quote was far higher than those I received from other similarly sized companies he just would not accept it. I had to remind him that I already had 80% of the material in posession. His reaction to why his price was so high was that his company "pays their employees EXTREMREEEEEEMLY WELL". (He put an excessive amount of emphasis on the word 'extremely' and even shook his head around while saying it! I wish I was recording the scene so I could post it on the Internet.) I could not believe the behavior of this man. I was gobsmacked. So, because he seemed hopped up on too much caffeine and absolutely unwilling to recognize the ABSURDITY of his behavior and the price he quoted, I needed to just cut to the chase and so I asked him if my job was too small for his company. It's a legitimate question, because many companies in Portland are busy with multi-story condo buildings, making small residential jobs like mine not worth their time unless they inflate their prices. His response was that my job was not too small, and he repeated that his employees were paid "extremely well." Then I said "I can show you the quotes from the other companies I received". He refused my offer and instead left the room and said (with attitude) "well, I can't win them all". read more

I like to support small, local businesses. I certainly don't enjoy leaving negative reviews. But I must warn others to avoid this business. I hired Interstate to provide and install a carpet runner on my wooden stairway. They scheduled an appointment to measure for the runner, and no one showed up. We rescheduled, and again, no one showed up. When we called, the owner, Debbie, came and did the measurement. This was in January 2020. We didn't hear much, so after some prodding on our part, they scheduled the install for mid-March. Covid hit, and things were shutting down just before the install. We asked them to delay. We called again in late June and after several more calls, we were scheduled for July. Lo and behold, there was not enough carpet to finish, either because Debbie didn't measure correctly or didn't listen to the clear and simple guidance we gave about what we wanted carpeted and why. Over the subsequent months, we called Interstate regularly for updates, and they only initiated contact with us once. We were patient, considering the pandemic and the many complications it has caused for everyone. At one point, the owner Debbie told me we were lucky to be able to get the same product to finish the job, because the company had discontinued what we needed. After one last-minute installer reschedule, the installers were set to come in November. This time, the carpet runner was the wrong width. Interstate was closed and no one called us the next day to follow up. When I called the following day, Debbie rushed me off the phone, did not apologize, and said she needed to speak to the installer. Another 24 hours passed before I called again. This time, Debbie continually made excuses, changed the subject, and failed to take responsibility for the situation. During the conversation, she admitted that she knew the new piece was the wrong width, but had expected the installers to fabricate it to appear as if it was the same size as the rest of the runner. This would not have looked good: this is a carpet with a printed pattern on it, similar to a rug. This conversation it clear she was untruthful previously when she told me she was lucky to be able to obtain the same product, despite the fact that it was discontinued. When I asked why she never told us of this complication or her proposed solution, she had no response. When pressed, she admitted this was something that she "probably" should have told us. She agreed with my assessment that the situation was "extremely unprofessional". I've done MANY home improvement projects with many companies. When someone is working in your home, professionalism and integrity are just as important as the level skill that is used to complete the work. Any company that will attempt to conceal unforeseen issues does not deserve my business, to say nothing of the incompetence that led us to this situation. read more

Interstate Flooring has helped us with several projects, all went as planned and we are very happy. We have new granite counters, new hardwood refinishing, new window coverings, new master bath remodel and a complete ADU remodel. Working with Interstate Flooring was a very frustrating & unprofessional experience. If you want a general contractor who is never reachable, makes billing errors, hires incompetent subcontractors, takes 4 times longer to complete the job than promised, & makes you pay a huge deposit up front, then Interstate Flooring is the right choice - otherwise, recommend not using. There were many delays --- The countertop and floor tile ordered were discontinued, but Interstate failed to inform us for weeks, letting us believe that everything was still on track, and did not return any of our calls for updates. (We understood delays in supply orders due to COVID; what we did not understand was why they waited weeks to tell us that the materials we selected were not available, prolonging the whole process.) The subcontractors who removed the floor tile tried to claim there was structural damage, when there was nothing wrong with the structure, causing lengthy delays. Interstate removed our kitchen sink, but then it turned out that they ordered the wrong kitchen countertop, leaving me without any running water in my kitchen for over a month! Eventually, I had to specifically request to have a temporary sink hook-up since they never offered. Then, when the countertop finally arrived, it could not be installed because no one had leveled the cabinets. So, we had more delays waiting for the cabinets to be leveled. Then, when the island countertop was installed, it was the wrong size. So, again we had to wait about another month for the correct countertop to be ordered. Then, it turned out that Interstate did not realize that we would need extra support legs built for the larger island top - more delays. Ultimately, the job took about 4 months when they initially told us it would be about two weeks. During the entire time that they performed the work, they had let their contractor's license expire, potentially subjecting us to serious liability. Moreover, it was very difficult to reach Debbie, the owner (or anyone else at Interstate). Even the subcontractors could not timely reach her with questions - causing a lot of miscommunications and unnecessary delays. (She claims that she lives in an area without cell service, although their business is based in Portland.) Plus, throughout the entire construction process, Debbie, the general contractor, only came to the worksite once (to drop off my sink) to see the work being done. They made billing errors by implying that the contract price included sales tax, but later said they forgot to include it (a mistake that cost us an unanticipated $1,700 more) - and then, billed the incorrect amount of tax. Hiring Interstate Flooring was hands-down one of the most regrettable decisions I ever made due to their utter lack of professionalism. read more

