While it isn't one of my favourite breweries, it still certainly works out well as one of those…read moreplaces where you can get a good beer, as well as a good meal. Mind you, the thing I found a little annoying was that it isn't necessarily always open, which meant that I had to time myself to make sure I was in the area so that I could actually go and check it out. Yeah, in a way it was okay, and there were some nice beers, but the thing is that they weren't necessarily my favourite.

I came here because they were having a charity event, trying to raise money for the Australian…read moreCancer Research Foundation, as the most amount of people to brew a beer. It was easy to find, and you can't miss the green trucks on the street that are posted with Thunder Road Brewing. Here I got a tour of the brewery, with an explanation of the brewing process. It was fun adding hops to the big kettle, and seeing the head brewers explaining everything to you. I must say that all of the staff were very friendly. On the downside, the main thing that I missed was that this brewery didn't have food on location. Sure, they have eateries around the block, and on this certain day, they had a food truck right outside their door. And I wish I had gotten tasting notes. I ordered a paddle, and could not for the life of me remember which beer was which. Sure when the beer-man first helps you out, he explains everything to you, at the bar. But once I sat down to try these out, I didn't know A from B. So, if I liked one more than the others, I was basically helpless to know what it was. If it wasn't for the charity cause, I don't think I would have ever made it to TR Brewing. But I'm glad that I did, I helped brew a beer!

I'm leaving this at 5 stars because as this is the main reason I come here. This is an amazing…read morecraft beer venue. The rotating selection of craft beer is more than great. Also the passionate, knowledgeable and friendly staff are fab. However yesterday I tried the Philly Cheese Steak and I was disappointed. If it was sold as a beef sanga it would've been ok (perhaps even good if you were starving). However I've had Philly Cheese Steak in the US both in Philadelphia and New York (even Red Hook in Brisbane) and the difference is huge. Not only is there more of everything but the meat has flavour, lots of flavour basically nothing like what's sold here. As I was leaving I noted it's by Sparrows that operate within Fitzroy's Catfish. And that makes sense because I've tried them there and have been equally disappointing.

All hail the ale! All cheer the beer!…read more Another local haunt of mine. The clue's in the name as to why this is an absolute must destination if you love craft beer (and if you don't, you're wrong); one of the best in Melbourne in my opinion. There's always some interesting beers to try and the selection of 12 constantly rotating taps keeps things interesting. The place is laid back, service friendly and knowledgeable, only downside is that it's not the cheapest place to drink but the quality and variety of beers makes it worth the price. There's also A/C ( very welcome on days like today; 38C). There's a small garden out back which is usually pretty quiet. Haven't tried the food but they have some daily specials which seem popular.

Head over to Kensington to hang with the locals on Friday nights at Henry St Brewhouse. Like all…read moregood things in Melbourne, this brewery bar is not an obvious stop on the High Street. In fact, I had to inform my friend that lived in the neighbourhood that it existed. He went there immediately and declared he was never leaving. The brewhouse's décor is DIY- with planks of wood fastened together to create benches and a small outdoor 'patio' that pulls into the brewery at the end of the night. (For beer drinkers in the know - if you like Hop Nation, then you'll also love Henry Street.) For the undecided, or the unfamiliar, the bar offers tasting paddles with five samples of your choice of beer for $20. Sadly on the night we visited they had run out of at least three of the beers I was hoping try. But we managed to try everything else on the list, which provided a good intro to the range. (We declared the Monsieur Gray IPA the winner that night.) Local beer is the focus at this bar. So if you're feeling peckish, pull out the phone and order delivery. The drawbacks are that it's only open on a Friday. Plus, like every brewery, it's open and draughty, so dress for the weather. The beer bar (also serving a selection of spirits) is a laid back, unpretentious place to hang with friends. It's not my 'hood, but it was worth the trip to visit friends that do live there. It's a great addition to the Melbourne brewery bar scene.
