et me preface all of this by saying that the only reason I have given this venue a single star is because Yelp! requires me to do so in order to write a review, but let this be a lesson in how poorly service and execution can ruin what may have otherwise been a decent venue. I had recently gotten engaged and had began to look for a venue to host our wedding. The Inn at Oneonta was one of the places that we were considering looking into because we had read reviews on Facebook and The Knot which, for other venues, had been relatively accurate. Luckily, we were invited to a close friends wedding shortly after our engagement, so rather than make an appointment to tour the venue, we thought we would get a first hand look at what our wedding could be. As I arrived, I thought the place was extremely outdated, and while it did have a certain charm for people who are looking for "charm", in my book that is just jargon for "old" and "rundown". Regardless, I thought to myself, this place reviewed so well, I am sure there is more to it, so I decided not to judge the book by its cover. The day we were there was little chilly and had a steady drizzle, so what was suppose to be a riverside ceremony because an under-canopy ceremony. While I can imagine the outdoors is a big part of the allure, I did like that there was ample space for a backup plan. The venue space itself was just that, a space. The bride had done a lovely job with decor, but there is only so much you can cover up with table covers and flowers. Something about a concrete slab and a rundown gazebo doesn't really bring out the romance in me, maybe that is just me. The ceremony began and was beautiful, one of the few things the venue didn't have much to do with. Then the reception got underway. Drinks were served and food was beginning to circulate. It's hard to mess up a Miller Lite and cheese and crackers, so kudos to them on that one. I was slightly concerned at some of the rather unprofessional conversation taking place behind the bar in front of the guests, but hey, maybe that's how they roll. Then dinner was served. The food was good, as long as you like your meats and sides at room temperature or below. Nonetheless, friends were getting married, food had been consumed, drinks were flowing, so nothing was going to ruin this night.......nothing, right? Then as the DJ is about to fire up the tunes so I can break out my blue suede shoes, the power goes out. Not to worry, though, as everyone had been so reassuring that they had generators on hand to take care of any such issue. Ok generator, any time now. I will spare you the play-by-play, but I looked at my phone to see what time the power had gone out, and what time the power returned via the "so reliable" generator and it was 47 minutes. Thankfully, the crowd we had was not going to let this glitch break their spirits, so everyone made the most out of a less than preferable situation, but there was no apology, no making it right. For all the reassurances the Inn at Oneonta makes, they don't do a great job of backing them up or making up for their shortcomings. The power outage shorted the DJs ability to play music, a cost to the bride and groom, with no reimbursement from the venue. In fact, the venue was "so professional" that they had the nerve to dock a portion of the deposit on the venue for "clean up". I understand things happen, nature has a way of popping in to shake things up at less than preferable times, but with everything else that had been pretty sub-standard and the unprofessional actions of the owners to not live up to their end of the bargain really speaks volumes. Personally, I will not be having my wedding at this venue and urge anyone else who prefers a professional staff/ownership that can provide you the experience they assure you they can provide, I would strongly encourage you to venture to other venues, as I have recently toured a number of them that far exceed this money pit. read more
