We are from out of town...and this place is special. Great selection. Incredibly kind staff. They were so personable I didn't want to leave! Which is rare for me. The prices are on point, if not on the more affordable side. They had crystals for $0.50 - $1.00 (not all of them obviously) but the majority of the more "expensive" ones were like $3-6. We were wondering around the streets of Asheville and accidentally wandered into this cool little shop. It has really good karma. Sorry, I had to say that. But, it's true. It's a funky cool little neohippie feel good shop - the type that I've always loved. Within 10 seconds of walking into the store, the person behind the counter (Jerry, very nice fellow) immediately identified my shirt. It was a shirt that had a logo from the "Venture Brothers" show. So far, only two people have managed to identify this shirt, so I was impressed immediately. We struck up a conversation, and had a lovely experience looking around the shop. I bought a couple of sticks of incense, and felt good as I left the place. They have cool tapestries, some large some small, some 3-D, some fun clothes, various accoutrement for "tobacco usage". They also have cool Tibetan singing bowls, all sorts of meditational trinkets, as well as Tarot cards, etc. It's just a good time. Go there. :-) read more

Instant Karma is so Asheville! I love to bring my out-of-town visitors shopping here to experience the side of Asheville that I first fell in love with many years ago. When I think about my experiences in town when I first moved here 11 years ago, I think of Instant Karma and other hippie, earth-loving people and places. Instant Karma has clothing, jewelry, bags/purses, scarves, hats, spiritual tools, tapestries and stickers. They have a huge stock of colorful accessories and decorations. The staff here are always so friendly and knowledgable. This is the type of place that I know I will walk into and be able to have a thoughtful conversation with someone if I want to. Plus the staff always has great ideas for people for places to go in town. Although I live here, I often hear them giving out-of-town guests recommendations. A fun spot to stop by any time I'm walking around town or shopping. read more

Neat little shop in a row of similar shops. Lots of nifty hippie gear - beads, jewelry, clothes, hats, knitted and woven things. Lots of handmade and some local items. What makes them stand out most from the line of similar shops all next door to each other is definitely the trippy 3D wall tapestries. I have to imagine people come buy one of these just to have at home for when they get incredibly drunk and high. It's like an acid trip without the acid. Only I wouldn't honestly know if it really is like that. But it's fun, regardless. read more

I have a soft spot for this store. This was the first shop I visited when I moved to Asheville a year ago and it captivated me. I love the sense of calm I get the moment I walk in. I'm always greeted and helped, if not immediately then soon after I've begun shopping. I don't know the names of staff but they've all been lovely. The blonde man at the register seems like a really cool guy. I've gotten a unique wrap bracelet from here that has held up over time and a wolf tapestry that is one of my most favorite possessions. I've also purchased earrings for a friend and several of their graphic tees both for men and women. They carry a great selection of prints. I always feel like I'm finding something unique here. They have a whole section of blown glass. The spheres are my favorite. Absolutely mesmerizing work. They've recently remodeled the store and it's a bit more spacious now although I never felt it was too small. You can also buy probably every type of American Spirit cigarette, clever bumper stickers and magnets, posters and incense and other little gift items. Great place for the tourist and local alike to shop. I'm always tempted to buy a new style of mood ring when I get to the register. There's something in this store that really carries the heart of Asheville in it. At least that's how it's always felt to me. My boyfriend adores it as well. Please support them :) read more

As soon as you walk in you instantly know what kind of store you are in. My daughter and I were wondering around Asheville and she had said she wanted to find these flowy pants that a friend of hers had. She said they are like a hippie would wear and they look super comfy. We happened to walk past the store and instantly knew this was the place to find them. When we walked in we became a little overwhelmed by all the stuff EVERYWHERE but as we started to wander around and take everything in we started to find some neat things. My daughter was over the moon bc she finally found a pendant to put her crystals in so she can wear them. She then glanced over the incense holders but unfortunately she didn't find one she liked. Finally we made our way to the back of the store where the clothing was and she found a pair of pants my daughter liked. They were a little pricey for a pair of pants she was only going to wear at home and to dance but if it makes her happy I guess it's worth it. I was not going to buy them without trying them on which luckily was allowed we just needed permission. So we made our way to the cashier to ask to use the fitting room which we were told "Sure go right ahead and if it doesn't work just leave hung up there" Hooray they fit! So we went back to the cashier and she was super friendly and we found out she was a BTS army fan which totally made my daughter's day! I don't think we will be coming in often but I am sure my daughter will want to bring her friends and I will have no problem visiting again. While the hippie aesthetic is not one we subscribe to we definitely recommend this place to those who do. You will definitely find everything you need plus visit with some awesome people! read more

Visited asheville today and my dad wanted to show me his favorite store, instant karma! As soon as we walked in I felt at home. The girl that was working was very welcoming and sweet. I ended up finding the most comfortable hippie pants ever and my dad of course really enjoyed the Grateful Dead selection and tapestries they had. The girl working helped me understand more about the crystals they had (I had no idea about anything related to crystals) and helped me pick out the best ones for exactly what I needed! 10/10 recommend this shop if you're ever in asheville. Now Asheville is like Seattle with their starbucks across from a starbucks only with tobacco shops. I didnt even check into all the onces I went into (my phone literally wouldn't allow it at one point I was checking in so much). However this place was one of them they had very expenlsive, unique, and locally made pieces of art. as well as an extensive array of glasswares sure to thrill any collector. read more

My daughter and I were up from Florida because of the awesome hiking and she remembered from past visits the bohemian clothing stores and was hoping to find some things before school started up. We had such a pleasant experience with most shopkeepers in Asheville, but the staff at Instant Karma stood out. Their selection was neatly organized and the two young women there were extremely nice and helpful. My daughter found some things and I found a t-shirt and wasn't even looking for myself. I actually wasn't sure about anonymous threads until I looked into the descriptions & read the blog entry. This is obviously someone who's had struggles and is now turning things around. I really liked the human kindness & gay for Jesus descriptions. As far as the store goes, I think it's great that they are supporting local artists like the founder of anonymous threads. I was out taking a break today and wandered into Instant Karma. What a charming and well thought out place. Doug, the owner, was genuine and friendly upon customer arrivals and those working there were just as helpful and attentive. In addition, with prices being what they are in Asheville, I was expecting the items and clothing to be more expensive due to the quality, but I found the prices to be very fair. Great tapestry, jewelry, and clothing selection in well organized and clean rows. I look forward to coming back to this place for gifts as well as some additions to my own cultural collection. read more

What a fun shop. We wandered in and must have stayed an hour browsing through all the trippy goods and talking to Doug, the co-owner. There is so much creative and genuinely interesting stuff to see. The 3D tapestries are amazing. There's unusual jewelry, an Asheville coloring book, incense, cool clothes and more. The magnets and bumper stickers are a real laugh. We just had to buy the one that declared that 'rhinos are just old fat unicorns'! Highly recommended! read more
