I was really worried about joining A.R.T. for several reasons. Namely, every tattoo shop I went to…read moresaid the avoid anything that called itself a tattoo school, because they're scams and they claim to make you a tattoo artist in two weeks. Those schools exist, but A.R.T. is not one of them. After sitting through shop after shop telling me they just didn't want me on their team (for no reason other than they were afraid of competition, perhaps because I am a woman, I don't know), I decided to say forget those people who are telling me what I can and cannot do. I checked out A.R.T. and it was nothing like what they said. I've been an apprentice for a year now and I'm still learning every day. I agree that it takes time to perfect this challenging skill, and A.R.T. is not claiming otherwise. It is exactly like a regular apprenticeship without the three years of violent hazing, cleaning the shop and artists' houses and cars, picking up their kids from school, being free labor all while never touching a machine. This wonderful, inviting, welcoming institution accepts people of any race, gender, and age as long as they are passionate about their chosen career path. People have told us time and time again that we're not worthy of being tattoo artists because they say so, because we're breaking from their personal opinions on how it should be done. I don't know these people, but I do know that they are not going to stop me achieving my goals and following my dreams.
