One of my proudest moments in life was when I joined the Washington Shotokan Association Dojo. The dojo is a delightful spotless and clean, dedicated facility with a floating wood floor and large changing rooms with showers. It's a great place to learn traditional Japanese karate and grow as a person with smart, gracious, and learned educators. they are profoundly dedicated to their students. You can enjoy adult and youth programs. Whether you are looking for a good workout that will teach you self-defense or want an activity for the kids that will teach them discipline and respect while keeping them physically active, WSA dojo is the perfect choice. I had the opportunity to attend different classes with different instructors. At anytime I was very happy to learn to practice differently, something is important to have the passion, and need to learn with love, feeling and respect, you'll never regret. I'm thankful to every one of the educators, senseis, sempais, and understudies I had the delight of meeting in every one of the classes I joined in. All those memories stay alive forever. I continue training nonstop, keeping in my mind and in practice the principles of the repeated Dojo Kun: * Seek perfection of character * Be Faithful * Endeavor * Respect others * Refrain from violent behavior Oss! I hope return to train with you, with my family WSA, soon. With warmest regards, Miloud B.

While the gym is small, it's clean and has all the equipment needed for training (kick shields, tomb stones, training knives and guns). The gym also has a kickboxing program led by a group of amazing instructors so you can get a good sweat session. Most importantly, the KMW training is consistent with what I've seen in other KMW gyms, with knowledgeable instructors, clear training plans (with standard belt testing), and a safe community of students, instructors and owners. During these unprecedented times, I encourage you to check this location out and see what you can do to protect yourself and loved ones.

The Bellevue training center is open for in-person classes and I attended a free trial class there last night. You can schedule the trial class via text message once you have requested the class online. That was convenient. Coach Christian also took the time to call me and talk me through what to expect, what to wear, what to bring, etc. The training center was sparkling clean and everyone was very welcoming. It was a great workout and in every class you learn or repeat two or three highly applicable self-defense techniques first by yourself and then with a partner. Coach Jesse who leads the Wednesday Level 1 class was very responsive, provided guidance and helped correct wrong techniques. I will be back next week and I hope you come give it a try as well! Great workout for all ages, all shapes and forms with or without martial arts background!

I joined specifically because I was told there were ladies-only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. As a complete beginner, I was only comfortable training in a women-only environment, and that was the primary reason I chose this gym. I spent nearly $500 on a punch card and required training gear based on that understanding. When I signed up, Luke specifically told me that the punch card would not expire. Months later, I was informed that it actually had a six-month expiration policy. More importantly, the ladies-only classes that were the entire reason I enrolled were eventually removed from the schedule altogether. When I raised concerns, the solution offered was for me to attend regular mixed-gender classes. That completely missed the point. I had been clear from the beginning that I was not comfortable training with men and would not have signed up otherwise. I attempted to find a reasonable resolution and even suggested alternatives, including one-on-one instruction. Instead, my refund request was denied despite the fact that the specific program I signed up for no longer exists. What I found most disappointing was the lack of professionalism and accountability. After spending hundreds of dollars and making multiple efforts to resolve the matter respectfully, I was left with services I cannot use, no meaningful solution, and ultimately no response to my follow-up email. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend T3MA.

After the tournament in British Columbia, I decided to join TKD classes under Master Hufana's guidance. Over time, I also did some training with him on Traditional Arnis, a Filipino martial art known for its focus on weapon-based fighting techniques. Traditional Arnis emphasizes not only physical combat skills but also mental discipline and strategic thinking. In 2004, my life took a different turn as I was deployed to Afghanistan as part of the US Army. It was during this challenging period that the philosophy of martial arts, instilled by Master Hufana and the training experiences, became invaluable. The principles of martial arts such as tactics, alertness, preparedness, survival skills, fitness, and the code of the Samurai served as guiding lights in navigating the complexities of a war zone. The teachings of honesty, loyalty, respectfulness, and maintaining integrity at all times resonated deeply with me as I faced adversity in Afghanistan. The discipline instilled through martial arts training helped me to stay focused, resilient, and true to my martial arts values even in the most challenging circumstances.Master Hufana's philosophy not only enriched my understanding of martial arts but also equipped me with valuable life lessons that transcended the boundaries of combat sports. The fusion of Eastern martial arts philosophy with Western military service exemplifies the universal applicability and timeless wisdom embedded in martial arts traditions. With respect, MK-Samurai 2024.

Positively, it is not the "Cobra Kai" of Judo. It is a family-run nurturing dojo that genuinely cares for its young students. Sensei June Encarnacion is a very dedicated instructor that volunteers his time (and the time of his son and Olympic hopeful daughter) along with the other instructors. With that comes the welcome lack of high-pressure sales (as mentioned in the other reviews), free trial classes, and encouragement for everyone to participate regardless of skill or experience. Most importantly, it draws other instructors that come because they want to spend their time teaching and practicing. For those interested, Seiei respects Japanese tradition and customs without going "Bushido Spartan". Seiei welcomes students from all ages, experience, and backgrounds. It is a gem of a find to have a 30-yr veteran giving his time so freely. With his experience comes solid techniques and unique training methods for the younger kids. The class sizes are growing and the dojo may soon need a bigger space for all its students. So where's the 5th star? Perhaps I was brought up in a less nurturing environment (i.e., seiza on the hard floor for punishment, 20 push-ups for missing a ground ball in T-ball, bringing home an "A-" on a test just brought on questions about the minus, why 45 minutes of piano practice was not as good as an hour, etc.), so there's always room for improvement. But maybe if my instructors were as kind and patient as Sensei I would have stuck to my training. :)

Koei Kan Martial Arts Academy in Bellevue is the kind of place that becomes a part of your family, a place where you sweat, where you push yourself, where you grow, and where you learn. Sparring is freeform and rarely point although point fighting is taught as it's apart of the system. They also practice bogu kumite which if your unfamiliar with I suggest looking it up! The sensei's/students are very mindful about limitations and will meet you wherever you are. Throws/take downs and ground fighting are also heavily focused on. Many students cross train in this system and bjj, the school also hosts bjj(gi/no gi) events and often hold training events with other styles. Again everyone is super mindful of limiations/experience and will meet you where you're at. On the lighter side kata (empty hand and weapons) are also taught and comes from a shudokan/shuri-te background. Bunkai (application of kata), nage (throws/takedowns/self defense techniques) are also taught and focused on. To sum it all up, this dojo is great no matter where you are in martial arts (new or experienced), great for kids/family's too, and offer flexible training times throughout the day. It's well worth checking out!
