Line work almost complete! The Line work in this case is just being used to guide the color later. Will be bolder later.

There is just not enough room in this webform to properly praise The Inkery. My love for tattoos almost died with a really bad experience I had many years ago when I was a naive 18 year old. That is another story, but the positive to it is that it has made me considerably more choosy about who and what will ink my body again. After several years of waffling on ideas that didn't resonate with me and searching for artists that had talent beyond flash cards and cliche "traditional" tattooing, I came across Scott and David. SO HAPPY because I was prepared to travel to other cities to have the work done properly. If you want traditional work, anchors, infinity symbols or butt-fairies, this probably isn't the place to go. Scott and David both make some beautiful custom pieces and I was utterly floored how well David made my concept everything I wanted it to be and more! If there was anything I wanted tweaked, he handled it with patience and grace. The line work, color blending, and anatomy mastery in their pieces is just ridiculous (in the best way). I'm working on my own business so I'm not making the dollars rain (yet), but I found David's prices to be fair and reasonable for such detailed work. He works very quickly, but my linework appears to be precise. He was VERY awesome about not teasing me when I whined and chatted me up the entire time to take my focus off my discomfort. That went a long way with me. I also plan to have Scott work on me as well, so we will see how that goes! :D

Saw a friend's striking new skull and headpiece tattoo and I had to know who the artist was. A few months later and I had my own beautiful piece from Scott at the Inkery. The studio is has a modern spa feel and when paired with Scott's personality and way of working equal a relaxing tattoo experience. My husband, David Poe, started working at the Inkery as a tattoo artist, and my next great Inkery tattoo is in progress with many more to come.

Scott is the best, and I would recommend (and have recommended) him to any of my friends. He is professional, friendly and incredibly skilled at what he does. Scott is very creative and comes up with ways to illustrate your tattoo concept that you may not have even thought of. At the same time, he always delivers on what you are expecting in your tattoo. My piece from Scott is the largest tattoo I have received, and I could not be more thrilled with the results. I get so many compliments on the level of fine detail and realism in the artwork and I am so proud to have his work on my skin. I will definitely be going back to Scott for more tattoos!!

"Into The Fray" Some of you may know me as Keri B's hubby, otherwise known as her Plus 1. Many of you who do know me in the Yelp community have asked me "so Keri B's hubby, when are you going to write a review?" I realize that some of the community do know my real name, but I use the Keri B's hubby moniker to illustrate that until I have a few reviews under my belt why should anyone know my real name. Why should I sit quietly by, ( actually unquietly, you've seen us party, right. Holler!), while Keri B does all the work, so here I go Into The Fray. Pardon me while I whip this out. So I'm turning 50. Calm down, simmer down now, I know it's shocking. I don't look a day over 49, but I am. Most of you have heard the trials and tribulations of my attempt to become Mr Universe and to take Keri B down with me. She tagged along with me on that adventure kicking and screaming, "Via Con Pollo". No I didn't make any magazine covers, but hey, I look decent in a t-shirt now and no one got hurt, except me, which is usually how my exploits turn out. Which takes me to my latest exploit, wild hair, why in the hell did you do that("cause I'm 50 and I can kiiick") adventure. I got a new tattoo. A new tattoo refers to having more than one. Yes I have one already so getting another throws me into the Fray of all the other multi tattoo wearers. Having one tattoo is cool, sexy, fun. Having more than one, well that takes you to a "whole nuther levah". Its means you've decided to make your skin a canvas for your own expression and feelings, you've nutted up and laughed pain in the face, cuz there is plenty of it. You've conquered some demons and said to hell with it, lets do this thang. For those that went hell bent for leather and got a tattoo on the spur of the moment. I applaud your grit, shoot first ask questions later attitude. Me, I planned it, which takes me to the real meat and taters of this review. The Inkery, 1201 W 6th St. Suite D, Austin, TX. Owner and artist extraordinaire, Scott Spencer. I met Scott a few months ago when my BFF Laura got her tattoo. After talking to Scott and seeing his work I knew this was the artist I wanted to ink my bear. Yes I said bear as in grizzly bear. We went through several designs. Keri B put the kibosh on anything that looked fierce. We finally came up with an image and then we changed it. Scott explained to me how the design should look and how it would appear on my arm so the design he had in mind turned out perfectly and Keri B loved it, Thank god Scott had the foresight to change my design, otherwise my bear design that I wanted would have looked like a rat trying to crap a football. To say Scott is a tattooist is an understatement. To say Scott is an artist that uses the human skin as his canvas would be more accurate. Scott is a true artist and professional at his craft. If you are planning to get some ink on your bodeyy please do yourself a favor and go consult with Scott at The Inkery. I'm damn glad I did. Do I plan on doing something crazy for my B'day like jumping out of a moving airplane while drinking whiskey, uh no. I'm sure there is some kind a law against that. Would I get another tattoo from Scott, Hell Yes and once more into the Fray! Disclaimer: Keri B did not write or help me write this, so if you don't like it blame her. The mentioning of people that are hell bent for leather and shoot first and ask questions later is purely spontaneous. No bears, chickens, rats or other quadrapeedal or bi-peedal aminals were hurt in the writing of this review. Fax mentis incendium gloria cultum," et cetera, et cetera..."Memo bis punitor delicatum!" It's all there, black and white, clear as crystal! Good Day!

