As the silly Seinfeld reference goes, Art Vandelay would be totally jealous of the work that MGLM…read morearchitects do. Mark Garzon has been an immense help on two projects for the crib. During a kitchen redesign, Mark sketched a clever reconfiguration of our refrigerator and washer/dryer layouts. This new arrangement breathed new life into the dining area and opened up space! His ideas are sophisticated but he's able to execute the approach in a way that's practical so the contractors doing the grunt work are able to run with it. And let me tell you from the horror stories I've heard when designers/engineers/contractors can't see eye to eye, you don't want to be caught in the middle of that my friends! Especially if it's in your own house! Mark also made some great recommendations for a custom marble coffee table. My handyman Uncle had a beautiful slab of marble in his backyard for years and was kind enough to donate it to me. We wanted to design a minimal steel base that would complement our modern white leather couch in the living room. Mark drew up some plans -- but perhaps most impressive was that he was able to point us to a metal worker in Suburban Chicago! A graceful referral such as this is priceless! To end it with a Seinfeld nod... if you need help with your next design project.. these guys are the "Master of your domain!"

Having hired MGLM to design and oversee the build-out of my retail store and company headquarters -…read moreI couldn't be happier with the quality of the design, the construction, and the attention I received throughout the project. Matt and Elizabeth are creative thinkers who don't compromise function for aesthetics - an important trait in architects who dream big and then when it comes time to living/working in the space, you realize how dysfunctional "the big design" is. I'd attach pictures of my store if I could (maybe you can see it in my profile, not sure about that). I can't tell you the number of compliments I receive and I can't adequately explain just how great it feels to be in the space. My parameters included a "green design" with all recycled materials and Matt and Elizabeth researched the options and were able to keep me in budget, on time, and in keeping with the strict eco-friendly guidelines I required. I wholeheartedly recommend MGLM and look forward to having the opportunity to work with them again.

We were especially impressed with our designer, Jackie (and her assistant Katie). They had fantastic ideas: from designing the overall layout, to help in choosing materials, to even how to paint a difficult area to enhance the design. One of the unique parts of our project was the desire to keep some beautiful existing components (specifically some cabinetry, stone countertops, bamboo woodwork and a sauna) but move them to new locations. Jackie did an excellent job in designing that arranging. We lived onsite throughout the project, so we were able to see the process "up close and personal". All of the construction personnel from LaMantia and subcontractors they used were very skilled and personable. Our project manager, Mike R, kept us informed on progress and who was coming each day. The initial schedule was "almost" met. We got delayed by lighting and electric (more our fault than theirs) in the middle, but they did a great job of an extra push to make sure a critical section was usable prior to a wedding brunch we were hosting. We would HIGHLY recommend LaMantia to anyone looking to remodel their home.

Nancy and Natasha patiently guided me through every detail of the design and selections. Mike was a fantastic project manager, and all the subcontractors work was of the highest quality. They even finished ahead of schedule. You can tell this is a family owned business because they treat their customers like family. Thank you LaMantia for helping me create these wonderful spaces in my new home!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON CHICAGO PERMIT SERVICES!…read more Extremely unprofessional and disappointing experience with Sofia Simotas and Chicago Permit Services! I paid this company $2,375 to help obtain a permit for composite decking on my terrace in Chicago. I made it clear from the beginning exactly what materials I wanted to use. Here's the worst part: The City of Chicago had already raised concerns about combustible decking materials, yet Sofia continued moving forward with architectural plans and collecting additional payments! I specifically confirmed AGAIN that I wanted composite decking. Instead of properly resolving the building code issue before charging me more money, the company proceeded with plans specifying composite decking. Unsurprisingly, the City later rejected that approach because the decking material did not meet the applicable fire safety requirements. Sofia then claimed the building code had changed and refused to refund my money! WHAT EXACTLY DID I PAY $2,375 FOR? I hired professionals because I expected them to understand Chicago building codes, identify potential problems, and communicate critical information BEFORE taking my money. Instead, I was left with wasted money, months of frustration, and a project that could not move forward as planned. In my experience, Sofia was misleading, failed to communicate important information clearly, and did not provide the level of professional guidance I paid for. I even had to take this dispute to small claims court. Unfortunately, the court ruled against me, but that does not change how disappointed I am with the service I received. My advice: BE VERY CAREFUL BEFORE HIRING CHICAGO PERMIT SERVICES OR WORKING WITH SOFIA SIMOTAS. Get everything in writing, independently verify the building code requirements, and do not assume that paying for professional permit services means your project has been properly evaluated. I WOULD NEVER HIRE THIS COMPANY AGAIN!
