We saw their advertisement on Instagram and decided to go check out the gallery. I'm really glad that we went by because it was absolutely amazing. I'm shocked that we never heard about this place before. It made for a really good date night. We checked out the main attraction that we saw on Instagram but we also check out all of the other galleries as well. At least the ones that were open. The artist at the galleries were very friendly, and willing to tell us about their set up and everything they do. I had no idea this place has been here since the 1960s. We will definitely come back here in the future to check out more exhibits. I'm shocked and it's only $700 a month to rent a space. That's a really good deal. However, there's a five year waiting list which is quite long. So good luck with that. read more

Awesome Vinyl Store, people walking in with bottles of wine and beer getting all drunk to play some video games, it was a first but hey why do it any other way. A lot of kidrobot, dunny, different toy brands. He doesn't carry Bwana Spoons which is my favorite and one of the most famous artists especially in New York, they do have a lot of locally made items which are okay but it looks like I could goto Hobby Lobby and make what they made, sorry lol. However they have tournaments, and the coolest is the custom art on the wall which is made locally which I love. My fiance and I had been wanting to visit this place since it first opened a few weeks ago (heard about it from a friend who linked me to their facebook page) and even though the business is just getting started the store looks great and has many awesome products! The owner was working when we went and was very nice and helpful and greeted us and other customers who walked into the door. The store was organized, clean and had awesome figures, posters, vinyl toys and plushies(two of which were our first purchases..yay Tako!) as said in their description. They also have things like wall scrolls, Japanese snacks, art for sale from I believe local artists and space invader pillows (we need to come back for some of these, lol). I really like that they hold game tournaments as well. I only know of two other places in Houston that do this, and those are strictly game centers. The only thing I would change is the time they close. When I first heard about them and their name "Insomnia" I thought they would be open until 12am or so, but sadly they are only open until 7pm everyday except Sunday. I asked the owner about this and he said maybe when they get more established he might change the times, lets hope! =D It would make it easier for my fiance and I to make it out there more often. ;) (we live in katy=( ..) Such an exciting store! My boyfriend loves it here! It's right across the street from Fat Cat!So everytime we visit Fat Cat we always come here. I honestly lose time in this store. I have my eyes set on the 8"tall Sriracha Dunny. Or the gigantic gold dunny on top of the shelf. I need to save money before I can afford dunny. They have video games you can play, tournaments, special events, non-sport trading cards, mini figurines, kidobot, scaredy Labbit, super mario figures, stuffed plushies, puzzles, tshirts, and more. Every Thursday is fight night from 7pm -2am. You can play Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Marvel vs. Capcom, Tekken Tag, and much more. It's BYOC!! Every Fridays is free play day from 7pm-midnight. Various games like fighting games, smash bros, melee, classic games and more. They also play movies. Every Saturday are special events or tournaments. Most tournaments are $10. Such a cool gallery! This place was hosting an Adult Swim fan art exhibition when I went. If you're not familiar, they have all kinds of demented cartoon characters with a cult following. The local artists were selling original works of art, all on the cheap, with a vast display of talent. The front of the gallery has a bunch of weird vinyl, stickers, t-shirts, and prints. Much of it was strange Texas stuff or obscure Japanese artists. Too cool! They have a bar in the back, and were accepting canned food donations for Hurricane Harvey victims. The gallery can get crowded, but they have a cool front area with a courtyard bisected by a driveway that makes for a cool place to hang out and take in the arts scene. The staff was friendly, and answered lots of questions about the work. I was unable to purchase anything, since I had to leave before the end of the show, and they wanted to display the works of art throughout the show, which I completely understand. Most everything was very reasonably priced, especially for how cool and unique the art was. I can't wait for the next show! read more

Been going to their art shows since their old location. It's always interesting, fun, and they throw a fun party! If you haven't, you should go to one of their shows, it's always fun! Also, their new location has way more parking than the old one, thank you! Other than art shows, they also sell art works from different local artists, and figures, pins, knick knacks. They sell stuff from several of my favorites Texas artists, so I come by occasionally when I miss a few shows to get more prints. This a neat little shop right in the heart of the Heights. The shop is decently sized and carries an "ok" collection. I've stopped in a few times with the bf since he like the prints that they carry by some local artists. On our first visit here, we went in to find the joint packed with kids. They regularly host gaming tournaments and I saw that they have a separate room where anyone could sit down and play some video games (non tournament). They have t-shirts, different mini collectibles, posters and plushes. If you know someone who loves gaming, this is a good spot to find a gift for them. The employees have been nice each time we've stopped by and they even host art shows in the Houston area but follow them on fb to get details (that's what we were told). Even though they share parking with other businesses, parking has never been a problem. Good store just wish they had more variety. read more

I'm loving the new location! They've recently moved next to Bohemeo's in the East End, which is great because parking is so much bigger than the Heights location. The owner was kind enough to show me some Figma figures that were selling for 50% off, a steal. The place is just what the new name suggests: an art gallery. The storefront carries a lot less video game related merchandise because of this change, which I do miss. However, the transformation into an art venue provides a new outlet to showcase the underrated Houston art scene. Many of the mural artists which paint the iconic murals in EaDo and Montrose sell their prints here; you'll find unique pins and merch not easily found elsewhere. read more

