We enjoyed our first night in Melbourne visiting an independent brewery at the Stomping Ground Brewing establishment. The selection of beers and ciders, at least 18, on tap and some great food to accompany the libations. The calamari was very good, even if the portion was smaller than expected, the fresh baked pretzel went well with the beer and the pizzas were very tasty.

It seems as if the modern brewery is literally like a pub. Well, not quite because you also have brewery pubs, which this isn't - this is just a brewery. I have seen Stomping Ground about the place, but to really try what they have to offer you have to come to the brewery. It is actually quite large inside, and even has play equipment (which impressed my friends somewhat). As for the beer, well there is a huge selection, one so large that I really should come back to try some more.

Me: Come to this cool new brewery with me today. They have weird beers. Friend: Weird beers? I'm not interested in beers with too much flavour. Me: You're an idiot. And then off I went to Stomping Ground Brewing, located (kinda) opposite Le Bon Ton, and who shall now be known as the purveyor of weird beers. Important to note, Stomping Ground is not yet complete. They have great plans for decking out the currently very concrete/industrial looking space over the coming months, but it will be great fun to watch this place evolve. As an extremely greedy/thirsty human, I sampled many of the beers including the Aloha Lager (which is described as tasting just like a Hawaiian volcano) and a Peach Tart (a sour ale that was incredibly drinkable.) If you're a fan of beer with a whole lot of flavour, get involved with Stomping Ground Brewing.

Review Highlights - Stomping Ground Brewing

We tried the house sampler, and found concurrence on the brown ale, milk stout, and Cherry cider collaboration.

And this place left me with high expectations for any other one that I will come across. Only open on Fridays and Wednesday's, I came here for one of their free brewery tours (6:30pm). Did I mention that they are free? Winning! We arrived early, and found a table. I knew exactly what I was coming here for; beer and pizza; such a beautiful combination. Taking advice from the bar-man, we ordered the pizza that had ham on it. Now, because the tour was going to be starting soon, we realized that we wouldn't have had enough time to down our drinks and our pizza. The staff were so kind, and delayed putting our pizza into the oven until we finished our tour. The tour was great! Very informative, you get to learn about their process, and how they go about beer the "goat way". The ham on the pizza was just a tiny bit too salty for my liking, but I won't hold that against them. I'll just self note it to myself to try something different the next time. This place got crowded as the night progressed. We saw some bicyclists come in, and even saw some families here enjoying their pizza. Side note: Their Steam Ale- it's organic!

Well, I have to admit that as a brewery it wasn't too bad, though I do have to admit that I have been to better. Well, the service wasn't too bad, and they did have some nice beers, though I can't necessarily say that they were absolutely fantastic. However, as a place for a beer, and a nice variety at that, this place certainly works.

The staff has made every effort to open early as Hawthorn has beem notoriously thirsty and deserves a second brewery on one of it's main routes. The beers range from lightweight saisons to double IPAs which is casting a big net that time will prove if this is worthy gamble other than going with the styles they feel. It is a great time to come over and also check what the local tastebuds are on as the menu is still changing. The beer styles on offering are all fine and there are no misses although it doesn't show any kind of personal/local signature (yet). Food options range from some locally loved favs (occy & steaks) to pizzas and general small pub grub. The kitchen seems to be doing a good job in terms of ideation, flavor, locality and delivery. Prices are on the mid to high-end mark although this place has yet to prove itself beer or food wise which is not looking very promising to sales or rep. Give it a chance if you're passing through and you must be here at least once if you live/lived in Hawthorn.

On the…read moretour you get a brief rundown of the beer making process and get to see the process in action, from brewing to bottling it is all completed here at the Carlton United Brewery. You can ask questions as well. The tour itself last 45 minutes and takes you into the brewery to see the action...or lack thereof. The tours run Monday to Friday and some Saturday mornings, and I choose a Friday afternoon to take the tour. The brewery was pretty much deserted, save for a few maintenance workers, you see depending on the demand the staff can shut up shop Friday's. So the only action our large tour group witnessed was bottling, which was frantic and fast! The best part of the tour naturally was the beer tasting back at the Brew House (see prior review for Brew House itself) where we each got to chose four 100ml tastings from the range of 10 options at the bar. They ranged from the good -Cascade, VB and Carlton Dry to the bad - Fosters and Pear Cinder. The tour seems rather rushed and given the lack of brewing action was rather lackluster however I took my Dad for his birthday and he enjoyed it. It was his first brewery tour and loved learning about the process and of course the samples. I have spent many hours on such tours and this tour was not up to scratch. Carlton United has the potential to be a great tourism destination and brand opportunity but an both accounts this the experience fails. The tour goes through the motions without flare. I would give the tour two stars in itself, but then they give you beer, so it can't really be all bad!

Thankfully there was a lovely lady that was more than happy to help us out. We picked up the tour probably 2 - 5 mins behind and the lovely guide brought us up to speed without missing a beat. When comparing the tour with others such as XXXX and the Bundaberg tour, I felt a bit disappointed. The guide was funny and quirky which made the tour interesting and time passed quickly. After the tasting we decided to have lunch and ordered a few beers to go with the meal. The beers were very well priced, however not all beers on offer were available because they don't stock everything in the fridges?!?! Arh, aren't we at a brewery? No cold beer?!?! Isn't there a joke about that? The meal was VERY slow to come out. It was tasty but nothing to write home about. I certainly wouldn't rush back, having said that we did have a good day.