I came in to get a new fitted nose ring about a month ago I only needed a new fitted ring. I've had the piercing itself for 10 years now & I've never had an issue with changing jewelry and I've had it at a 18 gauge the full time. The piercer said he grabbed the right size jewelry after sizing . Showed it to me.. I said it looked kinda thick and he said it was standard size. I thought that was weird but trusted him since I told him the gauge size to begin with. Then I asked for help getting old nose ring out and this one in. He proceeded to gauge my nose with out my knowledge and when I pulled back and said "OWCH" he said it just needed lube because it wasn't going in and continue to force it in and was extremely aggressive about it and acted like I was stupid or didn't know what I was talking about when I voiced I've never felt pain like that changing a piercing. My nose bled and was so swollen the next day that I had to go to a different shop to get it taken out because I couldn't even sleep on that side of my face it hurt so bad. The next shop I saw said that he gauged my nose ring to a 16 and ripped it a little from gauging it so roughly.

I wanted to have "him" with me in some way for the rest of my life... enter ZULU. I am a hairdresser, and a wonderful client of mine said to me one day as we were discussing tattoos, "there's nobody on earth I'd let tattoo me other than Zulu". This is HIGH praise coming from this particular woman, so I looked him up. As soon as I went to his website, I felt an energy that I can only describe as "this is it, this is my guy", I knew it immediately. Browsing through his work, I was blown away. His meticulous attention to detail is unmatched. He is an ARTIST of the highest degree. His website images don't do justice to the work- I don't think any picture of his work can do his art justice. You *have* to see it to believe it. I had a consultation with him, and shared with him images of things I liked, and things I'm drawn to, but mostly I wanted him to create it. Several days later, he sent me an image of what he came up with, and it was a slam dunk, just as I knew it would be. It took 3 sessions to complete, and it is a MASTERPIECE. I love the art on my forearm so much it's stupid. I get so much attention because it's so incredible. I even met Prince's band The Revolution, and they were blown away! Wendy and Lisa couldn't stop touching it! Anyway, you get my point, right? So here's another thing... Zulu himself is an amazing human being. He and I had the most wonderful conversations and now he's my friend forever. Choose Zulu as your artist and you'll have more than just a tattoo, you'll have a masterpiece.

Since we visited a…read morefew months ago for him to work on my wife's back, he and I have been in contact about what I've had planned for the remainder of the sleeve on my right arm. Because I travel for 6 months of the year the remainder of our conversations have been via email and also a 30 minute FaceTime consultation while I was overseas in place of a telephone call. Khani (shop mgr/wife) has done a wonderful job throughout of keeping the flow going and making sure that Zulu was available to discuss issues with me as needed. Zulu spent a considerable amount of time prepping for our arrival this trip as I had provided a number of different pieces of Tibetan art work to use for reference on my arm. After the FaceTime consult he fully understood what I wanted and that he was also given full artistic license to do what looked right and would flow with what I already had on my arm. He is only the second artist I've aver talked to that immediately got my concept and was genuinely excited about doing the work I was requesting. This was first obvious to me when we originally visited, but once we had talked and he started the work on the final design, the true light came out in Zulu. I arrived about 15 minutes early to the studio and just sat while he continued to collect his thoughts and worked to get the various pieces setup. We started with a fitting of the largest piece that would be done which was a full incarnation of Mara in demon form. Zulu only needed to resize it once and then worked on the angle and layout on my forearm (which is not big in any way) however, he laid it out to allow for the rest of the piece around and on the back of my arm. Once we had it fully laid out he applied the initial stencil for Mara and then he got to work. Zulu uses a rotary gun to apply his tattoos (as does Pinky which makes for a soothing sound in the small space). The beauty of this style of application is that unlike a normal gun that basically hammers you throughout the process, the rotary is more like a smooth flowing motion. When you add this to the extremely delicate touch that Zulu has while tattooing it makes for the absolute most pleasurable experience I've had to date. There was literally no pain until about the last 10 minutes of the session. We took a total of 4.5 hours to do all of the outline work for my arm, the detail in person looks unlike any I previously thought possible from a tattoo. His classical art training comes out when he works and his chair side manor is beyond reproach. The music in the studio is also spot on allowing Zulu to get into his groove and produce the beginnings of a masterpiece. I say beginnings because I can't wait to come back to finish the color and shading in November. Bottom line: if you want something that is truly a masterpiece on you as the canvas...than Zulu is the person to do it for you. There is no longer a need for me to search out an artist for my other projects, Zulu has a client for life.