I would definitely​ say that this place is not worth a trip unless you​ live a block or two away and it is convenient​t like extremely convenient​. I popped​ in in order to buy​ some vinyl and the records themselves are nicely laid out and categorized​. I walked in as someone was walking out and then it was only a guy behind​ the register and myself. There was absolutely ZERO customer service. I mean none. The guy stood there behind the counter on his phone and never asked if there was something​ that he could help me with. A female walked in and stared at me like I didn't belong or something. It was one of those looks from head to toe and a smirk. She then proceeded behind the counter and never asked if I needed anything​ or if there were any questions that she could​help​p me with. At this point was ready to leave. I grabbed a record I wanted and when I looked up above the entrance door I saw their $100 records displayed. I really wanted​ to but two of the albums on the wall but felt like I​ should spend mymoney​y somewhere else. I really did not want to give these people my money. There was some sort of "gallery" in the store and I would have probably bought something there as well but guess what? They didn't say one word about it. I finally went to the counter and the female finally opened her mouth to tell me how much the record was. I could have asked questions but why would I try to force them to speak to me, the customer? Their selection of vinyl wasn't very good at all. I did ask when they received the ​product and the female asked the male and the male responded​ to the female who then told me that they receive records every day​. However we went to a thrift store around the corner and snagged one of their moogle a for $5!! They have Free Play Fridays and have some consoles set up for games ie: Street Fighter, Smash/Melee, Mortal Kombat, MarvelvCapcom, etc. Insomnia also sell all sorts of awesome stuff too. Love this place! I can never get enough of their merchandise! They have an array of vinyl toys to collect, as well as Japan Anime collectibles. The store appears to sell out of a lot of merchandise and they bring in new assortments all the time. I like the fact that the store is very spacious and there is not a lot of clutter. The owner of the location has a very friendly demeanor. He knows his stuff from record labels, toys, j-pop and more. If there's something you can't find, he will gladly help you with it. I LOVE this place, I only get to visit it a few times when I come into Houston but every time I visit I love it! I have been to many many game culture/japanese culture stores, and they are one of the best available. I love their products, and how the are correctly priced. I know its NOT cheap to bring in products from Japan or other countries, but other business take advantage of that fact, while Insomnia does not. They have everything at a reasonable price. I love how everything is spacious, clean and organized and easy to find. I haven't been to their weekend tournaments yet but I heard they are very fun, many people show up and have a good time. Just moving into Houston about 6 months ago I finally feel like I found a place where I belong on the weekends. The atmosphere is wonderful, and the gaming community at Insomnia is absolutely friendly! Free Play Fridays...well worth spending money on the Hot Dogs too! Playing DDR, Halo, CoD, etc. This beats Gamepad by far in Fredericksburg, VA. The tournaments are not just well structured, but the tournaments also are a great place to make friends! Yeah I might curse every once in a while (rage much? lol), but overall it's still worth it just to have a great time. To sum it up, Insomnia is the best place, in my humble opinion, to play video games on any given day and or night. They have an excellent selection of memorabilia, plus being in North Houston, even along 1960, it's a breeze to get there. Beats the Galleria and I-495 traffic by far! Will be going for months, and possibly years depending on college and location. If you love Anime and/or Video Games, this is a place you MUST go to! read more

They constantly increase their selection and quality of merchandise. Their prices are super fair, even compared to other businesses in the area and online. They host events for the Houston gaming and art communities. And their customer service is top-notch. This place really is as good as it gets. They host free play events every Friday night where you can go in, play on their equipment, and meet a lot of really cool and interesting people. Without paying any kind of venue fee or making any kind of purchase. Insomnia really is business done right. They support the community, and the community supports them back. They don't play favorites. They don't go to war with other establishments. And they appreciate every customer that walks through the door. Came here for the Cosmic Kooks art show with a friend and had a great time! We had a great time looking at less "traditional" art, as well as some more alternatives and punk rock selections of Vinyl. Everything seemed very fairly priced, and it was cool to see how a lot of local artists were being supported with prints for sale. The event we were attending was very crowded, so the relatively small space was very packed, but the staff who rang up my purchase were still doing their best to be attentive to everyone, though I could see it was a little bit hectic for them. This place is pretty damn cool. I went when they were having a gaming event as we were going to Cane Rosso which uses the same parking lot. The location is pretty small but they have two gaming rooms and a sectioned off additional gaming area. They have pretty cool art all over the walls and some great stuff for sale. They even had snacks and drinks for sell. From the look of their event, there was a great turn out and everyone was very friendly and enjoying themselves. read more

I am an avid toy collector and this is my favorite place to find all the good toys! Chris is very friendly and knowledgeable on all his products and good at keeping us informed of new product with his mailing list! Hands down the best pop culture store in Houston! Their inventory is scarce, especially compared to, well, any store.. The store seems empty and space seems reserved more for playing video games. Most stocked items are also over priced, you are better off purchasing on line. They claim to have things you can't find elsewhere, however, I have seen a lot of the stuff, (and frankly cooler items), at better gaming/hobby shops, and hell, even at places like Barnes and Nobel. Again, go on line, this place is over priced. I've been to the shop a few times to give it a chance, however, I haven't seen much of the "quality items" moved, meaning, the inventory they carry is in low demand, and or... as I said earlier, more reasonably priced elsewhere. Web site is poorly built.. ehh, and I go on.... Seems more a place where late teens to early 20s can pay a price to..... wait to game???? Well, if that what you want to do. Owner is nice, I give them the 1 star for that, otherwise, go to a quality gamer/nerdy hobbyist shop. I won't name any because this is not intended to promote anyone else, but... don't come here expecting something great. Another reason I give it one star is that the people hanging out there are your typical, "pot heads". They aren't the violent type, but definitely the involved crowd. You will also notice their last review is from 8/2013, which should tell you there are not a lot of new customers hitting the store and digging it. I only went to look for vinyl toys and was not disappointed. Not a big store but has a good selection of blind boxes. I was able to get a few things I haven't seen at any other store. Definitely some place to check out if you are into that kind of stuff. Will come back again. read more