We had Armstrong linoleum and a wool carpet project done here for a 510 sq. foot space. They were knowledgeable and had a huge selection. If a flooring option exists, they know of it and can access it. We likely paid more than we had to ($3,900+ (06-15)), but we were trying to keep it local, they seem more accountable than big box options, know PDX (older) homes and we needed a little hand holding through the process. They give customers space and there is very little (with time) they can't do. Things move very slow at Interstate Flooring (the installer had to enter the home 12 separate times). We didn't feel judged or rushed at any point. We worked with John, he is a flooring expert and knows his stuff. read more

I recently completed a project with Interstate Flooring. Though I am satisfied with the finished project, working with them through the installation was very frustrating and unprofessional. They estimated a 3-day installation process for a carpet and flooring project, and it ended up taking a month. We had multiple days where Interstate told us that the installation crew would be working on our house, and the crew never showed up - it turns out that this was due to lack of communication between Interstate and the installer. There were multiple occasions of materials not being delivered at the right time to our house. Overall, communication and coordination by Interstate was among the worst experiences I've ever had working with a contractor. Like many of the previous reviewers, I never once heard from Debbie apologizing for the multiple delays. I wish I had paid more attention to the recent reviews before hiring them. I give them one star because we got to a decent finished product in the end, but the process of working with them was very stressful and I cannot recommend their service. read more

Interstate stands by their work. My cork floor installation had a small, but noticeable dip. The owner, Debbie, personally came out to my house 3 times to make sure it was fixed to my satisfaction. As a subcontractor I have a bad experience with Interstate Flooring. We did 4 jobs for them installing granite countertops in April and May this year and they never paid us. I sent them multiple e-mails, left messages, but Debbie never returned my phone calls or e-mails. The employee Betty helped us like we were working on a million dollar project and provided very helpful suggestions. We are so thrilled with the service and product we received from Interstate Flooring. We were looking for a renewable hardwood floor material, and I went thinking I knew what we wanted. John, the salesman was very knowledgeable and directed me to another style of finish on hardwood than I had originally wanted. He explained why I would be happier with the material he was suggesting, but was not the least bit pushy. I took his advice, and am so happy. He assured us we could install it ourselves, and it came out beautifully. When we needed another piece, he ordered it and had it fedexed to us so we could continue the project. Wow. Truly miserable customer service. I went in this weekend after visiting several local flooring stores on a search for bamboo flooring for my home. I was initially surprised by the fact that I was not greeted by anyone for several minutes after we arrived, and actually wondered if anyone was even there. I was nevertheless hopeful that the visit would be successful because the variety of products they carry is quite immense. After poking around, obviously confused and looking for help for awhile, we approached the lukewarm salesperson and asked where their bamboo flooring samples are located. She showed us one item, said it was all they have on hand, didn't offer to see if anything else could be ordered, and essentially made it clear that she was done helping us. read more

Interstate helped us out in a time crunch without sacrificing anything in the quality of their service and installation. Having a deadline to move into a home, we needed carpeting for two large areas that had just been painted. John and Debbie helped us select appropriate, beautiful carpet that could be shipped quickly and installed before the move-in date. They suggested a rubber carpet padding that would work in the garage and basement areas. Their attentiveness to our needs at the store and our new home, and their flexibility in scheduling the installation, were very, very helpful. Miguel, who did the installation, was quite experienced, friendly, and took pride in his work. There was one small corner that needed re-doing and he came back to fix it soon after we made that request. We ordered new blinds for our entire main floor and worked with Debbie from Interstate flooring. She was excellent. I opted to install myself to save money but she came out and measured everything. There was a minor snafu with one of the windows because the manufacturer had sent the wrong type of blind. It caused a delay but no up charges and I am happy with the way Debbie handled it.
